JR Martinez, born on June 14th, 1983 in Shreveport, Louisiana originated the role of Brot Monroe, Taylor Thompson's fiancé who was presumed dead in Iraq. Brot served in the U.S. Army and the show wanted to cast the role with a real life Iraq War veteran. Martinez served in Iraq from March to April of 2003.

In April of 2003, he drove a Humvee that went over a landmine and he suffered serious burns to his body. He was discharged and, for the past several years, has been a motivational speaker for other Iraq War veterans.
