In an earlier episode with Diane, Diane ended up playing for the Cheers team because she felt insulted by Gary. It turned out she was a good bowler because she did it in college as an easy P.E. credit.

It was found broken a little later. Sam went to Gary's Olde Towne Tavern but he didn't retaliate. Instead he asked out one of Gary's waitresses.
