Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. From an overall Championships viewpoint, what was special about 1977?

Answer: The Championships were celebrating their centenary

Whilst the first tournament had taken place in 1877, it had been suspended during each of the two World Wars.
2. From a British point of view, why were the championships special?

Answer: Virginia Wade won the Ladies Singles title

Nearing the end of a long and illustrious career, it seemed that Virginia was doomed never to win the title she coveted. However, she arrived at the Centenary Championships with a new look and, more importantly, a new attitude.
3. Who was the runner up in the Ladies competition?

Answer: Betty Stove

Another old campaigner and, like Virginia Wade, this was Betty Stove's first final. The stage appeared set for a major home disappointment when Betty took the first set, only for Virginia to get into her stride and win the next two sets.
4. Who were the other two losing semi-finalists?

Answer: Sue Barker and Chris Evert

Many people forget that Sue Barker was seeded 4 at Wimbledon in 1977. Indeed, it appeared that Sue was the better bet to reach the final given that she was matched against 7th seeded Betty Stove whilst Virginia Wade was pitched against Chris Evert, the reigning champion and number 1 seed.
5. What was significant about the Men's Champion in 1977?

Answer: It was Bjorn Borg's second successive title

Bjorn Borg then went on to take the title for another three years thus giving him a record, for the modern era, of five consecutive wins. This record has only been equalled by Roger Federer.
6. Who was the runner up in the Men's Singles final?

Answer: Jimmy Connors

Jimmy Connors won his first title in 1974, and he would have to wait until 1982 to win his second and last title.
7. What was significant about the runner up in the Ladies final?

Answer: The losing finalist, Betty Stove, also appeared in the Ladies Doubles and the Mixed Doubles final but was beaten in each

A sad record, never before achieved. The British public would never have begrudged Betty at least one title, as long as it was not the Singles.
8. Which seed was the Ladies Champion?

Answer: 3

Equalling the highest seeding that Virginia Wade achieved at Wimbledon.
9. Which seed was the Men's champion?

Answer: 2

Bjorn Borg was only seeded 2 despite being the defending champion. The runner up, Jimmy Connors was the top seed as a result of his consistent form over the course of the previous year.
10. Who was the guest of honour on the Ladies final day?

Answer: Her Majesty the Queen

Tennis was not one of the Queen's favourite sports but there was really no way that she could decline the open invitation in Centenary Year, especially with a British finalist in the Ladies competition.
