Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Fred Merkle of the New York Giants commits his infamous "boner" by not running to second base on a game-winning play on September 23, 1908. Who was the winning pitcher?

Answer: None of these

The game ended in a tie. The Giants were playing the Cubs, with whom they were locked in a pennant race. In the bottom of the ninth with runners on first and third, the Giants'Al Bridwell hit what appeared to be a game-winning single. As the runner on third jogged towards home, Fred Merkle, the runner on first, apparently (the facts are in dispute) failed to touch second base.

The Cubs recognized this and in a mad scramble, got the ball to second baseman Johnny Evers, who stepped on the bag for a force out. Because the Polo Grounds crowd had stormed the field, the game was ended and declared a tie.

As it happened, the Cubs and Giants ended the season with identical records and were forced into a playoff that the Cubs won. Merkle's "boner" had, in effect, cost the Giants the pennant. Jack Pfiester and Christy Mathewson started for the Cubs and Giants, respectively. Cubs ace Mordecai "Three Finger" Brown did not appear in this game.
2. Which pitcher won the game when Babe Ruth hit his 60th home run of the season on September 30th, 1927, against the Washington Senators?

Answer: Herb Pennock

Herb Pennock relieved George Pipgras in the seventh inning with the score tied and was the beneficiary of Ruth's two-run blast in the eighth. Tom Zachary, who gave up the record-breaking home run, was the losing pitcher. Lefty Grove never pitched for either the Yankees or the Senators.
3. Joe DiMaggio's 56-game hitting streak is ended in Cleveland on July 17, 1941. Who was the victorious pitcher on that day?

Answer: Lefty Gomez

The Yanks won anyway with Lefty Gomez getting credit for the win. Al Smith, who along with Jim Bagby Jr. kept DiMaggio hitless, took the loss for the Indians, while Ken Keltner was the third baseman who robbed DiMaggio twice to help end the streak. Mort Cooper, standout pitcher for the Cards in the early 1940s, never played in the American League.
4. Dick Sisler hit a home run in the 10th inning on the last day of the season to win a pennant for the Phillies in 1950. Which pitcher was smiling on that day?

Answer: Robin Roberts

Robin Roberts, ace of the "Whiz Kids," outlasted Don Newcombe of the Dodgers for the win. Jim Konstanty and Ralph Branca, top relievers for the Phils and Dodgers respectively, did not enter the game as both Roberts and Newcombe went the full 10 innings.
5. Which pitcher was on the mound, and won the game when Eddie Gaedel, all 3'7" of him, came to bat for the St. Louis Browns on August 19, 1951?

Answer: Bob Cain

Bill Veeck's famous stunt did not deter Detroit pitcher Bob Cain from getting on with the business of winning the game. He was relieved by Dizzy Trout in the ninth inning. Duane Pillette was the losing pitcher for the Browns. Allie Reynolds, solid pitcher for the Yankees in this era, played for neither the Tigers nor the Browns.
6. On May 26, 1959, Harvey Haddix pitches 12 perfect innings for the Pirates against the Braves, but loses the game in the 13th inning. Who won this historical game?

Answer: Lew Burdette

Lew Burdette gave up 12 hits but recorded a 13-inning shutout. The first Brave to get on base was Felix Mantilla who led off the bottom of the 13th by reaching on a throwing error by third-baseman Don Hoak. Hank Aaron was intentionally walked and Joe Adcock followed with a home run. Adcock passed Aaron on the bases and was officially given credit for a double, but the game was over. Warren Spahn and Bob Buhl were starting pitchers for the Braves that year, but did not participate in this game. Vernon Law pitched for the Pirates and also did not appear in this game.
7. "Hub Fans Bid Kid Adieu": Which pitcher was victorious and had the honor of seeing Ted Williams' home run in his last at bat on September 28, 1960?

Answer: Mike Fornieles

Reliever Mike Fornieles pitched the last two innings to get the win over the Baltimore Orioles. Williams' home run in the eighth inning was not the deciding blow. The Red Sox scored twice in the ninth to win the game, 5-4. Jack Fisher, who gave up the home run to Williams, was also the losing pitcher. Bill Monbouquette, who led the Sox in wins that year, did not appear in this game, while Early Wynn never played for either the Red Sox or Orioles.
8. Roger Maris broke Babe Ruth's single-season record by hitting his 61st home run on October 1, 1961. Which pitcher won this game?

Answer: Bill Stafford

Bill Stafford pitched six innings of scoreless ball against the Red Sox and received the only run he needed in the fourth inning when Maris hit his record-breaking homer off of Tracy Stallard. Hal Reniff and Luis Arroyo relieved Stafford, preserving the shutout. Frank Lary, who had a career year for the Detroit Tigers in 1961, never played for either the Yankees (he was, in fact, known as the Yankee Killer) or the Red Sox.
9. Hank Aaron broke Babe Ruth's career record by hitting his 715th home run on April 8th, 1974. Who was the winning pitcher in this historical game?

Answer: Ron Reed

Ron Reed pitched six innings, giving up four runs to the Dodgers, but departed with the lead. Al Downing, who gave up the history-making homer was the losing pitcher, while Tom House, who was in the Braves bullpen at that moment, retrieved the ball. Fergie Jenkins never pitched for either the Braves or the Dodgers.
10. Who was the winning pitcher when Bucky Dent broke Boston's heart with a home run in the 1978 American League East playoff game?

Answer: Ron Guidry

Yankee starter Ron Guidry lasted into the seventh inning, long enough to gain the lead on Dent's three-run shot over the Green Monster. Goose Gossage relieved and got the save, retiring Carl Yastrzemski with two on and two out in the bottom of the ninth. Mike Torrez gave up Dent's homer and was tagged with the loss. Phil Niekro pitched for the Yankees late in his career, but not until 1984.
