Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which is not a rule that the manager says to Walter in regards to the room for rent in the witch-house?

Answer: No visitors

The story opens with Walter Gilman visiting a house regarding a room for rent. He explains to the manager that he will follow all of his rules and that he won't be much of a bother since he's a grad student working on his thesis for university. The manager complains that he doesn't like renting to students, so he needs an extra month's rent in advance, just for the trouble. Walter explains that it's hard for him to come by money, what with school and all.

The manager also explains that there's a non-refundable $100 security deposit on the furniture in case of damages. Since he knows he won't get any room cheaper, Walter says he'll take the place.

He soon realizes the problems with it, right off the bat.
2. While Walter is working on his thesis, he's interrupted by screams from next door. What does Walter's neighbour claim is attacking her?

Answer: A rat

Walter works on his thesis, which involves three planes connecting at an odd angle to produce a somewhat malformed angle. When he looks around his new room, he finds that his 3D computer model of the vertex matches the corner of his room exactly. Perplexed by this, he begins to get back to work, but he's interrupted by a loud scream from next door.

He rushes over to find his neighbour holding her baby up high and trying to kick away a rat. He kicks the rat towards the corner of the room and it scurries into its hole in the wall before he heads downstairs to talk to the manager about an infestation.

He demands that the man call an exterminator, but the manager claims that the woman could claim that the baby ate rat poison left out by the exterminator, and that he wouldn't take a chance at the impending trial.

The manager assumes the man across the hall put him up to it. He gives Walter a hammer and nails to shut off the hole. Before he leaves, the man across the hall asks if the rat had a human face.
3. What is the name of Francis' son?

Answer: Danny

Francis (or Frankie, as she likes to be called) thanks Walter for the help and calls him a hero to her and her son, Danny. When Walter mentions that he's at the university, Frankie notes her high hopes for Danny and Walter goes on his way. That night, Walter falls asleep during his studies, and fails to notice as the oddly-shaped corner of his room opens as though it were a portal. Walter is awakened by a large rat with a human head who mentions that 'she' will be coming for him.

He screams himself awake and notices a rat scurrying off to a hole in the corner. Frankie later knocks on his door to make sure he's okay and she offers him a cup of tea.
4. What is Walter writing his thesis on?

Answer: String theory

When Walter takes his cup of tea in Frankie's room, she asks what he's studying at the university, and he begins a long-winded explanation of string theory and his fascination with the universe's planes. He says that his theory is regarding certain membranes, and when they cross at certain angles, they can create a point which can be crossed between dimensions.

This explains his fascination with his corner. Frankie explains that the manager is forcing her and her baby out of the building since they don't have enough money for rent.

She explains that she needs a job, but when she gets it, she'll find a better place. Walter explains that he'll fund her for another week until she gets her job so that she and the baby aren't in a place they don't like.

She thanks him and he goes to bed.
5. What does the old man in room 2 give to Walter?

Answer: A necklace

Later that night, Walter hears banging and chanting from downstairs. When he checks into the room occupied by the old man across from the manager's apartment, he finds the man banging his head on a table and saying cryptic phrases. The man says that he must have seen the rat by now and that the witch is hunting him. Walter is confused about this and believes the rat to be a dream.

The old man says that he came to the house like Walter did, as a young man, but the house is evil, and he has learned that in all his years there.

He also lived in the same room and had similar dreams before seeing the witch there. He prays to stop her from advancing. The old man pulls a necklace with a cross off his neck and gives it to Walter for protection, and he leaves with it.
6. How does Walter make extra money?

Answer: Marking papers

When Walter returns home the next day, Frankie stops him in the hall to ask if he'll babysit Danny while she goes to her job interview. He agrees, and when she leaves, he tells Danny that he likes Frankie and he notices the child wearing a similar cross around his neck.

He works at marking papers for a professor (for whatever money he can make) and he constantly drifts off to sleep. Soon, it gets dark outside, and the walls of the room begin making eerie colours. Soon, the witch emerges and Walter wakes up.

When the witch takes off her robe, she reveals herself to be Frankie and she seduces Walter. However, she soon reveals her true form and transforms into her decrepit, old self, tearing into his back with her fingernails. He wakes up soon after in his regular room, realizing Danny is back in Frankie's room.
7. What does Walter use to track his 'sleepwalking'?

Answer: Flour

When Walter realizes he's in the other room, he rushes back to find Danny behind a locked door. He tries to break it in until Frankie returns home and unlocks it. They find Danny alright inside. Walter explains he may have been sleepwalking, as his stuff is clearly where he dropped it in Frankie's room. He explains his bad dreams and suggests he carry flour to track where he walks. He soon notices that his back has been bleeding as well, as a result of the witch. Frankie suggests that he see a doctor.
Walter goes to bed, recovering his tracks and easing up on his bloody back, and reassures himself it's all just a dream.
He doesn't sleep for long though, because he finds a set of rat footprints leading under his bed. When he stares under it, a hand grasps out at him, and pulls him underneath.
8. When Walter is pulled under his bed, what does the witch tell him to do in the blank book?

Answer: Sign

Walter appears with the witch in front of an old table with a rather large empty tome. She opens up his hand and places a quill in it, telling him to sign. When he hesitates, the rat with the human face crawls onto his shoulder and down his arm, also telling him to sign the pages.

When he continues to not sign, the rat bites his arm near the wrist, causing him to bleed all over the book. Walter screams and wakes up in the university library in front of another large book. Flipping through the pages, he finds many mathematical calculations and pages outlining with trials, sacrifices, the witch herself, and the hideous rat creature.

He also finds pictures involving the sacrifice of a baby.
9. The book Walter finds himself reading in the university library is the Necronomicon.

Answer: True

When he continues reading, Walter realizes that Danny may be in danger. A librarian soon finds him in the restricted section of the library, which she claims is locked at all times. When she sees him reading the book, she tells him that no one has access to it, as it is the Necronomicon.

He gets up to leave and he discovers he's wearing what he went to bed in; his t-shirt and underwear. The librarian yells for security as he runs home. He immediately goes to see Frankie and tells her that Danny may be sacrificed to the devil by the witch.

When she realizes the wounds that he has, she tells him he needs to see a doctor or get medication, and he continues to tell her that she needs to take Danny away or else the witch will use him to kill her son.

She simply locks him out, and refuses to leave.
10. What does Walter use to kill the witch?

Answer: His gift from the old man in room 2

That night, Walter is visited by the man from room 2. Walter tells the old man he can stop the witch if he figures out how to close the membranes. The old man says that if Walter leaves, all will be alright as she needs a man to make the sacrifice. Walter realizes that the old man killed a child to escape the witch's wrath and that like him, was marked to be the murderer.
When the man leaves, Walter decides to take a hammer to the corner of his room, and he locks the manager out. Inside, he discovers a graveyard full of skeletons. He hears the rat inside and begins crawling to what seems like an exit, but he only finds another room. This room contains numerous books and alchemical tools as well as the bowl used for the sacrifice's blood. When Walter spies Danny caged in the corner, the witch pulls him aside and prepares for the sacrifice. Walter fights back though, and against the witch's powers, he is able to get the upper hand, binding her with his bare hands and strangling her with the cross necklace he received from the old man in room 2. He escapes with the baby, falling through the newly-formed hole in his roof.
Placing the baby on his bed, Walter sits down in a chair to rest, but soon discovers the rat with the human head biting Danny's neck. While he attempts to save the child, Frankie beats at the door (and watches the lights change to an eerie purple underneath it). The old man in room 2 continues to pray and beat his head on the table downstairs until he's bloodied. The manager of the hotel finally gets the cops over, and when they open the door, Danny is dead in Walter's arms as he cries hysterically.
In the end, Walter tries to explain his story in a mental institution. He is diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia. However, the CSIs have found the bodies in the ceiling and the knife in the attic, and unless one were to believe Walter's story, none of it makes sense. Some of the bodies were 300 years old.
While Walter remains in his padded cell, the planes open once more, and the rat attacks him in the night. His stomach is bitten into and he dies of blood loss. The doctors witness this and have no choice but to believe his story. The old man of room 2 takes down his crosses, and hangs himself, as the terror will never end.
Walter's room is back up for rent.
