Daytime Emmy winner Darnell Williams reprised his role of Jesse beginning on January 25th, 2008 when Jesse returned to his stomping ground at Pine Valley Hospital. He entered Frankie's room to see his son who had been treated for poisoning. Jesse simply looked on at his son before shortly departing after hearing noise.

Jesse got back in touch with Tad when the latter discovered him alive and in the flesh shortly after Jesse wound up back in Pine Valley. Jesse proclaimed one day he would depart town. Tad took Jesse to the train station so he could hitch a ride elsewhere while Krystal diverted Angie from the airport in order for her to bump into Jesse.

At the train station, Angie noticed Jesse on a train that had taken off and raced after it, yelling for him. Angie was distraught after the train left but then relieved after she noticed Jesse had gotten off it.

Jesse explained to Angie he survived the gunshot wound she thought took his life back in 1988 and was tortured in a separate room. The men who harmed him had orders from a criminal mastermind named Papel. He eventually came to town and was revealed to be none other than Rob Gardner, Ray's brother and Tad's uncle.

To try and lure Jesse into a trap, Papel (Rob Gardner) hatched a plan to kidnap his son, Frankie. When Papel's men attacked Frankie, Colby was also with him so both ended up being held captive. In the end, Frankie and Colby were freed after Rob made it appear like he caught Papel (he claimed his henchman was the actual culprit).

Jesse stated to Angie how Papel really wanted an expensive diamond which somehow ended up in a stuffed elephant toy he planned on giving Frankie when he was a young boy. Angie informed him she knew of the toy and was going to have it "buried" inside Jesse's "coffin".

At the last minute, she switched that toy with another stuffed elephant and gave it to her adoptive daughter, Cassandra. Shortly after this reveal, Cassandra ended up in Pine Valley.

Tad told Jesse he could keep him hidden inside his home's basement to prevent him from being harmed. Jesse accepted Tad's idea on remaining there until the coast was clear for him. Eventually, Tad told loved ones of Jesse having come back to town and residing at his home.

Jesse got a blast from his past later on in 2008 when his ex-girlfriend, Rebecca Fowler, came to Pine Valley. He broke the news to Angie that both he and Rebecca spent close time together while he was away and on the run from Papel. Despite their initial animosity, Angie and Rebecca eventually became civilized.

Rob Gardner showed up at Jesse and Angie's big day but Jesse confronted him with the truth about his being the man who nearly murdered him. Rob grabbed Angie and held her hostage. There was a big shootout in which Tad suffered a gunshot injury but luckily lived.
