"Fruits Basket" Character Quiz - Hatori Sohma

Of the four possible answers, only one would not describe him. That is "shousetsuka", which means "fiction novelist" and would more accurately describe Shigure Sohma. He is a "tatsu", which is the name for the fifth sign of the Chinese Zodiac: the Dragon.

He happens to represent the Year of the Dragon. Unfortunately, his Zodiac form is a "kaiba", or seahorse. His profession is a family doctor or "kateii". Since a Sohma often transforms when sick, the Sohma family doctor must be someone who knows the secret. Who better than a family member? Ironically, "tatsu" is Japanese for "Year of the Dragon" and "tatsunootoshigo" is another word for "seahorse".

A seahorse is known as a baby dragon. So is Hatori a baby dragon?

The smallest of all the members of the Zodiac and the only one who can't survive on land, Hatori takes all measures possible to avoid people finding out about his form. This is mostly because he's embarrassed about the fact that he should become a dragon, yet becomes a tiny seahorse. Shigure loves poking fun at him for this.

Ayame's arrival was loud and pompous, as always. He claimed that he was trying to keep quiet, but it's probably impossible for Ayame to do that. Surprisingly enough, Shigure was being quiet and letting Hatori sleep.

According to Natsuki Takaya (creator of "Fruits Basket"), Hatori is the tallest of all the characters. He is also one of the three "senior" Zodiac members. The other two are his best friends, Ayame (the Snake) and Shigure (the Dog).

Hatori warns Shigure that, sooner or later, either Yuki or Kyou will find out about their plans and turn on him. He says that he will not side with Shigure and Akito, but he won't oppose them either.

Hatori, Shigure, and Ayame grew up together. Of the three, Hatori is the most mature (though you often get the impression he has a mischievous side to him). The lecherous Ayame (whose Zodiac sign is the Snake), will only obey Hatori... because (as Shigure claims) he "admires" him.

Momiji was climbing all over the booth, arguing with Kyou, and generally being a nuisance. Instead of reprimanding him, however, Hatori just stood there and conversed with Yuki. As Yuki says in the dubbed version, "you call this looking after him?".

He does, however, reprimand Hatsuharu when he finds out the boy has been lost for three days while trying to find the Sohma house. Incidentally, Hatsuharu and Momiji are the same age, though Momiji looks a lot younger (they're 15).

Answer: Haa-kun

He's called "Ha'ri" mostly in the dubbed version. Shigure calls him "Haa-san", and Ayame calls him "Tori-san". "Haa-kun" is what Shigure calls Hatsuharu Sohma.

When going to the Sohma summer house, Hatori drives a car with the steering wheel on the left side (Japanese cars have the wheel on the right side, like in England). If you notice, he wears Western suits as well (most of the other characters wear Japanese attire). Hatori is also an avid reader, with most of his books being Western literature.

His house, however, is in the traditional Japanese style, with shoji doors and everything.

They complained about how Hatori always allowed everyone to pile their problems on him. They were mostly referring to the incident with Kana, who was once Hatori's girlfriend before he was forced to suppress her memories of their time together. She was married to another, and refused to go to the wedding because he was afraid her memories would resurface. So instead he suffered in silence, afraid to see her again and afraid to love another because he feared the same would happen.
