Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. (Hint: there is an episode told from his point of view in the second half of the series.) Aside from veterans, who is the first person you see in the series?

Answer: Roe

He's first, then Compton, then Welsh and Ranney, and so on.
2. What United States Army item(s) do Malarkey and More steal in "Carentan" that Malarkey has to explain away to Sobel in "Replacements"?

Answer: A motorcycle

They have a grand ol' time cruising the countryside in one of the lighter scenes in the series. Malarkey now has a book out called "Easy Company Soldier" in which he talks about his war experiences.
3. Who tries to get coffee and a bacon sandwich from Winters' orderly in "Crossroads"?

Answer: Nixon

Nixon tries to exploit Winters' orderly like this. It doesn't work.
4. Babe gets a "Dear John" letter from Doris. What is a "Dear John" letter?

Answer: A break-up letter

Guarnere calls it a "Dear Babe" letter. He mentions it because the plane they were getting into had the words "Darling Doris" scrawled on it. Sadly, Babe isn't the only soldier to get dumped this way. Compton's girlfriend and Nixon's wife also sever ties with them while the men are overseas.
5. According to the interviews in the first episode, how much extra were the paratroopers paid per month?

Answer: $50

For some veterans, the increased pay was the incentive to enlist. Also particularly harrowing in these interviews is the veteran who says that three men who were 4F in his town "committed suicide because they couldn't go. Different time."
6. Joe Toye is happy to be going to Europe. If he kills Hitler, he thinks Roosevelt will change the name of what holiday to "Joe Toye Day"?

Answer: Thanksgiving

Wishful fantasizing on his part. It shows how naive these men are about war before they experience it.
7. What did Winters hide in his pants during the drop in "Day of Days," the retrieval of which caused the men of the 82nd to double take?

Answer: A compass

The real Winters actually did that on D-Day. As well, he had a silk map of Normandy sewn inside his trousers. After the war, he refused to return it.
8. In "Bastogne," what does Gordon say to Lipton after being paralyzed?

Answer: "Lip, you're standing on my hand."

Lipton says that Gordon really said this. Gordon doesn't notice that Lipton's standing on his hand until he turns his head and sees it because he can't feel anything, and Lip doesn't notice because he and Roe are too busy applying medical aid. A veteran in the opening of this episode mentions a man who lost his arm and asked his friends to "Get my wristwatch off my arm." Guarnere says the line about the states in "The Breaking Point." I made up the other one.
9. Who often amuses the men with his impersonations?

Answer: Luz

He does impressions of Sobel, Horton, Dike, Sink, and John Wayne. The men think he's funny...except when he dusts off his John Wayne impression during the movie.
10. What makes Nixon so upset about his wife's divorce?

Answer: She's taking the dog

"It's not even her dog! It's my dog--she's taking MY dog!" It turned out that the real Nixon did get to keep his dog after the divorce.
11. In "The Breaking Point," Penkala says it's an Easy Company tradition to get shot in which part of the body?

Answer: Butt

At this point, Wynn and Compton have been shot there, Compton through both buttocks. By the end of the episode, Perconte has also been shot in the butt.
12. Lt. Jones tells Nixon that he graduated from West Point on 6 June 1944. What is Nixon's response?

Answer: He laughs

Great laugh. Then he says, "Okay, don't get hurt." Green lieutenants did not have long lifespans out on the front lines.
13. Who never takes or tries to take anything from Perconte during the course of the show?

Answer: Guarnere

In "Carentan," Dukeman is seen trying to relieve Perco of one of his five watches. In part nine, Speirs tries to make off with his lighter, and in "Bastogne," Roe successfully takes Perconte's scissors, needing them as a medic. As well, Muck tries to take some of his spaghetti in part one. Why is everyone trying to steal from Perconte?
14. "What do you think you'll do after this?" "Get some breakfast." This exchange comes from "Points." Who are the speakers?

Answer: Nixon and Winters

Nixon means after the war in asking his question while Winters thinks he means after his swim. Nixon wants to offer Winters a job after the war.
15. Which episode won a Writer's Guild Award?

Answer: Bastogne

Bruce McKenna wrote this episode that centers on one of Easy Company's medics, Eugene Roe. This episode was also nominated for a Humanitas Award, which recognizes stories that celebrate humanity, freedom, and love.
