Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A total of 76 teams participated in the UEFA Champions League from 52 UEFA membership associations. How many of these 76 teams had to play in the qualifying rounds.

Answer: 54

The teams which automatically qualified for the group stage of the Champions League were comprised of the following:

The reigning title holders
The league champions from the associations ranked 1-12 in the UEFA rankings
The league runners-up from the associations ranked 1-6 in the UEFA rankings
The third-placed teams in the league from the associations ranked 1-3 in the UEFA rankings.
2. How many teams made their debut in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League?

Answer: 3

The teams in question were: Montpellier (France), Malaga (Spain), FC Nordsjaelland (Denmark). Of these, only Malaga qualified for the knockout stages, winning group C ahead of AC Milan (Italy), Zenit St Petersburg (Russia) and Anderlecht (Belgium). Malaga managed to reach the quarter-final, where they were eliminated by Borussia Dortmund (Germany).

Both Montpellier and Nordsjaelland finished bottom of their respected groups, with the Danish side suffering heavy 5-2 and 6-1 losses to Shakhtar Donetsk (Ukraine) and Chelsea (England) respectively.
3. Arguably the "group of death" was Group D. Which team topped the group with 4 wins and 2 draws?

Answer: Borussia Dortmund

Group D contained three previous winners of the competition in Ajax (1995), Borussia Dortmund (1997) and Real Madrid (1998, 2000 and 2002). The other side in the group, Manchester City, had qualified for the tournament as champions of England.

Madrid were arguably favourites to top the group, but instead it was Germany's Borussia Dortmund who finished in top spot, winning four games and drawing two, away to Real Madrid and Manchester City. City were perhaps the most disappointing in the group, finishing bottom and failing to win any games.
4. The joint biggest winning margin in the group stage occurred in the fourth round of home-and-away matches, when Bayern Munich defeated Lille 6-1. Which player scored a hat-trick for Bayern?

Answer: Claudio Pizarro

All four of the players listed scored in Bayern's victory, but it was Pizarro who scored a first half hat-trick as Bayern led 5-0 at half-time. Salomon Kalou scored the consolation goal for the French side.
5. Which English club, who had won the UEFA Champions League in 2012, became the first reigning champions to be eliminated at the group stage?

Answer: Chelsea

Despite finishing on equal points with Shakhtar Donetsk of Ukraine, and with a superior goal difference (16-10 vs. 12-8), it was Shakhtar who progressed to the last 16 thanks to having scored more goals away from home in their head-to-head matches (Shaktrar defeated Chelsea 2-1 in Ukraine, with Chelsea winning the return fixture 3-2).

In consolation, by finishing third in the group, Chelsea qualified for the knockout stage of the UEFA Europa League, which they went on to win, defeating Benfica in the final.
6. One of the stand out ties in the last 16 of the 2012-13 UEFA Champions League saw Manchester United take on Real Madrid. Which United player was controversially sent off in the second leg at Old Trafford?

Answer: Nani

The first leg of the tie had finished 1-1 in Madrid. United went ahead early in the second half of the return leg thanks to a Sergio Ramos own goal, and looked to be control of the game, when Nani went into a high challenge with Real's Arvalo Arbeloa.

Despite Nani's eyes appearing to be focussed entirely on the ball, Turkish referee Cuneyt Cakir adjudged the challenge to be dangerous and issued a straight red card. Madrid took full advantage of their extra man and won the game 2-1, to progress 3-2 on aggregate. Real's manager, Jose Mourinho, admitted after the game that he believed the best team had lost.
7. In the quarter-final stage of the 2012-13 UEFA Champions League, Galatasaray defeated Real Madrid 3-2 in the second leg in Istanbul. Of the four players who scored goals in that match, which is the only one NOT to have previously featured in a Champions League final with a club from England?

Answer: Wesley Sneijder

Wesley Sneijder won the Champions League with Inter Milan of Italy in 2010. He scored Galatasaray's second. Cristiano Ronaldo opened the scoring for Real. He had previously played in the 2008 and 2009 finals with Manchester United, winning in 2008. Emmanuel Eboue equalised for Galatasaray in the second half. He had featured in the 2006 final for Arsenal, who lost 2-1 to Barcelona. Didier Drogba scored Galatasaray's third. Drogba scored for Chelsea in the 2012 final against Bayern Munich in normal time, and then converted the winning penalty as Chelsea won 4-3 on penalties.

Although Galatasaray won the second leg, they had already lost the first leg 3-0 in Madrid, and were eliminated 5-3 on aggregate.
8. Which team was the only one that failed to score in the 2012-13 UEFA Champions League semi-final stage?

Answer: Barcelona

Barcelona had won the UEFA Champions League in 2009 and 2011, and had reached at least the semi-final stage since 2007-08. They faced Bayern Munich, who had lost in the 2010 and 2012 finals. Bayern dominated the tie, winning 4-0 in the first leg in Munich, and 3-0 in the return leg in Barcelona.

In the other semi-final, Borussia Dortmund defeated Real Madrid 4-1 in the first leg in Dortmund, and lost 2-0 in Madrid, winning the tie 4-3 on aggregate.
9. The final of the 2012-13 UEFA Champions League saw two German teams meet in the final for the first time. Which of the other so-called "big five" European leagues had NOT already achieved this feat?

Answer: France

Real Madrid and Valencia from Spain were first to achieve this feat in 2000. Italy's AC Milan and Juventus were next in 2003. Manchester United and Chelsea from England met in the 2008 final.
10. Bayern Munich manager Jupp Heynckes picked up his second UEFA Champions League win in 2013. Which team did he lead to victory in 1998?

Answer: Real Madrid

Real Madrid defeated Juventus 1-0 in the UEFA Champions League final. Juventus won the competition in 1996, Dortmund won in 1997 and Manchester United won in 1999. Heynckes had also led Bayern to the final of the Champions League in 2012, but they lost to Chelsea on penalties.

Heynckes left Bayern following their win in the 2013 final, and did not manage another team until he returned to the German club for the 2017-18 season. He subsequently retired after that one season.
