Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Boy! I go away for a couple of weeks and you guys get engaged, Chen's pregnant, Malucci's blond, Admin looks different and I can't remember my combination." Who said this after a three month absence from the ER?

Answer: John Carter

Carter said this to Mark and Elizabeth at the beginning of the episode, after returning to work for the first time since his stint in rehab. Indeed a lot seemed to have changed while Carter was away. The state medical board had even forced the hospital to clean out his locker, so he had to borrow Mark's until he was assigned one of his own.
2. Why did one patient mutilate his ears with a pair of kitchen shears?

Answer: In order to look like a Vulcan from "Star Trek"

The patient in question originally came into the ER with earache. However when Abby and Jing-Mei removed his hat, he admitted that he had taken a pair of kitchen shears to his ears. Stunned, Jing-Mei asked why he would give himself "Doberman ears", only for the man to reveal that they were supposed to be Vulcan. On hearing that he would need a "Psych consult", he appeared more concerned with missing his "sci-fi convention", prompting Abby to reply that she and Jing-Mei were "moving at warp speed".
3. Who ordered one member of staff to focus on only "minor medical, no trauma. No suturing. No needles. No narcotics. And absolutely no surgical procedures"?

Answer: Kerry Weaver

Kerry said this to Carter at the beginning of this episode, reminding him that "in order to facilitate" his return to the ER, they had "to implement a few rules". This meant that Carter was left treating only minor medical ailments. Moreover he also had to go to other doctors in order to get prescriptions for his patients.
4. Who found out that they no longer had a job in this episode?

Answer: Peter Benton

When Peter told Dr. Romano that he "had problems getting into the garage" and "onto the computer", Romano looked surprised to see him at the hospital. It turned out that Peter's privileges had "been revoked", and he no longer had a job, as his "tattletaling to the inspector general cost" Romano $50,000. Having explained this, Romano retorted that he "had to recoup those monies somewhere", and "was forced to eliminate the Attending position", leaving Peter out of a job.
5. "So, who's watching the drugstore cowboy?" Which tactless member of staff asked this question?

Answer: Robert Romano

Romano made this insensitive comment about John Carter, while talking to Kerry Weaver. Clearly riled, Kerry told Romano that as she was "head of the ER", Carter was her responsibility. Unable to resist provoking Kerry further, Romano snidely pointed out that it was under her supervision that Carter developed "his drug addiction" in the first place.
6. What happened to the patient who was convinced that he was going to spontaneously combust?

Answer: He caught fire

When a patient came into the ER convinced that he was going to spontaneously combust, Kerry and Jing-Mei immediately called for a Psych consult. Humouring the man, they assured him that they would turn off all oxygen and make sure that he did not catch fire. However when the Psych consult arrived, the patient was found on fire, and yet there was nothing to explain it.
7. Who kissed Luka Kovac?

Answer: Abby Lockhart

When Abby and Kovac were sitting outside, Abby was complaining about the fact that "as a med student", she "screwed up everything", even things she could do with her eyes closed. Kovac however, disagreed, claiming it was all in her head, and that while she was "a good nurse", she "could be a great doctor". He just felt that she needed "a little confidence". This prompted Abby to kiss Kovac on the lips, before apologising and going back inside.
8. What did Carter have to do at the end of his shift?

Answer: Take a drug test

As part of his contract, Carter had to take random drug tests in order to prove to Mark and Kerry that he was drug free. In order to prove that they were serious, Kerry and Mark made him give a urine sample at the end of his very first shift back in the ER, which was supervised by Mark.
9. Why was Kerry angry at Abby for putting a chest tube in a patient?

Answer: The hospital's insurance did not cover her to do so

As Abby was forced to take 3 months off from being a medical student, she went back to being a nurse. However, when Kerry caught her putting a chest tube in a patient, she was extremely angry, as the "malpractice insurance no longer" covered Abby "doing anything outside the scope of normal nursing practices".
10. What were Carter and his paraplegic patient doing on the roof?

Answer: Flying paper aeroplanes

As Carter was only allowed to treat minor medical ailments, after he treated a paraplegic patient for a Urinary Tract Infection, he spent a little time with him. The boy made paper aeroplanes, and after one hit Kerry Weaver, Carter took him up to the roof in order to fly them.
