OK, eset kindly sent me loads of stuff about the Spartans so here you go. Sparta was the most belligerent city-state in ancient Greece, and the society was based on a military structure. Children were taken from their parents at a young age and enrolled in rigorous schooling, including martial training for the boys. Spartans belived women were almost as good as men while the other city-states still considered them hardly worth thinking about.

The Spartans beat the Athenians in the Pelopenesian War, but were then conquered by Alexander the Great. Thanks to eset for this info. Also three hundred Spartans held off an army of over a million Persians at the Battle of Thermopalae. (from unblest)
