Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. First played in 1959, the Liberty Bowl in Memphis boasted AXA Financial as its first title sponsor from 1997 to 2003. In 2004, which automotive parts and accessories store chain became the game's second title sponsor?

Answer: AutoZone

The Liberty Bowl actually started life in Philadelphia, with its first four games being played at John F. Kennedy Stadium there. It was the only cold-weather bowl at the time, which affected attendance. The 1964 game between Utah and West Virginia was played at the Historic Atlantic City Convention Center, making it the first bowl game ever played indoors. Since 1965, the game has been played in Memphis.

Title sponsor AutoZone was originally known as Auto Shack, when it opened its first store in 1979. The chain changed it name in 1988 and had over 4,000 stores across the United States when Georgia faced Central Florida on New Year's Eve, 2010.
2. First played in 1935, the Orange Bowl first gained a title sponsor in 1989. Which package-delivery company provided that sponsorship until 2010?

Answer: FedEx

One of the five college bowls games involved in the Bowl Championship Series, the Orange Bowl's first installment was a disaster for the Miami Hurricanes. They generated only four first downs and 28 yards of offense against the Bucknell Bison, who scored their sixth shutout win of the season, 26-0, in front of the home faithful. Typically played on or near New Year's Day, the Orange Bowl has had its share of exciting moments, including the legendary game in 1984 in which the Hurricanes defeated Nebraska for their first national football championship.

FedEx started life as Federal Express in Little Rock, Arkansas, in 1971. The company moved to Memphis in 1973 and became a leader in overnight parcel delivery. FedEx stepped aside as the Orange Bowl's sponsor after the 2010 game. Discover Financial Services, which owns the Discover Card, became the game's second title sponsor starting with the 2011 game.
3. Celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2009, the Sun Bowl has enjoyed sponsorship from several companies during its run. Which banking institution served as the bowl's sponsor from 1999 to 2003?

Answer: Wells Fargo

One of three bowl games to celebrate its 75th anniversary in 2009 - along with the Orange Bowl and the Sugar Bowl - the Sun Bowl was played on New Year's Day from 1935 to 1958. Since 1958, it has been played between Christmas Day and New Year's Day, most often being played on New Year's Eve. The CBS television network began a long-standing broadcast relationship with the game in 1968. At the time of the 2010 game between Notre Dame and Miami (Florida), it was the longest such broadcasting relationship among the college bowl games.

Boston-based John Hancock Financial served as the Sun Bowl's first sponsor from 1986 to 1993. The game was actually known as the John Hancock Bowl from 1989 to 1993. After two years without a title sponsor, the game picked up Minneapolis-based Norwest, a banking and financial-services institution, as sponsor from 1996 to 1998. San Francisco-based Wells Fargo, which acquired Norwest in 1998, served as the game's sponsor from 1999 to 2003. Helen of Troy Limited, which has its U.S. operations in El Paso, sponsored the game through its Vitalis and Brut brands from 2003 to 2009. Automobile manufacturer Hyundai became the fourth company to sponsor the game in 2010.
4. Also celebrating its 75th anniversary in 2009, the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans was title-sponsored by which cellular phone company from 1995 to 2006?

Answer: Nokia

New Orleans sports editor Fred Digby is credited with giving the Sugar Bowl his name, when he and newspaper publisher James Thomson began a campaign in 1927 to get a post-season bowl game started in the city. The game was played at Tulane Stadium, which was also a venue for early Super Bowls, from 1935 to 1975, before being moved to the Louisiana Superdome in 1976. The first time the game was played outside New Orleans was in 2006, after Hurricane Katrina devastated the city. That year, the Georgia Dome in Atlanta served as the game's host.

Nokia was the second title sponsor of the Sugar Bowl. The cellular phone manufacturer took over the sponsorship from the now-defunct USF&G Financial Services, which sponsored the game from 1987 to 1995. Insurance company Allstate became title sponsor in 2007, and was the title sponsor for the 2011 contest between Arkansas and Ohio State. The Sugar Bowl has also been part of the Bowl Championship Series.
5. One of the oldest of the college football bowls, the Cotton Bowl Classic in Texas got its first title sponsor in 1989. Which oil company put its name on the game then, and kept it there until 1995?

Answer: Mobil

Texas Christian University won the first Cotton Bowl 16-6 over Marquette in 1937. The late U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Byron "Whizzer" White was Colorado's MVP in the 1938 game, which the Buffaloes lost to Rice. Future Southeastern Conference foes Arkansas and LSU wound up playing to a scoreless tie in the 1947 game, known in Cotton Bowl lore as the Ice Bowl. And Heisman Trophy winners Tim Brown, Ernie Davis, Doug Flutie and Bo Jackson all made appearances in the game over the years. In 2010, the Cotton Bowl moved from its longtime home at Cotton Bowl Stadium in Dallas to Cowboys Stadium in the suburb of Arlington.

Mobil's roots can be traced back to the Standard Oil Company of New York, which was formed following the breakup of Standard Oil. It officially adopted the Mobil name in 1963, which was shortened from its Mobiloil and Mobilgas brands. Mobil was the Cotton Bowl's title sponsor from 1989 to 1995.
6. A staple on the post-season bowl schedule since 1968, the Peach Bowl in Atlanta picked up a title sponsor in 1998 and was renamed for the sponsor in 2005. Which fast-food establishment put its name on this bowl?

Answer: Chick-fil-A

The first three Peach Bowls were played at Grant Field on the campus of Georgia Tech, in the shadows of the skyscrapers of downtown Atlanta. From 1971 to 1991, Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium served as the game site. The game moved to the Georgia Dome - itself part of a complex that includes CNN Center, Philips Arena, and the Georgia World Congress Center - in 1992. Teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference and the Southeastern Conference have frequently appeared in the game, though teams from other conferences, such as Arizona State, Baylor, East Carolina and Purdue, have also appeared over the years.

Atlanta-based Chick-fil-A has been known over the years for its selection of chicken sandwiches, highlighted by advertising that has cows encouraging people to "eat mor chikin". The chain began operation in 1946, and is unusual in the industry because its stores are closed on Sundays. Chick-fil-A founder S. Truett Cathy also serves as a footnote to automotive history - he was the recipient of the last original Ford Taurus to come off of the Ford assembly line in Atlanta, which was fitting since one of his Dwarf House restaurants was a popular eatery for Ford workers for many years. Chick-fil-A took on title sponsorship of the Peach Bowl in 1998. Beginning in 2006, the game dropped the reference to "Peach" altogether and became the Chick-fil-A Bowl.
7. First played in 1971, the Fiesta Bowl has seen a number of memorable games over the years. Which computer company held title sponsorship of the game from 1993 to 1995?

Answer: IBM

One of the five bowls that is part of the Bowl Championship Series, the Fiesta Bowl was played at Sun Devil Stadium, the home field of the Arizona State Sun Devils, in Tempe from 1971 to 2006. Beginning with the 2007 game, the venue was University of Phoenix Stadium in another Phoenix suburb, Glendale. Although the Fiesta Bowl was originally created to give the champion of the Western Athletic Conference a post-season bowl to play in, it ultimately evolved into a game that could host a national championship showdown because it was for a while unencumbered by conference tie-ins. The 1987 game featuring Miami (Florida) and Penn State and the 1989 game between Notre Dame and West Virginia settled the mythical national championship.

Originally founded as the Tabulating Machine Company in 1896, and incorporated as Computing Tabulating Recording Corporation in 1911, International Business Machines (or IBM) gained its name in 1924 from the Corporation's Canadian and South American subsidiary. IBM was a leader in personal computers and developed processors for use in video game consoles like the Nintendo Wii. IBM was the second title sponsor of the Fiesta Bowl, taking over from Sunkist, an orange-growing cooperative known for its fruit, candy, juice and soft drink products, which sponsored the game from 1986 to 1992. In 1996, snack-chip maker Frito-Lay took over sponsorship through its Tostitos brand.
8. Making its debut in 1978, the Holiday Bowl in San Diego featured which of the following insurance companies as its title sponsor from 2002 to 2009?

Answer: Pacific Life

Brigham Young University played in the first seven Holiday Bowl games, as the champion of the Western Athletic Conference, compiling a 4-3 record. In 1984, an undefeated and top-ranked BYU squad, locked in to playing in the game, defeated Michigan and as such claimed the national title in a bowl game not considered to be in the top tier of the post-season bowls. In 2010, Qualcomm Stadium (also known during its time as Jack Murphy Stadium) hosted its 33rd Holiday Bowl contest, featuring Nebraska and Washington.

Pacific Life Insurance Company was the fifth title sponsor of the Holiday Bowl, and was the longest-serving of the first five sponsors, staying with the bowl from 2002 to 2009. Other sponsors include SeaWorld (1986-90), Thrifty Car Rental (1991-94), Plymouth (1995-97) and Culligan, a water purification company (1998-2001). Pacific Life was founded as Pacific Mutual Life in 1868 by former California governor Leland Stanford in Sacramento. The company moved its headquarters to Newport Beach in Orange County, California, in 1972, and gained its new name in 1997.
9. First played in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1946, the Gator Bowl enjoyed title sponsorship from which automobile manufacturer from 1996 to 2006?

Answer: Toyota

Future ACC foes South Carolina and Wake Forest squared off in the first Gator Bowl in 1946, with the Demon Deacons getting the better of the Gamecocks 26-14. The Gator Bowl was also the scene of one of the most infamous moments in college football history. Ohio State's mercurial head coach, Woody Hayes, punched Clemson nose tackle Charlie Bauman with a forearm when he ran out of bounds, after Bauman intercepted a pass from Art Schlichter. The interception ensured the Tigers a 17-15 victory over the Buckeyes, and Hayes's punch marked the end of his Hall of Fame coaching career.

With the exception of the 1994 Gator Bowl, which was played at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium on the campus of the University of Florida in Gainesville, the Gator Bowl has been played in Jacksonville since its inception. Toyota was the second car maker to sponsor the game - Mazda, the game's first title sponsor, served from 1986 to 1991. The 2011 game between Mississippi State and Michigan was played at EverBank Field, which has been known as Gator Bowl Stadium, Jacksonville Municipal Stadium and Alltel Stadium during its lifetime, and sponsored by Progressive Insurance, which had taken over the sponsorship from Konica Minolta.
10. The oldest of all the American college football bowl games, the Rose Bowl Game first featured corporate sponsorship in 1999. Which well known organization had the honor of providing that sponsorship?

Answer: AT&T

The first Rose Bowl Game, in 1902, was almost the last Rose Bowl Game. Organizers were embarrassed when Stanford, being crushed by Michigan 49-0, forfeited the game with eight minutes left. The game has been played continuously since 1916, with one notable exception, in Pasadena, California. That exception happened in 1942, just weeks after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, when Oregon State faced Duke at what is now Wallace Wade Stadium in Durham, North Carolina. Although best known for its tie-in to the Pac-10 and Big Ten conferences, schools like Alabama, Georgia Tech, Pittsburgh and Tennessee have also appeared in the game over the years.

Prior to its acquisition by SBC Communications, AT&T was title sponsor of the Rose Bowl Game from 1999 to 2002. Unlike many other bowls, the title sponsor of the Rose Bowl Game has been traditionally listed as the game's presenter (ie, The Rose Bowl Game presented by AT&T). Sony, using the PlayStation 2 brand, presented the game in 2003. Citigroup, branded as Citi, presented the game from 2004 to 2010. When TCU faced Wisconsin in 2011, the game was on its fourth title sponsor, electronics producer Vizio.
