Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Sourav Ganguly represented Bengal in domestic cricket. He was part of the side that won Ranji trophy in the 1989-90 season. How many runs did he score that season?

Answer: 22 runs

Though Sourav Ganguly was part of the brigade that won the Ranji Trophy in 1989-90, he played just one match, the final. He replaced his elder brother Snehasish Ganguly in the finals. His contribution was 22 runs.
2. Sourav Ganguly made his test debut well after making ODI debut.

Answer: Yes

He made his ODI debut against West Indies in Australia on 11th January 1992. He scored just 3 runs in that match and was dropped immediately because of a lot of on and off-field criticisms such as being stamped as very arrogant.
He had to wait for 4 long years before making his test debut against England in an away series on 20th June 1996. The series turned out to be dominated by this southpaw. Though he played just two tests, he was adjudged the Man of the Series.
3. In the series of 1996, Sourav got his chance in the second test against England at Lord's, thanks to the controversial departure from the touring party of this hard-hitting sardar, citing ill treatment by the then captain Mohammed Azharuddin. He was later a well-known cricket commentator known for his idioms. Who is he?

Answer: Navjot Singh Sidhu

Had Sidhu not departed from that tour, probably 'Dada' would not get to make his debut. Reasons for his clash with Mohammed Azharuddin (who was later tainted with allegations of match-fixing and banned) however remained unknown.
Sidhu became a cricket commentator after retiring from the game, and is famous for his witty idioms, popularly known as 'Sidhuism'.
4. Sourav's debut test happened to be the debut test for another stalwart of Indian cricket. The duo went on to rule Indian cricket for years to come. This test remained historic because of another reason. A very famous and extremely popular cricket umpire officiated for the last time in this test. Name them.

Answer: Rahul Dravid and Dickie Bird

Rahul missed out a century by just 4 runs in his debut test. Harold Dennis Bird, better known as 'Dickie' Bird, officiated for the last time in this test, which happened to be his 66th. He was highly admired and respected by the players and was very popular as well.
5. In the 1999 World Cup cricket, Sourav played a breath-taking knock against Sri Lanka to score a massive 183 off just 158 balls. India went on to beat Sri Lanka by 157 runs in this match. Where was this match played?

Answer: County Ground, Taunton, England

This was the second highest individual score by an Indian in ODI. Mahendra Singh Dhoni equalled it in 2005 against Sri Lanka (what a co-incidence) at Jaipur. A few matches of the 1999 World cup, which was primarily hosted by England was played in Ireland, Wales, Scotland, and the Netherlands. It was in an effort to promote the game in these countries.
6. Sourav Ganguly became the captain of an Indian cricket team after Azharuddin was tainted with match-fixing scandals. In which year was this?

Answer: 2000

This was a period of great turm-oil for Indian cricket. Ganguly proved to be one of the greatest Indian captains of all-time. Under his leadership, India won the Natwest Trophy in 2002, and reached the World Cup final in 2003. Unfortunately, they were beaten comprehensively in the finals by Australia.
7. Regarding batting on the off-side, which of his teammates once said Sourav Ganguly was next to God?

Answer: Rahul Dravid

There had been a lot of criticism about how Sourav Ganguly dealt with bouncers, but his elegance and grace on the off-side is beyond question.
8. Sourav was a very aggressive captain and had to pay dearly at times. Probably, he is the captain to suffer the wrath of match referrees the most. The most severe was the 6-match ban handed down by ICC match referree Clive Lloyd in 2005. Why was he punished?

Answer: Slow over rate

This ban paved the way for Rahul Dravid to replace 'Dada' as captain against Sri Lanka. Though the ban was reduced later to 4 matches by Justice Albey Sachs, 'Dada' joined the team as a player and not captain. Though he never got into controversy for ball tampering, he did make Steve Waugh wait by coming late for toss.
9. 'Dada' created an uproar by his act after the famous Natwest Trophy win at Lord's in 2002. After a stunning performance by Yuvraj Singh and Mohammad Kaif chasing 326, what did he do to stun the Puritans of English cricket?

Answer: Took off his shirt in public and waved it in air

His taking off his shirt marked India's celebration in a tightly fought match with nail-biting finish. He later on defended his act by saying he was just mimicking what Andrew Flintoff did during their tour of India.
10. Sourav Ganguly was the 'icon player' and captain of this team from Kolkata in the Indian premier League. The team was owned by Shahrukh Khan, one of the biggest names from Bollywood. What is the name of this team which sees such celebrities as Juhi Chawla and Arjun Rampal as its staunch supporters?

Answer: Knight Riders

Knight Riders have a gorgeous golden helmet as their symbol. 'Korbo, lorbo, jitbo re' (We will do,fight and win) is their theme song. Rajasthan Royals hails from Jaipur and won the inaugural IPL under the captaincy of Shane Warne. Another celebrity actor Preity Zinta owned the King's Eleven Punjab, the team from Chandigarh. Chennai Super Kings lost to Rajasthan Royals at the finals.
