Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. `So you want to know about the war.' `The Aftermyth of War' is a wonderful sketch about WWII. For what reason did one of Dudley Moore's characters get turned down for joining `The Few'?

Answer: They already had too many

This sketch is in my opinion the greatest 'Beyond the Fringe' sketch, loaded with an assortment of smaller jokes all combined into one narrative.
2. In `Steppes in the Right Direction,' what great tune did the member of the Moscow State Circus continuously play?

Answer: `God Save the Queen'

`You'll have to speak louder! They don't speak any English!'
3. In the `Royal Box' sketch, what was the name of the special regiment Queen Victoria created?

Answer: `The Royal Bengal Crouchers'

You see they had ceremonial medals and ceremonial garters. The medals would get caught in the garters forcing them into a crouched position. The Queen saw this. She said, `I like that. Keep it.' And the `Royal Bengal Crouchers' were born.
4. From Alan Bennet's recitation of `T.E. Lawrence' when he went looking for Lawrence at his cottage in Cloud's Hill Lawrence was at home.

Answer: False

The door was opened `by a small rather unprepossessing figure, slight of frame, fair haired, with the ruddy, gleaming face of a schoolboy. It was a schoolboy.' He had come to the wrong house.
5. In the sketch `Man Bites God,' we are treated to a informal religious discussion. Dudley Moore's character is disturbed by some of the violence in the Bible. Specifically what item bothers him the most?

Answer: Working a needle up the eye of a camel

`I think we can turn a blind eye to the whole affair. After all, the camel had to.'
6. In `Memoirs of a Miner,' for what reason was the miner not able to have become a judge?

Answer: Didn't have the Latin

`The trouble with being a miner is that as soon as you're too old and stupid you have to go. Where as the exact opposite applies to judges.'
7. Why was Mr. Spigot turned down for the role of Tarzan?

Answer: He only had one leg

Peter Cook thought Dudley Moore's Mr. Spigot had a lovely right leg and that it was lovely for the role. He had nothing against the right leg. Unfortunately, neither did Mr. Spigot.
8. According to the sketch 'Home Thoughts From Abroad,' which of these cities would be considered America?

Answer: Boston

New York is New York, but it's not America. Then there's Washington, but that's a bit like Paris, not America. Then there's LA, but that's not America anymore than San Francisco and that's not America. Then there's the north, North America but that's Canada not America. Then there's Boston, the Cape, Massachusetts. That's just a little piece of England. Now that's America!
9. What type of item are they trying to sell in the 'Bollard' sketch?

Answer: cigarette

This sketch involves very camp characters preparing for a commercial, but when they get in front of the camera they suddenly act very butch- for a while at least.
10. In 'The Great Train Robbery' sketch, who is the prime suspect in the case?

Answer: The Archbishop of Canterbury

Through the use of the identikit, which puts together the appearance of the criminal face and not the actual face, they have come up with the appearance of the face of the Archbishop of Canterbury who they are currently beating down at the station. Fortunately, the archbishop no longer resembles the picture they've built up.
