Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This episode opened with a shot of the outside of a seedy motel named The Westerner. Ray and J.R. made their exit from adjoining rooms. Once outside Ray bade farewell with what phrase?

Answer: Goodbye, Waco

This was key to knowing where these two had spent the night - in Waco. In the real world, the distance between Waco and Dallas is (approx.) 100 miles. J.R. and Ray spent the night in adjoining rooms and judging from their hurried yet quiet exit they preferred to leave without any fond farewells from their bedmates - Wanda and Mary Lou.

In his haste J.R. spilled the contents of his jacket pockets onto the floor. He thought he had retrieved everything.
2. Talk about a talented guest star! What two-time Tony Award winner played the jealous and dangerous husband out to find the man who had slept with his wife? Since this guest spot he has been in many, many TV shows - ranging from "Miami Vice" (1987) to "Rules of Engagement" (2009); with a recurring role in "Dynasty" (1981).

Answer: Brian Dennehy

Besides his two Tony Awards (one for "Death of a Salesman" in 1999 and one for "Long Day's Journey Into Night" in 2003), Brian Dennehy has six Primetime Emmy Awards to his credit. All of these awards were garnered AFTER his appearance in 1978 as the jealous husband of one of J.R.'s one-night-stand-girlfriends. Brian's talent was apparent even in 1978.

This episode is worth watching just to see Dennehy; he was superb.
3. Ray was behind the wheel and J.R. was in the passenger seat of J.R.'s Mercedes when their talk of their most recent trysts was interrupted by an announcement on the car radio. Of what weather concern was a warning mentioned for all in the listening area?

Answer: A wind storm

The radio's weather report warned of "a wind storm" with winds exceeding 100 mph that had brought all activity to a halt in Houston and is moving toward Austin. Heeding the word of "a traffic advisory", J.R. and Ray decided it was best to hurry toward Southfork.

They mentioned this was especially important since all of their ranch employees had gone to San Antonio for a big festival Ray called "Fiesta Day".
4. The men from Waco made their way to Southfork and even managed to get inside the house. They introduced themselves as Peyton Allen and Luther Frick. While Frick made the telephone call to report their (supposed) stalled pickup truck, what did Allen offer to do for the women?

Answer: Start a fire in the fireplace

Not the least bit suspicious, Sue Ellen and Lucy did everything they possibly could to be gracious hostesses. Lucy, being Lucy, even took the close proximity of two people starting a fire in one fireplace to do her best to flirt (shamelessly) with Mr. Allen. Meanwhile, Sue Ellen went to the kitchen with the announcement she would make sandwiches for everybody.
5. The winds were definitely blowing and creating an eerie scene around Southfork. Apparently, J.R. and Ray were just as gullible as their women in accepting the two strangers' sad story and, thus, their offer of help. These four men and Lucy went out to bring the livestock back to the barn area. One person was thrown from the horse. Who?

Answer: Ray

Ah, the miracles of television! The storm was so severe all the livestock had to been herded to the barn yet all of the humans could hear each other across the pasture - as they called for help when Ray tumbled from his horse. J.R. brought the truck and Ray was hauled back to the ranch. Ray's accident only gave Frick and Allen an additional advantage.

It appeared that the men from Waco were now ready to put their revengeful plan (of justice, as they called it) into motion.
6. When the telephone rang, Frick insisted that Pam be the one to answer it. She showed relief that it was Bobby calling. With Frick's gun close to her head, Pam tried to use a bit of code to alert Bobby to the trouble at the ranch. What did she very innocently mention she and J.R. were doing that she hoped Bobby would realize was just not right?

Answer: Sitting down to play an afternoon of backgammon

Pam told Bobby not to come back to the ranch which was an obvious contradiction to her comments in an earlier conversation with him. This alerted/confused Bobby somewhat but when he heard Pam say she and J.R. were playing backgammon together he KNEW something was not right at home.

This led Bobby to insist that he and his father, Jock, to cancel their plans for dinner "in town" and get back to the ranch ASAP - and, in spite of the weather.
7. In a meager and unsuccessful attempt to overtake the intruders J.R., Ray and (even!) Pam were manhandled by Luther and Peyton. The racket aroused Miss Ellie who had been upstairs. She entered the den with a bold, "what's going on down here" but the two strangers with guns were enough to pause her query. Why had she been upstairs and not downstairs with the rest of the family?

Answer: She was in bed due to a migraine headache

We saw Sue Ellen as she cared for Miss Ellie while she rested to overcome her migraine. Miss Ellie had taken the opportunity of a darkened, quiet room to tell Sue Ellen that the two of them needed to make Pam more comfort at the ranch. That was Miss Ellie's way of beginning to accept Pam into the family.

It was clear Sue Ellen was concerned about losing her own toe-hold as "number one daughter-in-law". Miss Ellie was no help to the hostages. She was forced to join the scared, seated party in the den.
8. Frick and Allen seemed to enjoy their plight of getting even with the Ewings even more when they discovered a photograph of Sue Ellen as the winner of the Miss Texas pageant. Humiliation became a part of their revenge. They insisted Sue Ellen dress in her bathing suit and perform her talent as she did when in the Miss Texas pageant. What was her talent?

Answer: She sang

J.R. actually looked very comfortable as his tearful wife donned a strapless swim suit and the banner from her pageant days to sing - at gun point. It was during Sue Ellen's forced performance that Pam made Peyton admit to Luther that Luther's wife (Wanda - Peyton's sister) had fabricated the rape story to prevent a confrontation with him. Peyton wanted to continue with the revenge but Luther suddenly had a change of heart.
9. Bobby and Jock made it to the ranch and inside the back door to find Ray tied to a chair in the kitchen but able to explain the scenario and the trouble. Luther changed his mind about revenge but Peyton insisted he still wanted "what they had come to get". Which of the women did Peyton grab to take upstairs?

Answer: Lucy

Luther Frick was ready to place the blame of the marital infidelity on his wife and forget about this plan. With Peyton, Allen is really more about the working class versus wealthy than defending the honor of his sister and her friend. Jock and Bobby jumped Allen as he started up the stairs - dragging Lucy. That move gave J.R. the opening to knock the gun out of Frick's hand.

In true patriarch fashion, Jock held a gun (one of their own guns) on the intruders and told them (as they left the house), "If you ever show your faces around here again ... I'll kill ya".
10. As the battered Ewing family members begin to console each other in the aftermath of the trauma Sue Ellen is left alone the longest amount of time. Finally, J.R. makes his way across the room and attempts to help Sue Ellen compose herself. What does Sue Ellen say to J.R. at this time?

Answer: Nothing, she just walked past him - and, Ray

Sue Ellen gave a stellar performance with this closing scene. It was in the last few minutes of this episode that her place in this series made a turn. She exhibited a gamut of emotions and did a convincing job. According to the opening and closing credits of the show, the character Sue Ellen is not a main character.

This performance must have sealed the deal for her - if there was to be a "next season". A pivotal scene for J.R., too, as his entire family made no effort to hide their contempt for him as they left him alone in the den.
