Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "It's airborne. We need to lock this place down." When Carter said this, what disease did he think two of his patients were suffering from?

Answer: Smallpox

Carter said this to Susan Lewis after examining two children covered in "firm, deep-seated pustules, all in the same stage of development." When Susan suggested that it had to be "just a bad case of the chickenpox", Carter explained that the patients' symptoms matched "all the major criteria", including "centrifugal distribution sparing the trunk."
2. Which member of staff was the first to be quarantined?

Answer: Jing-Mei Chen

As the staff discussed the two children's symptoms, Chen revealed that she had treated them "last Tuesday", after "they presented with the flu". She also revealed that she herself had a fever, prompting Carter to respond with "You need to be quarantined." While some members of staff believed this to be too hasty, Carter reminded Susan that she had to "come up with a plan now". As a result, Chen was "quarantined to Exam 4".
3. Both children died as a result of contracting the mystery virus.

Answer: False

Although both children were suffering from the same thing, the little girl was in a more serious condition than her brother. When she stopped breathing, Carter, Abby and Pratt did everything they could to save her, but to no avail. Soon after, the little boy's condition worsened, but unlike his sister, Carter and Abby were able to revive him.
4. What did a mob of angry patients use in order to try to break their way out of the ER?

Answer: A gurney

While waiting for confirmation that the virus was indeed smallpox, a group of patients banded together to find a way to escape the ER. Refusing to listen to reason, they grabbed hold of a nearby gurney, and tried to use it to smash their way out of the front doors of the ER.
5. Which two members of staff kissed during this episode?

Answer: Abby and Carter

Once Carter and Abby had stabilized the little boy, they were told that they too would have to be quarantined. When an anxious Abby asked Carter whether he thought the worst was over, Carter responded by kissing her.
6. "Biggest public health emergency of the century, and I'm stuck here." Which disgruntled staff member said this?

Answer: Jing-Mei Chen

Chen said this to Gallant, while "quarantined in Exam 4". Clearly annoyed at being away from the action, Chen was further aggravated by the news that she would be sharing her room with a quarantined patient.
7. Nobody received a vaccine for the virus in this episode.

Answer: True

Although the smallpox vaccine was stockpiled in Atlanta, it was not given to anyone until the following episode. A video showing how the vaccine should be administered was shown, but at the end of this episode the nature and origin of the virus had not been confirmed.
8. "I heard the Russians had some on ice." Which desk clerk was heard saying this when discussing the virus?

Answer: Jerry

Most of the staff were present at the admit desk when Jerry said this at the start of the episode. While the doctors discussed the improbability of the virus being smallpox, Jerry came out with the above quotation. He also mentioned the possible involvement of a terrorist group, before being silenced by the rest of the staff.
9. Where had the family with the infected children been living for the past year?

Answer: Central Africa

The children's mother told Carter that the whole family had been living in Central Africa, as her husband worked for the State Department. Explaining that they had visited numerous places, including hotels and embassies, she also revealed that they had only been back in the US for a fortnight.
10. "What? I was just calling my mom. I love you too, Mom." Who was Jerry REALLY on the phone to, when he said these words?

Answer: A local news station

Jerry said these words to Susan Lewis, after she caught him on the phone to a local news station. After recognising Jerry's voice on the television, Susan caught sight of Jerry using the hospital's phone. As Susan marched over to him, Jerry caught sight of her and hung up, coming out with the above quotation in the process.
