Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The 2000 Wimbledon championships saw the first women's singles title for which player?

Answer: Venus Williams

Williams won the first Grand Slam title of her career, defeating defending champion Lindsay Davenport 6-3, 7-6 in the final. Pete Sampras won his seventh men's title, overcoming Pat Rafter in the final in four sets.
2. In 2001, what "first" did Goran Ivanisevic achieve when he lifted the title?

Answer: First wildcard winner

Ivanisevic didn't qualify automatically due to his lowly world ranking, but was awarded a wildcard due to his previous Wimbledon record. The Croatian survived a five-set semi-final against home favourite Tim Henman, then was involved in another marathon in the final.

He eventuallly defeated Pat Rafter 9-7 in the fifth set. In the women's final, Venus Williams defeated Justine Henin in three sets.
3. What happened in the 2002 women's final, that hadn't happened since 1884?

Answer: Two sisters played each other

Venus and Serena Williams became the first sisters to meet in the final since Maud and Lilian Watson did so in the very first women's championship in 1884. Serena won 7-6, 6-3. Lleyton Hewitt won his first men's title, defeating David Nalbandian in the final, 6-1, 6-3, 6-2.
4. In 2003, which player became the first from his country to win the men's singles at Wimbledon?

Answer: Roger Federer (Switzerland)

Federer only dropped one set throughout the tournament, and defeated Mark Philippoussis 7-6, 6-2, 7-6 in the final. Serena Williams recovered from the loss of the first set to defeat Venus Williams in the women's final.
5. In 2004, which Russian player became the first from her country to win the women's singles?

Answer: Maria Sharapova

Sharapova was only seeded 13th for the event, but overcame former champion Lindsay Davenport in the semis, before thrashing Serena Williams 6-1, 6-4 in the final. Roger Federer lost the first set of the men's final to Andy Roddick, before winning the next three.
6. In 2005, which two players contested the longest women's final in the history of the event?

Answer: Venus Williams & Lindsay Davenport

Williams eventually overcame Davenport 4-6, 7-6, 9-7 in 2 hours 45 minutes. In the men's final, Roger Federer defeated Andy Roddick for the second straight year.
7. Which French woman won her first Wimbledon crown in 2006?

Answer: Amelie Mauresmo

Mauresmo lost the first set of the final to Justine Henin, but fought back to win the first Grand Slam title of her career. It was business as usual for Roger Federer in the men's singles, Rafael Nadal being his victim in the final on this occasion.
8. Venus Williams won her fourth title in 2007, but which position was she seeded?

Answer: 23rd

Williams, who had battled against wrist injuries, was ranked 31 in the world at the start of the tournament, and was seeded a lowly 23rd. A straight sets victory over second seed Maria Sharapova in the fourth round opened up the draw for the American, and she would eventually defeat surprise finalist Marion Bartoli 6-4, 6-1 to lift the title. Roger Federer needed five sets to defeat Rafael Nadal in the men's final for the second straight year.
9. In what was the longest men's final ever, which player ended Roger Federer's dominance in 2008?

Answer: Rafael Nadal

Nadal had won his fourth French Open title a few weeks earlier, but the clay court expert proved he could do the business on grass as well, beating Federer 6-4, 6-4, 6-7, 6-7, 9-7 in 4 hours 48 minutes. In the women's final, Venus Williams successfully defended her title, beating sister Serena in straight sets in the final.
10. In 2009, Serena Williams beat her sister Venus in the women's final in straight sets, after having survived a marathon semi-final against which Russian player?

Answer: Elena Dementieva

In what was the longest women's semi final in Wimbledon history, Serena eventually prevailed 6-7, 7-5, 8-6 in 2 hours 49 minutes. In contrast, the final against Venus was a straight sets affair, finishing 7-6, 6-2. Roger Federer made up for his final loss the previous year, by winning the longest final, in terms of games played, in history. He beat Andy Roddick 5-7, 7-6, 7-6, 3-6, 16-14.
