Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Three of these players hit at least 50 home runs in a season, and also retired with over 400 home runs. Who did not accomplish either one?

Answer: Larry Walker

The others hit 50+ at least twice, and retired with over 500 home runs. Walker's season high was 49 in 1997, earning him the NL MVP with the
Rockies. He retired with 383 home runs.
2. Three of these speedsters stole at least 100 bases in a season three times. Which one never reached the 100 season plateau?

Answer: Ty Cobb

Nicknamed "The Georgia Peach", Cobb's season high was 96 in 1915 with the Tigers. His next highest season total was 83 in 1911. Hamilton stole over 100 three times, once being in the American Association in 1889, and twice with the Phillies of the National League. Coleman stole 100+ three times with the Cardinals.

Henderson reached the 100-plateau three times with the Oakland Athletics in the 1980s.
3. All these former players went on to manage later in their career, and won at least two Manager of the Year awards. Which of the following never won that award?

Answer: Casey Stengel

The Manager of the Year award began in 1983 with Lasorda of the Dodgers and Tony LaRussa of the White Sox winning the first award. Stengel most likely would have won more than two if the award had been presented in his managing time. Casey took the Yankees to 10 World Series in 12 seasons from 1949-1960, winning seven, and five of those consecutive.
4. You are looking at three pitching greats in baseball, and all three threw three Triple Crowns in their career. Who doesn't belong on this list, and did not even throw one?

Answer: Warren Spahn

Koufax won his three with the Dodgers, Johnson with the Senators, and Alexander with the Phillies and Cubs. 13 seasons saw Spahn win 20+ games and retire with 363 wins. He led the league twice in ERA and wins for the Triple Crown, but fell short in the strikeout department. He was no slouch for strikeouts though, going 17 consecutive seasons with striking out 100+.
5. What a way to start off a career accomplishing big feats, and being recognized with the Rookie of the Year award. Which of the following never won it?

Answer: Ken Griffey Jr

Junior was a rookie in 1989 with the Mariners. He finished third in the rookie voting with only one first place vote. Pitcher Gregg Olsen of the Orioles won the award, and pitcher Tom Gordon of the Royals was the runner-up.
6. Three of these sluggers went to many World Series and hit at least 10 series home runs. They also hit over 350 career home runs. Which of the following didn't do any of this?

Answer: Gaylord Perry

Perry was a pitcher, and was the first to win the Cy Young award in each league. The closest that he came to a World Series was in 1971, his only playoff series. The Pirates defeated his Giants three games to one in the NLCS. Gaylord fell apart in that series, going 1-1 with a 6.14 ERA, allowing 19 hits in 14-2/3 innings, and 10 earned runs.
7. Three of these sluggers won two season home run crowns in their career. Which of the following didn't win any?

Answer: Cal Ripken Jr

Gonzalez won his titles in 1992 and 1993 with the Rangers. DiMaggio won his titles in 1937 and 1948 with the Yankees. Pipp led the AL in 1916 and 1917, hitting 12 and 9, respectively with the Yankees. Although Ripken retired with 431 career blasts, he never led the league. The closest that he came was third in 1991.
8. Which of the following never wore a Cleveland Indian jersey during their entire baseball career?

Answer: Rickey Henderson

After managing the Senators from 1929-1932, Walter took the helm of the Indians for three seasons in the 1930s. He never mustered a better than third place finish. Doby was the first American League African-American player with the Indians in 1947. Boudreau both played for and managed the Indians in the 1940s.
9. Three of these greats won two World Series MVPs in their career. Which one didn't win any?

Answer: Ernie Banks

The World Series MVP award began in 1955 with Johnny Podres of the Dodgers winning the first. Both Koufax of the Dodgers and Gibson of the Cardinals won two in the 1960s, while Jackson's two came in the 1970s. Banks was a career Chicago Cub who retired with 512 home runs. His Cubs never went to a World Series while he was on their roster from 1953-1971.
10. Three of the four listed wore the number 8 on their back in their catching career. Who wasn't a catcher or wore the number 8?

Answer: Jim Fregosi

Fregosi wore the number 11 for 11 seasons with the Angels to start his career. He mostly played shortstop. He played for 18 seasons, retiring in 1978 as a first-season player-manager, then managed until 2000.
