Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When Basil purchases a moose's head to hang in the hotel lobby, the Major mistakenly believes it can talk! Which country does he suggest to Basil it might have been made in?

Answer: Japan

The Major, superbly played by Ballard Berkeley, is a great creation.
Absent-minded and eccentric, if not completely mad, his surreal ramblings steal many a scene.
2. Basil is away from the hotel whilst some building work is undertaken in the lobby. He phones for a progress report but frustrated by Manuel's inability to supply the necessary information, instructs the hapless waiter to insult one of the builders. What did Manuel call the "man with beard"?

Answer: "A hideous orang-utan."

The unfortunate Manuel is left in charge of reception but his poor English was always going to let him down. Retribution by the "hideous orang-utan" was swift and painful!
3. Which breed of dog bites Polly whilst she is serving in the dining-room?

Answer: Shih Tzu

Polly gets revenge by feeding the pampered pooch a large dose of mustard with its sausages.
The Major is on form as usual thinking that lapdogs come from Lapland!
4. Mr Carnegie, the public health inspector, issues Basil with a long list of items which must be addressed if the hotel is to remain open. The problems include two dead birds in the water tank. What type of birds?

Answer: Pigeons

Manuel cannot understand how two 'pigs' could have managed to get onto the roof.
Of course one of the main concerns is Manuel's pet 'hamster' which has escaped and is loose in the hotel. The ever helpful Major tries to blast it with a shotgun!
5. Manuel has a pet rodent which he calls Basil; everyone else knows it to be a rat, but what does Manuel believe it to be?

Answer: A Siberian hamster

Basil insists Manuel gets rid of his 'hamster', but Polly and Terry conspire to let him keep it. Predictably it escapes causing utter confusion.
6. After being given a tip by a rare satisfied guest, Basil wins a tidy sum of money betting on a horse. What was the name of the winning horse?

Answer: Dragonfly

Basil was never going to be destined to keep the money, especially after entrusting his winnings to the Major!
The other three names were incorrect answers given by Polly during a bizzare game of charades with Basil, when they are trying to conceal Basil's winnings from Sybil.
7. When the partly deaf and very brusque Mrs Richards complains about the view from her room, Basil launches into a splendid tirade about the views she might be expecting to see from a Torquay hotel bedroom. Herds of which animal were in Basil's list?

Answer: Wildebeest

Amongst the other suggestions Basil sarcastically puts forward are: "The Hanging Gardens of Babylon" and "Krakatoa erupting".
8. Thoroughly annoyed and frustrated by Mrs Richards' rude and uncompromising attitude, Basil threatens to do what to her?

Answer: "I'll...put a bat up your nightdress!"

"I'll visit you in the small hours and put a bat up your nightdress!"
How Basil enjoyed Mrs Richards' stay at the hotel!
9. What colour is Puss, the hotel cat?

Answer: Black

Puss appears several times in the episode, "Basil The Rat". When Basil sees the cat vomiting he jumps to the (wrong) conclusion that she has eaten rat poison, this has rather upsetting consequences for the diners.
10. When the unfortunate Mr Leeman dies during the night, Basil panics about what to do with the body. For a short time he keeps it in the office, until the Major, in a rare visit to the real world, tells Basil to move the body as it might attract what?

Answer: Flies

Basil at his manic best, attempting to conceal the truth about the dead man, but succeeding only in making matters much, much worse.
