Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first World Championship was played in what year? Between the New York Mets and the Providence Grays, the Grays won all three games.

Answer: 1884

The first series was actually played in 1882, but was called off after two games because of fighting between the two Leagues and doesn't count officially.
2. 1932 -- Chicago Cubs vs. New York Yanks -- Top of the 5th in Game 3, score is tied 4-4. Who "called his shot", a home run to deep center field?

Answer: Babe Ruth

There is some argument about whether or not Babe really called his shot. Cubs pitcher Guy Bush was leading the dugout in name calling and some say the Babe was pointing at the mound warning Bush what would happen when he pitched the next day.
3. 1969 -- Mets vs. Orioles Game 5 -- What was the "Shoe Polish Adventure" all about?

Answer: Proved Cleon Jones had been hit by a pitch

Mets manager Gil Hodges showed the umpire a smudge on the ball, proving that Jones had indeed been hit by a pitch, he advanced to first base, and the Mets went on to win their first World Series.
4. 1956 -- Dodgers vs. Yankees Game 5 -- The first perfect game in Series history was pitched. Who was that pitcher?

Answer: Don Larsen

Larsen threw 97 pitches -- 7 strikeouts, 13 flies, 5 infield grounders, and 2 line drives. Yankees won the Series 4-3.
5. 1977 -- LA Dodgers vs. New York Yankees -- Reggie Jackson set new records for three back-to-back homers, five homers for the series, and three for a single game.

Answer: True

Reggie's 3 homers were back-to-back, hit on the first pitch, and each off of a different Dodger pitcher.
