Answer: Byron Nelson

Byron Nelson approached Tom after some early failures, and the two forged a strong friendship. Nelson is most famous for once having won 11 tournaments in a row!

Tom won his first Open Championship in 1975 at Carnoustie, the course where Jean Van de Velde later crumbled.

Edwards was diagnosed with ALS in January 2003 and died in April 2004, on the first day of that year's Masters. Watson co-founded a charity with Edwards and Jeff Julian, another golfer diagnosed with ALS, called Driving4Life to raise funds for ALS research.
