Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who won the Women's Singles Championship, in the US Open 2003?

Answer: Justine Henin-Hardenne, Belgium

No.2 seed Justine Henin-Hardenne beat her Belgian compatriot and No.1 seed Kim Clijsters, in a jam packed Arthur Ashe stadium to claim her second Grand Slam title of 2003 (She won also the French Open, also beating Kim Clijsters in the final). With a final score of 7-5, 6-1, Henin-Hardenne put in a gutsy performance that lasted a mere 81 minutes.

This was her first US Open title. No one believed she could win this match, because her semi-final against Jennifer Capriati was three hours long.
2. Who won the Men's Singles Championship, in the US Open 2003?

Answer: Andy Roddick, USA

No.4 seed Andy Roddick cruised to a 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 victory over No.3 seed Juan Carlos Ferrero, to capture the men's singles title at the 2003 US Open. The victory gave the 21-year-old the first Grand Slam title of his career. With the win, Roddick joined Stefan Edberg as the first players to win both the boys' and men's singles titles at Flushing Meadows.
3. Which team won the Women's Doubles Championship, in the US Open 2003?

Answer: Virginia Ruano Pascual / Paola Suarez

The dynamic duo of Virginia Ruano Pascual and Paola Suarez, seeded No.2 in the women's doubles draw, clinched their second consecutive US Open doubles title, defeating veteran Martina Navratilova and Svetlana Kuznetsova, 6-2, 6-3, in 67 minutes. Clijsters and Sugiyama won the doubles title at the French Open and Wimbledon of 2003.

In this tournament, they gave up early in the second round, because of the many rain delays.
4. Which team won the Men's Doubles Championship, in the US Open 2003?

Answer: Jonas Bjorkman / Todd Woodbridge

The experienced team of Jonas Bjorkman and Todd Woodbridge, ensured that there would be no Bryan brothers' belly bump to celebrate a US Open men's doubles championship. Instead, the brothers went belly up in a hotly contested, three-set loss, 5-7, 6-0, 7-5. The No.1 seed team, Bhupathi and Mirnyi, lost to the French team, Llodra and Santoro, in the quarter finals (6-2, 6-2).
5. Which team won the Mixed Doubles Championship, in the US Open 2003?

Answer: Katarina Srebotnik / Bob Bryan

Bob Bryan and teammate Katarina Srebotnik of Slovenia, beat Lina Krasnoroutskaya and Daniel Nestor for the mixed doubles championship, in what became the final match of a memorable 2003 US Open. Score: 5-7, 7-5, 7-6 (10-5 in the tie-break). The No.1 seed team, Suarez and Bhupathi, gave up in the second round.
6. In the women's singles draw, there was an early loss for a player who belonged to the first eight seeded players (kind of an early surprise). Which player was this?

Answer: Chanda Rubin, USA

Rubin (seeded No.8) lost to Vento-Kabchi in the first round with 6-4, 6-4. She was hitting a lot of unforced errors in this match, and in her press conference she said that she couldn't remember ever playing so bad. Myskina (seeded No.7) did well in this tournament (she reached the quarter finals, where she lost to Henin-Hardenne). Maleeva also lost in the first round (to Asagoe of Japan), but she was seeded No.10, so didn't belong to the first eight players.

As for Hantuchova, who was seeded No.9, she lost in the third round to Tanasugarn of Thailand.
7. There was one walkover in the women's singles draw. Which player gave up (without playing)?

Answer: Nathalie Dechy

Nathalie Dechy of France (seeded No.23) gave up in the second round, because of a wrist injury. Her opponent in this round was Amy Frazier (USA), she received a walkover, so she went through the third round without playing. Dechy did play her first round, in which she won against Mattek (USA).
8. Give the names of the unseeded players in the women's singles draw, who reached the fourth round.

Answer: Likhovtseva, Pierce, Safina, Tanasugarn

Elena Likhovtseva (Russia) lost to Paola Suarez (seeded No.24), Mary Pierce (France) lost to Anastasia Myskina (seeded No.7), Dinara Safina (Russia, sister of Marat Safin) lost to Justine Henin-Hardenne (seeded No.2) and Tamarine Tanasugarn (Thailand) lost to Amelie Mauresmo (seeded No.5). Of course, as mentioned in the question, these four unseeded players lost in the fourth round.
9. In the men's singles draw, there were four unseeded players who reached the fourth round. One of these men reached the semi finals in Wimbledon 2002. Which player was this?

Answer: Xavier Malisse

Xavier Malisse of Belgium lost to Andy Roddick in the fourth round (3-6, 4-6, 6-7). In his way to the fourth round, he beat Olivier Rochus (also from Belgium), Calleri (Argentina, seeded No.19) and Tursunov of Russia. That semi-final in Wimbledon 2002, was his best Grand Slam result ever to date.

There he lost to David Nalbandian of Argentina. This man lost to Lleyton Hewitt in the final of Wimbledon 2002.
10. Which young Belgian player had won the Girls' Singles Championship (Juniors), in the US Open 2003?

Answer: Kirsten Flipkens

This young talented girl (aged 17), has also won the junior tournament in Wimbledon 2003. After this US Open, she decided to stop with the junior tennis (she is now also ranked No.1 in the junior rankings). Kirsten will begin with the senior tennis, starting in the smaller tournaments (ITF tournaments of 10.000 dollar).

She is hoping she can reach the top-100 in the WTA ranking, but her coach is more positive: he says she has a good chance of getting into the top-50. She also doesn't want to be compared with Kim Clijsters or Justine Henin-Hardenne, because she will be not as good as these top-2 players (according to her; you can never be sure in tennis).
