Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What famous composer does the Doctor talk about at the start of "Before the Flood"?

Answer: Beethoven

The Doctor discusses Ludwig Van Beethoven, who really did exist and whom the Doctor apparently visited. He used the composer to illustrate the concept of causal loops (AKA bootstrap or ontological paradox), a time travel paradox in which events appear to be self-generated with no independent point of origin. The paradox gets its name from the Robert Heinlein short story "By His Bootstraps".

Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) may well be the greatest musician in history, as he composed several of his greatest works while completely deaf. His Ninth Symphony is the anthem for the European Union. If you have not heard it, stop playing this quiz right now and find it on You Tube.

At the start of "Before the Flood", the Doctor plays the opening notes of Beethoven's Fifth Symphony on the electric guitar. And that really is Peter Capaldi playing. He was a rock musician before he got into acting. The opening credits feature Capaldi on the guitar.
2. In "Before the Flood," what language are the signs in the abandoned village written in?

Answer: Russian

The village was a training facility for spies, to train them how to operate in Russia and Eastern Europe. The signs were all in the Cyrillic alphabet and the town contained Soviet propaganda posters will Lenin on them.

The whole crisis began because Prentiss, the Tivolian, chose to bury the Fisher King on what he referred to as a "barren, savage outpost." We call it Earth. The Fisher King turned out to be less dead than believed, and caused a great deal of trouble 140 years in the future.
3. According to the Doctor, what year had they arrived in?

Answer: 1980

The Doctor took a quick test of the air and determined that they were in 1980. Alice O'Donnell noted several historical events that were part of the "Doctor Who" canon - Harold Saxon (a human version of The Master who was elected Prime Minister) and the giant bat of 2049 (from "Kill the Moon") - and also mentioned "The Minister of War", which the Doctor had never heard of. The Doctor decided he would find out eventually, so it was best not to know too much about the future.

The last time the Doctor was in the 1980s was aboard a Soviet submarine in "Cold War", an adventure with the Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith).
4. Which member of the refinery crew dies during "Before the Flood"?

Answer: O'Donnell

Lance Corporal O'Donnell is killed by the Fisher King. She makes the classic mistake of splitting off from the others. Bennett was in love with O'Donnell, but never told her. Her last words to him were "Don't die."

O'Donnell was played by Morven Christie, who has been acting since 2004. She has played both Hero and Juliet with the Royal Shakespeare Company. Television viewers would know her as Jane Bennett from "Lost in Austen" (2008) and Amanda Kendall in "Grantchester" (2014).
5. How far did The Doctor and Bennett jump into the past?

Answer: 30 minutes

The Doctor attempted to leave the abandoned city, and the TARDIS shut him down cold, because there were already enough paradoxes going on already. The TARDIS sent them 30 minutes into the past, to roughly the time they met Prentiss the undertaker.
6. Where did The Doctor finally confront the Fisher King?

Answer: the basement of the church

The Doctor confronts the Fisher King in the basement of the church. He has dragged the suspended animation chamber there. There is a great deal of bantering - surprising since the Doctor doesn't like bantering. The Fisher King makes grandiose claims about conquering Earth, in keeping with many other "Doctor Who" villains.

The Doctor manages to upend the Fisher King by purging the coordinates from his memory. This enables him to use the suspended animation chamber to escape and wake up in 2119 - that's quite a long nap.

The Fisher King was played by stuntman Neil Fingleton. He appeared on "Game of Thrones" as Mag the Mighty (2014) and was a stunt performer in "The Avengers: Age of Ultron" (2015). The voice of the Fisher King was Peter Serafinowicz, who has been acting since the late 1990s. He has done voice work on many animated series, including "Archer" (2011-13), "South Park" (2006) and "Axe Cop" (2013-15). Serafinowicz also briefly had a sketch comedy show back in 2007.

Corey Taylor, the lead singer of the band SlipKnot, did the roar of the Fisher King. Taylor has one of the most remarkable ranges (five and a half octaves) of any singer in popular music.
7. The Doctor ripped the right shoulder of his jacket when he fell down.

Answer: true

The Doctor tackled Bennett to keep him from attempting to save Prentiss and further messing up the time stream. In the process, his right shoulder got ripped. An important rip, because it showed up on his ghostly image in the future.

Bennett was played by Asher Ali, who has been acting since 2009. Ali has acted in the Royal Shakespeare Company. He is probably best known for playing a terrorist in the film "Four Lions" (2010) and a camp counselor in the channel E4 comedy "Beaver Falls" (2011-2012).
8. Why did the dam collapse in "Before the Flood"?

Answer: The Doctor blew it up

The mystery of the missing power cell was solved. The Doctor rigged it to overload, causing a massive explosion that caused the dam to collapse. The last we see of the Fisher King, he was being swept away by an enormous wall of water.

The sonic sunglasses once again came in handy, as they allowed the Doctor to send a holographic "Ghost Doctor" to send messages to himself, which allowed him to develop the plan that allowed him to defeat the Fisher King.
9. Near the end of "Before the Flood", Lunn tells Cass that he loves her. How does Cass react?

Answer: She kisses him

After they have survived the encounter with the Fisher King, Bennet presses Lunn to tell Cass how he feels. Lunn signs to Cass that he loves her, and at first she acts surprised, but then she grabs Tim and kisses him.

Zaqi Ismail played translator Tim Lunn. Ismail recently graduated from college, and "Doctor Who" was his first television role. Ismail is fluent in British Sign Language, as his older sister is deaf.

Sophie Leigh Stone played Cass. Stone was the first deaf actress to win a place at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts. She crossed paths with Alexis Kingston (Dr River Song) on the TV mini-series "Marchlands" in 2011.
10. Who directed the series 9 episode "Before the Flood"?

Answer: Daniel O'Hara

Daniel O'Hara has been working in television since 2006. "Under the Lake" and "Before the Flood" are his first work as a director for "Doctor Who". O'Hara worked with Tony Whithouse on "Being Human" in 2012 and 2013, and with Asher Ali on "Beaver Falls" in 2011.

This is Toby Whithouse's fifth time writing for "Doctor Who". Along with this season's two-parter, Whithouse wrote "School Reunion" (2006), "The Vampires of Venice" (2010), "The God Complex" (2011) and "A Town Called Mercy" (2012).

Neil Fingleton was the stuntman in the Fisher King costume.

Steven Moffat does a lot of writing for "Doctor Who" but not this time. Moffatt has been the show runner for "Doctor Who" since 2010, and has written 40 episodes since the show rebooted in 2005. His credits include "Blink" (2007) and the River song story arc.
