Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1964, Yankee Mickey Mantle appeared in his last of 12 World Series. He hit three home runs in that series, breaking the series career home run record that belonged to who?

Answer: Babe Ruth

Ruth went to 10 World Series in his career, winning seven. The Babe hit four in the 1926 series loss to the Cardinals. Mantle hit a total of 18 World Series home runs, and the Babe hit 15.
2. In 2004, Ichiro Suzuki of the Mariners had 262 hits in the season, breaking the record of which player, who had the record for over 80 years?

Answer: George Sisler

Sisler set the record as a St. Louis Brown in the American League in 1920 with 257. It would be the first of six times that Sisler would hit 200+ in a season. Lefty O'Doul of the Phillies and Bill Terry of the Giants came close by hitting 254 in 1929 and 1930, respectively.
3. The great Nolan Ryan threw an amazing 383 strikeouts in the 1973 season with the California Angels. Whose modern day season record did he break by only one strikeout?

Answer: Sandy Koufax

Ryan broke Koufax's record with the last batter of his 1973 season. Koufax threw 382 for the Dodgers in 1965. Sandy won the Cy Young award, threw for the Triple Crown, and was the World Series MVP in 1965. He threw 317 strikeouts in his final season in 1966, and retired with elbow issues after only 12 seasons. Koufax was a 1972 hall inductee.
4. In 1986, pitcher Bert Blyleven of the Twins allowed 50 home runs in the season, setting a new Major League record. Whose season record did he break?

Answer: Robin Roberts

The other two never gave up 40 in a season. Blyleven did allow 46 home runs in the following season in 1987, but it was Robin Roberts' 46 that he gave up in 1956 with the Phillies. Robin still went 19-18 in the season. Roberts was the first pitcher to give up 500 home runs in a career, and retired with 505 in 1966.
5. New York Yankee Whitey Ford was a workhorse in the World Series. He retired with 146 innings pitched in the promised land. Whose record did the break, who was also the first pitcher in history to throw 100 World Series innings?

Answer: Christy Mathewson

New York Giant Christy Mathewson went to only four World Series compared to Ford's eleven. He went 3-0 in his only series title in 1905 against the Philadelphia Athletics. Christy had pitched 101 innings with a 5-5 record and retired in 1916. Whitey Ford retired in 1967.
6. Charley Jones won only one home run title in his career, but made it count by setting a new NL season home run record. Whose record did the break?

Answer: George Hall

Jones hit nine in the 1879 season with the Boston Red Caps (later Braves), almost doubling the previous record of George Hall, who hit five in the inaugural season of the National League with the Philadelphia Athletics in 1876. Both tallies were their career highs in the National League.
7. Joe McGinnity had a pretty good season going 28-8, but hit 41 batters also which set a new National League record. Whose record did he break?

Answer: Ed Doheny

McGinnity's great season was in 1901 with the Brooklyn Superbas (later Dodgers). Joe never hit more than 21 batters after that. New York Giant Ed Doheny hit 37 in the 1899 season, and would never hit more than 22 again.
8. When Pete Rose retired in 1986, he had played in the most regular season games than any other with 3562. Whose career record did he break for most games played?

Rose played in 24 seasons. Yastrzemski, a 23-season career Red Sox player, once had the record of 3308 when he retired in 1983.
9. Billy Hatcher of the Reds set a World Series record for batting .750 in a single series in 1990. Whose record did he break?

Answer: Babe Ruth

Ruth hit .625 in the 1928 series along with hitting three home runs. Lou Gehrig also hit .545 along with his four home runs. The Yankees skunked the Cardinals in four games. Hatcher's Reds defeated the Athletics four games to none in 1990. The 1990 series MVP was Jose Rijo for winning two games.
10. Babe Ruth hit 714 career home runs. Along the way in his career, he set a new record for career home runs until he gave it up to Henry Aaron in the 1970s. Whose career home run record did the Babe break?
