Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the start of "Kill the Moon", Clara said the people of Earth would have a "terrible decision" to make. How long did they have to make it?

Answer: 45 minutes

As Clara was giving the speech, the clock was at 45 minutes, and she said 45 minutes in her speech. The terrible decision was whether or not to set off nuclear bombs on the moon, which would save the Earth but destroy a new and unique lifeform.
2. What sort of toy did the Doctor use in "Kill the Moon"?

Answer: Yo-yo

The Doctor pulled out a yo-yo to test the gravity on the Moon. It also came in handy saving Courtney and analyzing goo that was found on the Moon. The Doctor has frequently used a yo-yo over the years, especially the Fourth Doctor. Tom Baker's Doctor used his yo-yo in "The Ark in Space" (1975), "The Android Invasion" (1975) and "The Brain of Morbius" (1976), among others.
The Eleventh Doctor encountered a Rubik's cube twice. In "Night Terrors" he couldn't solve it, but in "The God Complex" he managed to solve it.
3. What kind of disaster did the Captain Lundvik tell the Doctor about?

Answer: Tsunami

As the Moon was breaking up, it created enormous tidal waves which killed millions of people on Earth. The astronauts were part of a last-ditch effort to stop the moon from breaking up using a museum-piece space shuttle and "third rate astronauts".
Captain Lundvik was played by Hermione Norris. She has been working in British television since 1990, and is probably best known for the dramedy "Cold Feet" (1998-2003) and the spy drama "MI-5" (2006-2009).
4. What country were the members of the mining survey team from?

Answer: Mexico

The mining team which came to the moon in 2039 was from Mexico. Captain Lundvik mentioned Mexico and there was a Mexican flag on the wall of the spaceship. The mining team came searching for minerals, only to discover there were none, because the moon was not made of rock, it was actually an enormous egg.
5. What kind of Earth creature did the monsters on the Moon look like?

Answer: Spiders

The monsters, which turned out to be super-sized bacteria, looked like bug-eyed spiders. There were a large number of webs around the Mexican spaceship, and some of the contained the crew members.
Spiders have a long history in "Doctor Who". The Third Doctor (Jon Pertwee) was forced to regenerate after fighting giant spiders in "Planet of the Spiders" (1974).
6. What were the names of the two astronauts who were attacked by the alien bacteria creatures?

Answer: Henry and Duke

Henry was the first one killed, when he stumbled across a nest of the creatures. Duke was attacked on the mining survey ship.
Henry was played by Phil Nice, and Duke was played by Tony Osoba. Nice has been acting in British television since 1984, and was in both "Hebburn" (2012-13) and "Citizen Khan" (2012-13).
Osoba has been acting since 1974. His first big break was in the 1970s drama "Porridge". This was actually his third appearance on "Doctor Who". Osoba was in "Destiny of the Daleks" with Tom Baker in 1979, and "Dragonfire" with Sylvester McCoy in 1987.
Despite two casualties, there was no appearance of Missy or the Nethersphere in "Kill the Moon".
7. In "Kill the Moon", what website was Courtney posting pictures of the Doctor and the TARDIS to?

Answer: Tumblr

It was Tumblr. Captain Lundvik recalled that her grandmother used to post pictures to Tumblr. The Doctor was a little freaked out that Courtney was posting pictures of him on the Internet; not surprising, considering that the Eleventh Doctor had gone to extraordinary lengths to erase most evidence of his existence from the world's databases.
Tumblr began in 2007 and grew incredibly rapidly. By 2014, it had reached over 200 million blogs and over 90 billion separate posts. It is incredibly popular with young people, so it was logical that Courtney would choose it for posting.
8. Clara said the Earth had to make a "terrible decision". What decision did the people of Earth make, to save the creature on the Moon or to destroy it?

Answer: destroy

Clara told the people of Earth to leave their lights on if they wanted to save the creature, and to turn them off if they wanted to use the nuclear weapons against the creature. The people of Earth turned off their lights.
9. Who stopped the atomic bombs from going off?

Answer: Clara

Clara was the one who stepped in at the last second and aborted the countdown. Immediately afterwards, the Doctor arrived and took Clara, Courtney and Lundvik to a beach (2500 miles from NASA) where they witnessed the birth of the Moon creature. The Doctor said the Moon creature inspires the people of Earth to return to space, and they eventually spread across the universe. At the end of the episode, Clara and the Doctor have a huge argument.

She is furious that he put her in the position of deciding the fate of the Earth, and Clara storms off the TARDIS. Best line: "I'll smack you so hard, you'll regenerate."
10. Who wrote "Kill the Moon"?

Answer: Peter Harness

This was Peter Harness' first script for "Doctor Who". He is probably best known for the Michael Caine film "Is Anybody There?" (2008). Harness has also written for the BBC series "Case Histories" and the Kenneth Branagh police drama "Wallander".
Paul Wilmhurst directed "Kill the Moon" as well as "Mummy on the Orient Express" and the 2014 Christmas Special. He has been working as a director since 1995.
Samuel Anderson returned (very, very briefly) as Danny Pink. Clara told Danny about her confrontation with the Doctor, and he was sympathetic. He mentions (in the last line of the episode) that he had "a very bad day". Since the Doctor specializes in helping people on "very bad days" this could foreshadow Danny finally traveling on the TARDIS.
Ashley Rowe was the director of cinematography for "Kill the Moon", She has done quite a lot of filming for BBC television since 1990, as well as feature films. Rowe did a lot of work on "Merlin" (2012) and "Atlantis" (2013).
