Mel played from 1926-1947. He reached the 500-mark in 1945. Six times, Mel led the National League in home runs and retired with 511. He was the third player to become a member of the 500 Home Run Club behind Babe Ruth and Jimmie Foxx. The Hall of Fame inducted him in 1951, seven years before his death.
