Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The episode opens with the crew of Voyager preparing for an inspection by the Devore. On which deck do the Devore soldiers not materialize to start the inspection?

Answer: 6

In addition to decks 15, 11, and 4, the Devore also materialize on Deck 1 (in Janeway's ready room). Immediately upon transporting to Voyager, the Devore inspector Kashyk begins playing classical music throughout the entire ship to "relax" the crew. No soldiers materialize on deck 6.
2. During the inspection, Torres is asked why power has been routed through the transporter system. She claims that it is part of a routine diagnostic. Where does the Devore inspector tell her that the problem is in their transporters?

Answer: The primary energizing coils

Although Torres claims that they have been having trouble with their imaging scanners, the Devore inspector is quick to tell her that the problem is in the primary energizing coils, followed with a curt, "Focus your efforts there." Torres replies with, "Thanks for the tip," and a slight shake of her head.
3. What symphony movement is being played on the ship during the inspection?

Answer: Mahler symphony #1, movement 2

Kashyk is interested in the many contradictions in human culture. For instance, how violence and beauty or science and faith are "all somehow mingled harmoniously. Like the counterpoint of this music." A reference to Mahler's 1st symphony, movement 2, which they are listening to.

It is also the theme from which the episode gets its title. Janeway claims that Kashyk is getting to know the musical database better than she does. Kashyk later claims to like Tchaikovsky the most of any Earth composer.
4. How many telepaths were being held in transporter suspension on Voyager?

Answer: 15

It is difficult for Kim and Seven to consolidate the patterns of the telepaths, since they were in suspension for so long. Janeway orders Kim to increase power to the imaging scanners, and they are able to rematerialize all of them. They had 12 Brenari refugees (consisting of 8 adults and 4 children) plus 3 Voyager crewmembers (Commander Tuvok, Ensign Vorik, and Ensign Jurot).
5. Voyager comes across a Devore scout ship with only one person on board, Inspector Kashyk. He tells Janeway that it is urgent that they speak. What is the rank of the security officer who accompanies him to her ready room?

Answer: Ensign

A female security officer escorts Kashyk to the captain's ready room. Janeway tells dismisses her by saying, "It's all right, ensign."

It is likely that Tuvok did not have any interaction with Kashyk, since Voyager was still trying to claim that they had no telepaths on board up to that point.
6. Voyager searches for a man named Torot who is an expert on wormholes. After finding him, he attempts to evade them. When they finally establish communication with him, he claims that he cannot slow down to talk because he is late for a very important conference. Kashyk tells Janeway, "This is a wast of time. Disable his ship." To which Janeway replies, "That's what we call ________, Inspector."

Answer: overkill

Janeway gets him to talk by having Torot transported directly to their bridge.
7. Janeway and Kashyk work in the mess hall to try to extrapolate the next location of the wormhole. While they wait for the computer to complete the subspatial transkinetic analysis of the data, Kashyk looks outside of the windows at what the Devore call the Kolyan Kolyar. What does Kolyan Kolyar mean, according to Kashyk?

Answer: infinite spirals

Kashyk says that he spent years gazing at the lights of the Kolyan Kolyar as a boy. Janeway compares them to the Aurora Borealis back on Earth.
8. Eventually the crew is able to develop a model that narrows down the location of the wormhole's next appearance to what radius?

Answer: 200,000 kilometers

They are unable to pinpoint the exact location until they arrive at the Tehara system, but they know that it will open remain open for two minutes at most.
9. During which part of the usual protocol speech given by the Devore inspector does Janeway cut him off as Voyager is boarded for their final inspection?

Answer: Gaharay vessel, prepare to be inspected.

As the inspector says, "Gaharay vessel, prepare to be..." Janeway interjects with, "We've been through three inspections. Please explain why another is necessary." He continues his routine speech without answering her.
10. After Janeway admits that they have located the wormhole, Kashyk sends Prax to cargo bay 1 to locate the transporter patterns of the telepaths. Instead of the telepaths, Prax finds cargo containers filled with what?

Answer: vegetables

Janeway had sent the telepaths ahead on two shuttlecraft equipped with the Devore refractive shielding. The telepaths are successful at leaving Devore space through the wormhole, and Kashyk decides to let Voyager leave without punishment to avoid having the failure of letting the telepaths escape on his record.
