Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This Johnson pitcher went 3-4 in his first 11 Major League games as a Montreal Expo before he was traded to the Mariners. He would go on to win five Cy Young awards and throw a Triple Crown. Which Johnson is this?

Answer: Randy

After Montreal, Randy spent 10 seasons in Seattle, then was traded to the Astros in midseason 1998. After going 10-1 with the Astros in the latter portion of 1998, Johnson signed as a free agent with the Diamondbacks. Then after a short stint with the Yankees, Randy was back in Arizona in 2007. Of his five Cy Young awards, only one was with the American League.
2. Before retiring in 1995, this third baseman nicknamed 'HoJo' played for the Tigers before becoming a fixture at the hot corner for the Mets for nine seasons. He led the league in home runs only once, but was a consistent player. Which Johnson was this?

Answer: Howard

Howard's career spanned from 1982-1995. He led the league as a Met in home runs in 1991. He saw two World Series, one with the Tigers and one with the Mets, but his highest batting average in a postseason series was only .056.
3. Which pitching Johnson threw for multiple MVPs and Triple Crowns, and retired with a record-setting 110 career shutouts?

Answer: Walter

Walter was a career Washington Senator. He was nicknamed "The Big Train". His MVPs came in 1913 and 1924. He threw for three Triple Crowns in 1913, 1918, and 1924. He certainly would have been a factor in the 1918 MVP voting if it took place. An easy Hall of Fame inductee, he was taken in the first inductions in 1936 amongst the inaugural five.
4. Which Johnson was the founder and first American League president?

Answer: Ban

With the help of league and team owners including Charles Comiskey, Ban created and formed the new American League. After many seasons and poor dealings, he was forced to resign after the Black Sox Scandal of 1919.
5. This Johnson retired in 2000. He played mostly with the White Sox, but as a Met in 1996, he led the league with 227 hits, 166 of those singles. After a few seasons with the Cubs, he retired as a Yankee. Which Johnson is this?

Answer: Lance

Lance's best was the 1996 season, but still finished 18th in the MVP voting. He appeared in the 1987 Word Series with the Cardinals as a rookie, but was only a one-time pinch-runner. That was his World Series career in a loss to the Twins.
6. Which Johnson was the first African-American Johnson ever inducted into baseball's Hall of Fame?

Answer: Julius

Julius "Judy" Johnson was an early Negro League pioneer and player who helped the cause of the Negro Leagues for recognition. He was once captain of the Pittsburgh Crawfords, one of the greatest teams in the Negro Leagues. Pittsburgh also rostered Cool Papa Bell, Josh Gibson, and Oscar Charleston.

He died short of his 90th birthday in 1989, but did see his Hall of Fame induction in 1975.
7. This eight-season Johnson played with the Cubs, Braves, Angels, Dodgers, and Indians. One highlight in his career was that he knocked in the only run for the Dodgers to help Sandy Koufax throw a perfect game against the Cubs in 1965. Which Johnson is this?

Answer: Lou

On September 9, 1965, Koufax threw his perfecto against the Cubs. Johnson had the only RBI in the game. Lost in the process was the Cubs' Bob Hendley, who threw a one-hitter against those same Dodgers in the game.
8. This all-star Johnson played for 13 seasons with eight different teams. He played exactly 1000 games in the outfield with the Phillies, Cardinals, Reds, Angels, Indians, Rangers, Yankees, and Tigers. He was known as a defensive posture and committed only 84 errors in his career. Which Johnson was this?

Answer: Alex

Johnson's only all-star appearance was with the 1970 Angels. Unfortunately, even moving from team to team, Alex never saw a World Series game. He retired in 1976.
9. Which Johnson was the first pitcher in history to strike out 3000 batters in a career?

Answer: Walter

With 21 seasons as a Washington Senator, Walter retired with 3509 strikeouts in 1927. Johnson won his only World Series title in 1924, the season that he won the MVP and threw a Triple Crown. He died in 1946, 10 years after his Hall of Fame induction.
10. From 1965-1978, this mostly second baseman named Johnson played for the Orioles, Braves, Phillies, and Cubs. The three-time Gold Glove winner wasn't known for his play as much as his managing skills. He managed the Mets to a World Series in 1986. Which Johnson was this?

Answer: Davey

Davey had the helm of the Mets from 1984-1990, before taking over the Reds for three seasons. He also managed the Orioles and Angels. As a player, Johnson had two postseason home runs to his credit.
