Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Three of these sluggers hit 50 home runs in a season more than once. Which player never reached that 50 plateau?

Answer: Duke Snider

The others did it twice in their career. Duke Snider, mostly with the Dodgers, retired with 407 home runs, but never hit more than 43 in a season.
2. Three of these baseball greats won a season MVP at least three times in their career. Which one didn't win any?

Answer: Mark McGwire

The others were all Yankees and won their awards with them. McGwire began his career by winning the AL Rookie of the Year award in 1987, but that was pretty much it. When he hit 70 home runs in 1998 which broke Roger Maris' home run record from 1961, he finished the MVP second to Sammy Sosa of the Cubs, and had only two first place votes compared to Sosa's 30.
3. Which of these strikeout kings did not reach 4000 career strikeouts?

Answer: Tom Seaver

Seaver, who spent most of his career with the Mets, retired with 3640 strikeouts. Tom retired with three Cy Young, and a Rookie of the Year award in 1986. He was a Hall of Fame inductee in 1992.
4. Three of these sluggers popped five or more grand slams in a season. Which player did not?

Answer: Ted Williams

Banks hit five with the Cubs in 1955. Mattingly of the Yankees hit six in 1987. Hafner, in his fifth season, hit six in 2006 for the Indians. Williams' season high was three, which he smacked for the Red Sox in 1955.
5. Which of the following pitchers never won the Triple Crown?

Answer: Whitey Ford

Both Gomez with the Yankees, and Johnson of the Senators, won it more than once. Santana won his with the Twins in 2006. Although Ford of the Yankees led the league three times in wins, and twice in ERA, he never put all three categories together. He did win the Cy Young award in 1961.
6. Of these four pitching greats, three won the Cy Young award at least three times. Which of the following did not win any?

Answer: Nolan Ryan

Retiring after 27 seasons and 5714 career strikeouts, Nolan never won a Cy Young or MVP in his fabulous career. The closest that he came to a MVP was placing 14th in the balloting in 1974. In 1973, he was runner-up to the Cy Young with Baltimore's Jim Palmer spoiling that one.
7. Which of the following never hit .400 in a season?

Answer: Larry Walker

Hornsby hit .400 four times in his great career. Cobb did it three times. Jackson, in his short and banned career, hit over .400 only once. Who knows what might have been? Walker of the Rockies hit a career high .379 in 1999.
8. Legging out that extra base hit makes it easier on the on-deck batter. Three of these players hit 50 doubles in a season at least three times in their career. Which player never reached 50?

Answer: Mark McGwire

Speaker did it five times between the Red Sox and Indians. Musial did it three times, all with the Cardinals. Paul Waner of the Pirates did it three times, and topped out at 62 in 1932. McGwire never hit 30 doubles in a season.
9. Three of these players provided their services with the same franchise throughout their entire career. Which one did not?

Answer: Hank Aaron

The others played for at least 18 seasons with only one team in their career. Aaron, after 21 loyal seasons with the Braves, was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers in 1975, where he spent his final two seasons.
10. Three of these managing greats have won over 2000 games in their career. Which manager did not?

Answer: Tom Lasorda

Lasorda spent all his 21 seasons with the Dodgers. Winning two Manager of the Year awards, he retired with a 1599-1439 record.
