Incident On and Off a Mountain Road Quiz

Answer: When she goes to change the radio station

The story starts off with Ellen driving on the mountain road. With no gas or services on the road for nearly seventy-five miles, she drives unhindered through the night. When she goes to change the radio station, she momentarily looks down to see what she's fumbling with.

However, when she looks back up, she finds herself face to face with another car, stopped on the road. She crashes into it head on. The scene flashes back to her on a date with a new guy. The man talks about the world being screwed up.

They talk about the meek inheriting the Earth, and the fact that no matter what there will always be problems with the way things are being run. Regardless, Ellen enjoys their date together.

Answer: Bruce

After their first date, it's evident that Bruce and Ellen got together again. The next flashback takes Ellen and Bruce to Bruce's cottage. When they get out of their car, there's a downpour, and the two kiss in the rain. They make their way into the cabin and make love.
Back to the present. Ellen wakes up slumped on the steering wheel of her car. She looks herself over for bruises before trying to start the car. It doesn't. She decides to take the flashlight out of her glove compartment and check the other car instead.
The other car's lights are on, the driver side door is open, but no one is inside. Ellen hears a scream from over the guardrail before finding a trail of blood in the car leading over the side of the road.

Answer: Her cell phone

When she looks over the guardrail, Ellen finds a shadowy figure emerging from the woods wearing a black hat and a trench coat. As it makes its way up the side of the hill, she asks them if they're okay. When it reaches the top, she shines the flashlight down to see that the figure is dragging the other driver along with him.

She screams for help before the figure leaps up and slashes his knife at Ellen. Ellen tosses her cell phone aside in the process before leaping over the side of the hill in fear.

As she's chased through the woods, she trips and hides behind a tree until the figure passes. During this time, she thinks back to her time with Bruce at the cabin.

Answer: A knife

In Ellen's flashback, Bruce tells her "you've always got to expect the unexpected...and do the unexpected." He leads her to a rope bridge and tells her to be as crazy as any person who acts crazy to her to fight back. With his survivalist methods, he tells her to use the woods to her advantage if anything ever happens.

She just has to make sure she gets the upper hand and surprise those who surprise her. When they rush to the top of a hill, he proposes to her. Back in the dark woods, Ellen takes those words to heart, emerges from her hiding spot, and flees the figure once more.

However she comes to a dead end and the figure catches up with her. He throws his knife at her, and it barely misses, so she dives under the brush and tries to crawl to the other side.

He manages to catch up with her, but she kicks him in the face and leaves him under the trees.

Answer: Scissors

While Ellen crawls through the brush, she finds the time to rig a trap involving some sticks and a small pair of scissors before continuing on. When the maniac wakes up, he falls for it, assuming that Ellen is harmless, and she manages to make an escape.

The scissors hit him directly in the eye. Ellen also finds a deep hole before falling into another flashback. This time, Bruce says "when all else fails you, try anything." This time, Bruce is giving Ellen gun training in the woods and it is evident that he is teaching her how to survive.

He also says "balance is everything; nature is balance." before showing her more weapons and methods. Ellen tells Bruce that she's getting freaked out. They got married, but she doesn't understand his ideas.

Although they have a cabin in the woods, he won't take them back to the city for fear of an uprising.

Answer: No

Ellen takes the time to cover the pit with leaves and place a thick stake inside to kill the maniac. Using piece of her dress as bait, and creating another snare trap with a rather sharp file, she goes into hiding. In anticipation, she watches and listens as the sounds of footsteps get closer.

She even yells for the maniac to try and find her, but she ends up luring the wrong person. The other driver walks out of the woods and falls into her pit trap, impaling her leg on the stake in the ground.

The maniac ends up behind Ellen, and although he triggers her spear trap, it misses, hitting Ellen in the shoulder. With all of her plans backfired, she runs away and leaves the maniac behind. He shushes the other girl while Ellen runs.

Answer: Next to a waterfall

Ellen makes her way through the forest until she finds a small clearing next to a cliff. To her shock, she finds numerous bodies hanging on crosses in the moonlight. The light shines through two holes in their heads where their eyes have been bored out. She finds her way to the door of the cottage, and looking over the side of the front balcony, she sees a drop to a waterfall.
Behind her, the maniac drags the body of the other driver with a grin on his white face. Ellen, in shock, faints.
While she's unconscious, she has another flashback, this time to Bruce calling her weak. When they return from a hike, he criticizes her and says that all of his work on her has meant nothing as she can't even survive on her own. They fight about their relationship before she takes his knife to attack him. She cuts him in anger and tells him that she's leaving him.

Answer: Moonface

Ellen wakes up in the basement of the maniac's cabin to find herself chained to a pole surrounded by corpses. A man loudly wakes up next to her. Evidently he's been there for a while as he's been around to see others killed. Ellen throws up while he talks.
The man says that the maniac removes the eyes of his victims because eyes show people bad things which they shouldn't see. He says that he has been calling the maniac 'Moonface' because his face is bright like the moon. He didn't like it though, because he thought it was an insult. He notes that he's probably far away by now, moving their cars miles away so no one will find them. Moonface comes home at that point and the man says his name is Buddy before he retreats into his hiding spot.
Moonface walks down and flicks a switch in the basement, starting many sirens and flashing lights. He ties up the other driver on a table and Ellen finds that she's still alive. Using a drill press, Moonface removes both of her eyes before placing her on a cross and positioning her on his cliffside.

Answer: By sending him off a waterfall

Buddy wakes up again when Moonface leaves and tries to help Ellen by cheering her on. Ellen uses her teeth to pull the sharp file out of her shoulder and she uses it to unlock her handcuffs and escape. Unfortunately, Moonface comes back downstairs and finds her, so he attacks her again.

She uses the file to fend him off and goes upstairs to find that the front door is barred shut. She kicks the knife away from him, and when he gets back up, she uses a nearby baby skeleton to hit him in the head.

She picks up his knife and forces him out the window over the waterfall. Although he grabs onto set of tattered curtains, it rips, and he falls off the cliff. Ellen finds a gun and a pair of boots and finds her way back to her car on the mountain road.

Answer: He was killed

Ellen makes her way back to her car and fixes it, allowing it to run. Watching her back, she walks around to the trunk and opens it to find the corpse of her husband, Bruce.
In her final flashback, Ellen recalls Bruce attacking her at the cabin. After throwing her against a mirror, Bruce proceeded to rape Ellen in rage, but she managed to do the unexpected and strangle him with his belt.
Ellen ends up taking Bruce back to Moonface's cabin, firing up the drill press, and making him into one final piece for Moonface's garden. She mentions that he's the newest member of 'the family' before saying that it was all his hard work and determination that got her out alive. On her way out, she uses her newly-acquired gun to kill Buddy, the only witness to the events.
She drives down the mountain road, and back to the city- her eyes the only ones to see the horrors that unfolded.
