Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Former New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts head coach Jim Mora got his first head coaching job in the USFL where he compiled a coaching record of 48-13-1, and was considered by far the best coach in this league's short history. What team did Mora coach in the USFL?

Answer: Philadelphia/Baltimore Stars

Coach Mora led the Stars to all 3 championship games in the league's history, winning 2 and missing out on a clean sweep by 2 points.
2. The USFL was able to lure 3 consecutive Heisman Trophy winners to their league with the New Jersey Generals getting Herschel Walker in 1983, and Doug Flutie in 1985. But they missed out on 1984 winner Mike Rozier. What team landed Rozier into their backfield?

Answer: Pittsburgh Maulers

Mike Rozier had a so-so rookie season with the Maulers in 1984. He went to the Jacksonville Bulls for the 1985 season, and had greater success before going to the Houston Oilers after the USFL closed up shop.
3. Arena Football League fans know the name Mike Hohensee very well as the first QB to throw a touchdown pass in the AFL as a member of the Pittsburgh Gladiators, and more recently as the head coach of the Chicago Rush. But before Hohensee's success in the AFL, he QB'd for the worst franchise in USFL history. Who did Hohensee call the signals for?

Answer: Washington Federals

Hohensee led the sad sack Federals to a combined 7-29 record in 2 seasons. Needless to say, he's had better success in the Arena Football League coaching the Rush to the Arena Bowl XX championship.
4. In the short history of the USFL, it had a few different rules than the NFL. One of these new rules was adopted by the NFL shortly after the USFL folded. What was this rule?

Answer: The use of instant replay

The NFL began using the instant replay starting in the 1986 season, although the NFL version was at the discretion of the replay official. It wasn't until 1999 that the NFL adopted the "red flag" challenge. The NFL did institute both the 2-point conversion and the salary cap starting with the 1994 season. Only college football stops the clock after a first down.
5. There have been several former USFL players that went onto play in the NFL, but 2 former players, Ron Simmons and Larry Pfohl(Lex Luger), went on to successful professional wrestling careers with each holding the WCW World Heavyweight Championship. Both Simmons and Luger were teammates on what USFL team?

Answer: Tampa Bay Bandits

Simmons and Pfohl played together on the 1984 Bandits. After football, both would find success in both WCW and the WWF (later the WWE).
6. Steve Young made his professional debut in the USFL in 1984. Young also signed an unusual 10 year contract that paid him in an annuity per year for 40 years. What team signed Young to this most unusual contract?

Answer: Los Angeles Express

Young signed with the Express in 1984, but missed the first 6 games while completing his education. His annuity payout was a favor to the team until the league got rolling. Unfortunately that didn't happen and Young left for the NFL and greener pastures. However, Young is still getting paid his annuity payments per year.
7. Steve Spurrier became a college coaching legend while coaching Florida to a National Championship. But, like so many coaches, Spurrier got his first head coaching job in the USFL and compiled a 35-21 record over 3 seasons. What team did Spurrier coach?

Answer: Tampa Bay Bandits

Spurrier led the Bandits to 3 winning seasons, making the playoffs twice but not able to win in the postseason. After the USFL, Spurrier went on to coach at Duke, Florida, Washington Redskins, and later the head coach at South Carolina.
8. The USFL began play in 1983 with 12 teams. Of these 12 original teams, all made the playoffs during the league's 3 year run except 2. One team was the hapless Washington Federals who managed 7 wins in 2 seasons. Who was the other original team who failed to make the playoffs?

Answer: Boston/New Orleans/Portland Breakers

The Boston/New Orleans/Portland Breakers failed to make the playoffs in any of the 3 seasons. The closest they came was in the first year while playing in Boston when the Breakers went 11-7, but were edged out as a wild card by the 12-6 Chicago Blitz. The Breakers failed to gain a winning record in the final 2 seasons.
9. Of all the cities in which the USFL put up a franchise, one was considered by many to be a factor in obtaining a future NFL franchise. What city was this?

Answer: Jacksonville

The fan and community support was so overwhelming, it nearly lured the Houston Oilers in the late 80's, but the city was awarded an NFL expansion franchise in 1995. Had the Bulls not gotten the kind of community support it got, chances are the Jaguars franchise might never have been. Memphis did host the Titans for a couple of seasons but the franchise has since settled in Nashville. Baltimore and Phoenix would go on to woo existing NFL franchises with the Cardinals heading west to Phoenix in 1988, and the Browns headed east to Baltimore in 1996.
10. For the 1985 season, the Jacksonville Bulls had 2 Heisman Trophy running backs. Mike Rozier joined the Bulls after the Pittsburgh Maulers folded. Who was the other?

Answer: Archie Griffin

Archie Griffin was the first player to win the Heisman Trophy twice winning it in 1974 and '75.
