Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Tom Watson won his 3rd Open Championship in 1980 by four shots over Lee Trevino. Which course hosted that year's tournament?

Answer: Muirfield

Trevino was the early leader, but Watson took charge with a 64 in the 3rd round, and comfortably held on in the final round to claim his 3rd claret jug.
2. In 1981, Royal St. George's Golf Club at Sandwich was the venue for the Open for the first time since 1949. Which American won his first major there in 1981?

Answer: Bill Rogers

Rogers took a five shot lead into the final round, and held off a late challenge from Bernhard Langer to win his first and only major.
3. In 1982, at Royal Troon, Tom Watson won his 4th Open Championship by a single stroke from which two players?

Answer: Peter Oosterhuis and Nick Price

The headlines on the first two days were made by Bobby Clampett, who led by seven shots after round two. His challenge fell away on day three, and Watson won in a blanket finish, just four shots separating the top ten finishers.
4. Tom Watson successfully defended his title at Royal Birkdale in 1983. Which American player would have tied him and forced a playoff if it hadn't been for a "fresh air" shot on the 14th green during the 3rd round?

Answer: Hale Irwin

Stadler led at the halfway stage, but Watson moved into a single shot lead after round three, and held on for a one-shot victory over Irwin and Bean. Watson became the first player since Peter Thomson in 1965 to lift the famous claret jug for a fifth time.
5. In 1984, at St Andrews, Tom Watson was attempting to equal Harry Vardon's record of six Open Championships, and at the same time become the first player since Peter Thomson in 1956 to win three years in succession. He came within a couple of holes of doing just that, but which European holed out for a birdie on the 72nd hole to deny the American?

Answer: Seve Ballesteros

In one of the most thrilling finishes ever seen in an Open Championship, Watson and Ballesteros were tied for the lead with Watson on the 71st tee and Ballesteros on the 72nd. Watson's approach shot at the 17th sailed through the green and ended up on the grass verge over the road behind the green. Ballesteros holed out for a birdie on the 18th, and, with the roars of the galleries reverberating around the Old Course, Watson failed to save par at the 17th, leaving him needing to hole his second from the 18th fairway to force a tie, which, not surprisingly, he failed to do.
6. In 1985 at Sandwich, which player ended the 16-year wait for a "home " winner with a one-stroke victory over Payne Stewart?

Answer: Sandy Lyle

No British player had won the Open since Tony Jacklin in 1969, but Lyle ended the drought with the narrowest of wins over Stewart.
7. Which Australian won his first major at Turnberry in 1986?

Answer: Greg Norman

Unlike the 1977 Open at Turnberry which was played in heatwave conditions, the 1986 tournament was plagued by wind and rain, and Norman mastered the conditions better than anyone to win by five shots from Gordon J Brand.
8. Nick Faldo won his first Open at Muirfield in 1987 by one stroke from Australian Rodger Davis and which American player?

Answer: Paul Azinger

The weather at Muirfield in 1987 was even worse than the previous year at Turnberry. Faldo made 18 consecutive pars on the final day to win his first claret jug. Azinger would gain some revenge in 2008 when he captained the USA Ryder Cup team to victory over Faldo's Europeans.
9. Bad weather affected the Open for a 3rd consecutive year at Lytham in 1988, with the tournament not finishing until the Monday. Which player finished two shots ahead of Nick Price to lift the trophy?

Answer: Seve Ballesteros

Ballesteros had triumphed on the previous occasion the Open was held at Lytham in 1979, and he repeated his success after the tournament was held over for an extra day due to heavy rain which washed out play on the Saturday.
10. In 1989, the Open Championship was held at Royal Troon, and resulted in the first four-hole play-off in Open history. Which American won that playoff to secure his first major?

Answer: Mark Calcavecchia

Calcavecchia defeated Greg Norman and Wayne Grady in the playoff after the three had finished regulation tied on 13 under par.
