Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A young Jonathan Archer and his father are making a model (space)ship at the beginning of "Broken Bow: Part 1" while speaking of the impending construction of the Enterprise NX-01. What does Jonathan call the Vulcan Ambassador whose ship he compares it to?

Answer: Ambassador Pointy

Jonathan's father Henry is a warp engineer who is part of the team who is designing the Enterprise NX-01, humanity's first warp-capable ship. When Jonathan asks if the new ship will be bigger than 'Ambassador Pointy's', Henry admonishes him for the disrespect, insisting that he refer to the Vulcan Ambassador by his name, Soval.

Young Archer is critical of the Vulcans, who he believes have hindered humankind's efforts rather than helped. In this short introductory scene, it is the year 2121, meaning that it has been almost 60 years since Zefram Cochrane's first warp flight (in 2063) when they made first contact with the Vulcans.

The young Jonathan Archer was played by Marty Davis, while his father Henry was portrayed by Mark Moses.
2. Thirty years later, near Broken Bow, Oklahoma, a ship crashes into a cornfield. What species of alien does a human meet for the first time?

Answer: Klingon

The Klingon (whose name we learn later is Klaang) is on the run from two other unidentified aliens. Klaang lures his pursuers into a silo, which he then destroys with them inside. The owner of the farm shows up on the scene and shoots the Klingon with a plasma rifle.

Nice first contact.

In the followup investigation, it is learned that the Klingon was a courier en route to his homeworld Qo'noS.

Klaang was played by Tommy "Tiny" Lister, Jr.
3. With a mission to return the alien courier to his homeworld, Captain Archer must make the Enterprise ready for departure within three days. Where must he go to collect Ensign Hoshi Sato, his Communications Officer?

Answer: Brazil

Hoshi is on leave from Starfleet when Captain Archer finds her teaching some kind of trilling alien language to class of adult students. Archer tries to convince her to go with him now, citing the urgency of their mission, but Hoshi is not interested. That is, until Archer plays a recording of the Klingon language. With her professional interest piqued, Hoshi agrees to return with him.

Captain Archer (adult variety) was played by Scott Bakula, while the role of Hoshi Sato was acted by Linda Park.
4. The Vulcans insist on one of their own 'assisting' the Enterprise's mission. What is the rank of T'Pol, the female Vulcan officer assigned the duty?

Answer: Sub-commander

Sub-Commander T'Pol is not pleased to be attached to the mission, and is eager for it to be done. Her position aboard the Enterprise is both as First Officer and as Science Officer. Throughout the episode, Archer and T'Pol (and to a lesser extent Tucker and T'Pol) are at odds with each other. T'Pol is very reticent to provide anything but criticism about the mission and about human inadequacies.

The Vulcans regard the rank of subcommander to be less than a Captain, but higher than the human rank of commander.

The taciturn Sub-Commander T'Pol was portrayed by Jolene Blalock.
5. Captain Archer brings his pet beagle along with him on the Enterprise. What is the dog's name?

Answer: Porthos

Porthos is, of course, the name of one of the famed "Three Musketeers" by Alexandre Dumas. According to "Memory Alpha", the Star Trek Wiki, Porthos is one of a litter of four dogs, with the other three named Athos, Aramis and d'Artagnan.

In the first season, Porthos was played by Prada, who was also played Lou in the movie "Cats & Dogs", voiced by Tobey Maguire.
6. What command does Captain Archer give to officially 'launch' the Enterprise?

Answer: "Take her out, Mr. Mayweather... straight and steady."

Captain Archer would, of course, give this order to Ensign Travis Mayweather, who is the Helmsman of the Enterprise. He was played by Anthony Montgomery.

The other characters listed are Dr. Phlox (the Chief Medical Officer, played by John Billingsley), Lieutenant Malcolm Reed (the Tactical Officer, played by Dominic Keating), and Commander Malcolm Tucker III (the Chief Engineer, played by Connor Trinneer).
7. Why does Commander Tucker have the nickname 'Trip'?

Answer: Because his name is Charles Tucker III

As the third (or triple) in a row to carry the name Charles Tucker, 'Trip' earned his nickname for that simple reason.

During dinner with the Captain and T'Pol, Trip and Archer enjoy thick steaks while T'Pol has a vegetarian meal. As is already shown to be her habit, T'Pol criticizes the barbarity of humans, who still consume animal flesh. Unperturbed, Trip replies that his grandmother taught him to never judge a species by its eating habits.
8. The Enterprise is disabled and boarded by the same type of aliens that were chasing Klaang in Broken Bow, Oklahoma. They succeed in killing the courier.

Answer: False

Captain Archer and Hoshi are in Sickbay with Dr. Phlox attempting to interrogate Klaang, who had regained consciousness, when the aliens attack. Captain Archer is able to shoot one of the invaders, but is unable to prevent another from taking Klaang out from under their noses.

In the ensuing autopsy, Dr. Phlox notes that the alien is of a race called the Suliban, but that this particular Suliban is anything but normal. He points out several things that show the alien to be genetically engineered to a highly sophisticated level.
9. To which planetary system do the crew of the Enterprise go to follow their Suliban attackers?

Answer: Rigel

Hoshi transcribes and translates everything that the Klingon said during her attempt to interrogate him, and is able to work out everything but four terms, one of which is Rigel. When asked if she knows what any of the terms means, T'Pol admits that Rigel is a nearby planetary system, and that before crashing on Earth, Klaang had visited Rigel X.

With this further example of the withholding of information, Captain Archer gives Sub-Commander T'Pol a stern warning that any more of the same will result in being confined to somewhere cramped.
10. Which crew member does not accompany the away team to the planet?

Answer: Dr. Phlox

Six members of the crew join the away team: Archer, T'Pol, Tucker, Reed, Mayweather and Soto. The crew members are generally taken aback at the many different species and alienness of the world, but they soon have some leads to follow. Archer and Hoshi follow up on information of a Klingon enclave, but before they can contact any Klingons, they are captured by a number of Sulibans.
