Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Initially Sachin wanted to be a fast bowler, but a great International cricketer advised him to give up the idea, which led him to focus on his batting. Who was this famous cricketer?

Answer: Dennis Lillee

During his school days, Sachin attended the MRF pace foundation with the intention of becoming a fast bowler. But, the chief coach of the MRF pace foundation Dennis Lillee advised him against it. Lillee asked Sachin to focus on his batting. And that indeed turned out to be good advice.
2. Who was Tendulkar's coach who contributed a lot to his success?

Answer: Ramakant Achrekar

Sachin Tendulkar studied in the Sharadashram school in Mumbai. His cricketing coach was Ramakant Achrekar whose contribution was very important in the rise of Tendulkar. Reportedly, coach Achrekar was so impressed by Sachin's batting, that he would offer a coin to any bowler who would dismiss Sachin; however if no bowler could get him out, Sachin would get the coin. Sachin reportedly got 13 such coins from his coach.

Ramesh Tendulkar is Sachin's father, Ramesh incidentally named Sachin after the legendary music composer Sachin Dev Burman. Anand Mehta is Sachin's father-in-law, father of his wife Anjali.
3. Sachin came into the limelight when he was involved in a 600 run partnership in a school match. Who was his partner and friend, who also played for India?

Answer: Vinod Kambli

During a school tournament, Sachin and his close friend Vinod Kambli put up a record partnership of 664 in 1988. It was this performance which brought Sachin into the limelight. Vinod Kambli also later played for India, but was not as successful as Sachin. Gambhir and Sehwag are from Delhi and are juniors to Sachin. Sanjay Manjrekar is Sachin's senior from Mumbai and was a close friend of Sachin.

But in later years (2007 onwards), Manjrekar has been a critic of Sachin's performance.
4. At what age did Sachin make his first class debut?

Answer: 15

Sachin Tendulkar made his first class debut playing for Mumbai against Gujarat. On his debut day, he was 15 years and 232 days old. He scored a century on his debut, creating another record. An interesting fact is that Sachin scored a century in his first Ranji trophy, Duleep trophy and Irani trophy (local tournaments in India between various states/zones) matches.
5. Against which team did Sachin make his International debut?

Answer: Pakistan

At the age of 16, Sachin made his International debut against Pakistan when he played the first test in Karachi. The Indian captain for the series was Krishnamachari Srikkanth. He made his one day debut also against Pakistan in the same series. His performance in his debut match was not so special and he was dismissed in both matches by Waqar Younis. But he impressed in a first class match, when he took on the legendary leg spinner Abdul Qadir smashing him for sixes and fours.

Sachin scored his first International century against England in 1990 in the Old Trafford test. He impressed the world with his centuries against Australia in Sydney in Perth in the 1991-92 series.
6. Sachin played in English county cricket in 1992, which team did he represent?

Answer: Yorkshire

Following his impressive entry into International cricket, Sachin was offered a contract to play in English county cricket for Yorkshire. He was the first overseas born player to play for Yorkshire (another of his countless records). He played in 16 matches for Yorkshire and scored 1,070 runs at an average of 47.
7. Sachin Tendulkar has numerous records in his name, the one record he does not have is being the first to score 1000 runs in world cup cricket. True or False.

Answer: True

Sachin Tendulkar has many records in his name, including being the first to score 10000 runs in one day cricket, first to score 75 centuries in International cricket, first to get 50 man of the match awards in one day cricket, first to score 40 hundreds in one day cricket, etc, etc.

In world cup cricket, Sachin has scored more than 1700 runs. But the first to score 1000 runs in world cup was not Sachin, it was Javed Miandad of Pakistan.
8. Sachin Tendulkar scored 140 in 101 balls in a 1999 world cup match against Kenya. What was special about this innings?

Answer: This was the first match he played after his father's death

In the 1999 world cup, Sachin got a shock, when he learnt of the death of his father Ramesh Tendulkar. Sachin left the tournament mid-way to attend the last rites of his father, thereby missing a match. After he came back, he played the first match against Kenya and scored an unbeaten 140. He dedicated this innings to the memory of his late father.
9. A legendary cricketer once saw Sachin batting on television and remarked that Sachin was playing the same way as he used to do. Who was this legendary cricketer?

Answer: Don Bradman

In 1996, during the World cup matches, the legendary Australian batsman Sir Donald Bradman was watching a match on TV. When he saw Sachin batting, he called his wife and said "Jessie, Jessie, come here! Look there, the batsman on television, doesn't he remind you of me?".

The Don always maintained that Sachin batted just like he used to do. On his 90th birthday, Bradman invited Sachin (along with Shane Warne) for a special meeting. Tendulkar has always savoured the memories of his meeting with the Don.
10. Sachin Tendulkar never scored a one day century against Australia in Australia, is this true or false?

Answer: False

Sachin Tendulkar had never scored a century against Australia on Australian soil (though he had scored many centuries at other venues). In the Commonwealth Bank series in March 2008, he scored his first century on Australian soil scoring an unbeaten 117 to help India win the match and the CB series against Australia.
