Phelps won gold in the 400m individual medley, 200m butterfly, 200m individual medley, 100m butterfly, 4x100m medley relay, and 4x 200m free relay. He added the bronze for the 200m freestyle and the 4x100m free relay. This gave him a total of 8 individual medals of which 6 were gold. The US team as a whole secured 12 golds (and 28 in total).

The US team secured both golds ,but not without controversy. In the women's, Carly Patterson won with a great performance from Russian Svetlana Khorkina and Chinese Nan Zhang. However, in the men's, things were not so clear cut. American Paul Hamm won the gold but only after a decision by the judges to drop points from the Korean Tae Young Yang, after the original score had been published.

It caused an outrage, and the American was to win the gold in a manner he would not have liked. Young Yang had to settle for bronze whilst his compatriot Eun Dae Kim landed silver.
13. Which two nations won the Hockey golds, women and men?

Answer: Germany & Australia

In the men's event, Australia defeated the Dutch (Holland) whilst in the women's event, Germany also beat the unlucky Dutch. Both finals were hard fought and very closely matched.
14. In Rowing, there were 14 golds won by 11 different nations. Which two nations scooped more than one each?

Answer: Romania & Germany

The Romania women's crews won three of the six medals available for women, whilst the German women won two of the other three. Only New Zealand women landed one. In the men's however, the eight races were won by eight nations, Great Britain, Poland, Russia, Australia, France, Denmark, Norway, and USA.

Answer: Kelly Holmes & Hicham El Guerrouj

Holmes won gold in both the women's 1500m and 800m, whilst El Guerrouj triumphed in the mens 5000m and 1500m. Wariner won the men's 400m, and also the mens 4x400m, but as an individual he only won one event. Campbell won the women's 200m whilst taking the bronze in the 100m. Gatlin won the mens 100m but took bronze in the 200m. Williams-Darling won the 400m for women. Phillips secured the Long Jump title whilst Cumba won the shot put in the women's version.
