Buffy had slashed Caleb across the stomach but he wasn't quite dead. Buffy ended up slicing Caleb right down the center, then saying to Angel "he had to split."

Angel could smell Spike on her and he wanted to know if Buffy was in love with Spike or if Spike was her boyfriend. Instead of admitting anything else she told Angel that Spike was in her heart.
