This change had been agreed at the UEFA Executive Committee in May 2013, and was agreed until at least the 2017-18 season. Sevilla, winners of the Europa League in 2006, 2007 and 2014, won the competition again in 2015 and thus became the first team to qualify for the UEFA Champions League by winning the Europa League.

They went on to finish third in Group D behind Manchester City and Juventus, and qualified for the knockout stages of the Europa League as a result. They then went on to win the Europa League again, becoming the first team in the history of the competition to win the Europea League/UEFA Cup three years in a row.

Astana became the first team from Kazakhstan to reach the group stage of the Champions League. They were drawn into a difficult group against Atletico Madrid, Benfica and Galatasaray. Despite finishing bottom of the group, they lost only two games, away to Atletico and Benfica, and drew four.

The other debutants in the group stages were Gent of Belgium, who fared much better. They finished second in Group H, behind Zenit St Petersburg and ahead of Valencia and Lyon. However, they were eliminated by German side Wolfsburg in the round of 16.

Two from Benzema and one from Ronaldo put Madrid 3-0 up at half-time. Ronaldo then netted another three, then Mateo Kovacic scored before Benzema completed his hat-trick.

All four teams finished bottom of their respective groups, but it was Israeli side Maccabi Tel Aviv who lost six games out of six played. To be fair, they were drawn against Chelsea, Porto and Dynamo Kiev, all of whom were previous winners of European trophies, while Maccabi were playing in the group stage for only the second time in their history (their first was in 2004-05).

Real Madrid defeated Wolfsburg 3-2 on aggregate (0-2 away and 3-0 at home), while Bayern Munich defeated Benfica with the same scoreline (2-2 and 1-0). The score was also recorded by Atletico Madrid who defeated Barcelona (1-2 and 2-0), and Manchester City who eliminated Paris Saint-Germain (2-2 and 1-0).

This was Manchester City's first appearance in a semi-final of the Champions League/European Cup. Real Madrid's win saw them progress to their 13th final (they'd won ten of them).

The match finished 1-1 after extra time (1-1 at full time) and Real went on to win 5-3 on penalties. The final was played at the San Siro in Milan, fourth time the stadium had hosted the Champion League European Cup final, the others being 1965, 1970 and 2001.
