Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The episode opens with Judge Denise Grobman bleeding on the floor of a parking lot. When Detectives Briscoe and Green arrive at the scene and see a gun that belongs to the victim, they wonder why a judge in her area of law would need to carry a firearm, and Briscoe exclaims "maybe she hands out too much alimony". Where does Judge Grobman work?

Answer: Civil court

Mr. Grobman, an architect, is seen walking into his building when suddenly he and the doorman hear gunshots. They find Judge Grobman injured and unconscious on the parking lot and manage to see a black Jaguar hastily leaving before calling 911. The detectives find a gun at the crime scene that belongs to the judge and fired two rounds.

They also find blood both from the victim and from someone else, and cigarette butts that may or may not be related to the crime.
2. The detectives speak to a tenant in the building who saw a man smoking in the parking lot. He believes that he couldn't have wanted to steal Judge Grobman's car because if that's what the suspect wanted, he would've stolen the tenant's Mercedes. Why would it have been easy for a criminal to steal the luxury car?

Answer: The keys were left inside the ignition

At the hospital, Mr. Grobman tells the detectives that him and his wife were coming back from a trip to Sag Harbor but didn't notice anything out of the ordinary on their trip back home. The doctor believes that she will live but a kidney would need to be removed. Uniformed officers find a witness in the building who saw a man smoking near a fusebox in the parking lot.

He tells the detectives that he didn't look suspicious and probably didn't shoot Judge Grobman because if the goal was to steal a car, he would've taken the Mercedes that the tenant owns.

He explains to the detectives that he leaves the keys in the ignition because he was tired of spending time trying to remember where he placed them, leaving the detectives humorously startled.
3. The police still think that the stolen Jaguar is an important part of the crime and was "stolen to order". The Auto Theft Squad leads them to Matthew Carton, who they speak to outside of which of the following buildings?

Answer: Hospital

Lt. Van Buren, who appears for the first time in the episode, orders her detectives to consult with the Auto Theft Squad about suspects who might be connected to the shooting. They find two recent buyers of Jaguars that match the description and confirm their suspicions by looking at Dr. Matthew Carton's car serial number. Carton assures them that he didn't know the car he bought was stolen, and the only reason he purchased it is because he wanted a nice car but had thousands of dollars in medical school debt and couldn't afford a "decent car" any other way.
4. Carton's interrogation leads the detective to a used car salesman, who in turn points them to the person he got the Jaguar from. They enter Robert Ward's home and find a suspect unconscious but alive, next to a Visa card receipt. Lennie Briscoe looks at the receipt and says: "I love it when they're _________". Which word completes the sentence?

Answer: Stupid

When they burst into Ward's home with a search warrant, Briscoe and Green find a man whose ID says "Daniel K. Ward". They also find a visa receipt in the name of Arlene Pulaski, so Briscoe humorously tells Green: "I love it when they're stupid". Then, the police go into another home and aggressively search a man, later revealed to be Bobby Ward, finding weapons and cash on him.

Some of the bills have blood on them and when the detectives question Bobby about it, he says "bite me". Always witty, Briscoe tells Green "go ahead, bite him".
5. Briscoe and Green interrogate Bobby Ward at the precinct and conclude that someone wanted Judge Grobman dead. Green suggests that a possible motive is that Grobman recently accepted a position at the Department of Justice; which position is that?

Answer: Assistant Attorney General

Ward's lawyer quickly realizes there's not much room to negotiate with his client's crimes, so he offers to accept a charge of possession and sale of stolen property. Bobby tells the police that his cousin Danny wanted to steal the Jaguar by himself and that he accepted a low sum of money from the used car salesman since he had "something in the works" that would pay much more. Before they can ask Danny about the money, Lt. Van Buren informs the detectives that the suspect died at the hospital. The team now starts thinking about who might want Judge Grobman dead; after all, she was a judge for criminal cases before her move to civil court. Green also points out that the judge recently accepted a job at the federal Justice Department as Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights, which is one of the divisions within the department.
6. The detectives find out that the judge was a plaintiff in a civil action against Marlton, a company that is in which of the following industries?

Answer: Realty

Judge Grobman finally wakes up and is able to speak with the detectives. Before, they had spoken to her husband and asked if their relationship was good, given that someone had hired Danny to shoot and kill her. Both deny these suspicions and insist their marriage is healthy. The detectives ask why she was driving rather than Walter (her husband), and why he didn't go to the parking lot with her. The judge does not believe her husband could have any role in this attack.

Later, the detectives visit the judge's assistant, who tells them Judge Grobman is president of her housing cooperative board and sued their management company, Marlton Realty, years before. The assistant explains that Marlton was extorting contractors and that Greg Torino, the head of the company, does not have a good reputation.
7. The police arrest Mr. Grobman for attempted murder despite his claim that he doesn't know Danny Ward. At the first court appearance, A.D.A. Carmichael asks for the defendant to be remanded and post a bail of a million dollars to avoid jail, but the defense asks for Mr. Grobman to be "ROR". What does that acronym mean in the context of the law?

Answer: Released on your own recognizance

The police find a link between Danny Ward and Walter Grobman: Ward installed air conditioning and heating systems in a mall designed by Grobman. He becomes the main suspect of the investigation and is arrested despite Judge Grobman insisting her husband had nothing to do with it. In the courtroom, A.D.A. Carmichael has a hard time convincing the judge given that the victim herself signed an affidavit giving Mr. Grobman an alibi. Ms. Carmichael explains that they believe the man tried to kill his wife and it would be counterproductive to allow him to be near her. The judge sets bail at $25,000, meaning that Mr. Grobman would have to post this amount of money as a guarantee that he would appear for future court hearings. This is a little bit less permissive than the ROR the defense was asking for, which means that a defendant is released without posting any money with the only condition that they sign a document promising they would appear in court whenever they are asked to.

Judge Grobman is upset about her husband being accused and warns A.D.A. Carmichael that she would testify on his behalf if needed.
8. The prosecution is having trouble building a solid case, so they deepen their investigation by talking to friends and acquaintances of the Grobmans. A.D.A. Carmichael learns from Grobman's business partner that the Grobmans were building a new country house in which New York county, which contains Poughkeepsie and Beacon?

Answer: Dutchess County

Abbie Carmichael visits Grobman Architectural Associates and meets with Mr. Grobman's partner. He says he's breaking off the partnership because Walter refuses to accommodate client needs and instead pushes his own ideas onto them. He also says that Walter won a prestigious architecture prize at the beginning of his career but didn't quite live up to expectations, possibly overshadowed by his wife's success.

He then reveals a critical piece of information: the Grobmans bought 20 acres of land in Dutchess County, with the goal of designing a "dream house".

He gave up on the project, however, because of Denise's recent appointment at the Justice Department.
9. Judge Grobman refuses to believe her husband planned her murder, and files an application for a DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) at the hospital, indicating she does not want to be revived should something go wrong. According to her, what is the main reason she wants to die?

Answer: She is in constant pain

The District Attorney's team seems to morally disagree on whether filing a DNR (which amounts to a quasi-suicidal request) should be permissible. Carmichael believes "it's her life", but Mr. McCoy says "I'm not sure it should be up to her". They also have conflicting feelings regarding their own case: if the judge dies, it would be easier to convict Walter because her testimony wouldn't be a factor. Mr. Grobman knows this though and files a TRO (temporary restraining order) to block the DNR application and keep her alive. The judge of this case, Lisa Pongracic, is baffled by the fact that she now has three separate parties in her chambers: the prosecution, Mr. Grobman's attorney, and Mrs. Grobman's lawyer (who is there to defend her client's desire to file a DNR). The judge agrees to a videotape confession at the hospital, where Judge Grobman insists that Walter had nothing to do with her murder.

Judge Grobman's daughter does believe her father organized the shooting but says her mother will never admit it. She thinks that Denise won't admit it because she feels guilty about ignoring Walter's feelings of resentment. While she kept moving up and being successful, his career was not advancing. She agrees to sign an affidavit affirming her mother's depression is preventing her from making a rational decision.
10. Judge Pongracic rules that Denise is not competent of testifying in a win for the D.A.'s case. At the end of the episode, does Walter confess to his crime and go to jail?

Answer: Yes

To assess the witness' ability to stand trial and make rational decisions, Dr. Emil Skoda examines Judge Grobman. She tells him that she thinks it's rational to want to die in the condition she's in since she is in pain and will possibly be paraplegic for life. Skoda testifies that the judge is clinically depressed. Judge Grobman actually agrees in her own testimony, saying she is in constant pain and will never be able to live a normal life again. Mr. McCoy's cross-examination reveals that Judge Grobman is staying at her daughter's house instead of at her own home with her husband, but she denies this decision has anything to do with Walter. Mr. McCoy continues his tough line of questioning, repeating that Walter resented his wife for 25 years and she must've known this.

Judge Pongracic rules that Denise Grobman is not capable of testifying in this case, which is detrimental to Walter's defense since she was giving him an alibi. At the end of the episode, Mr. Grobman meets with Mr. McCoy, who harshly asks him why he didn't get a divorce and whether his ego was so hurt that she had to be killed. Under pressure, Grobman admits he arranged the shooting and pleads to attempted murder 1, which guarantees at least 25 years in prison. In exchange, the D.A.'s office will not stop Denise's DNR application and will not oppose parole for Walter when he applies in 25 years. Before the episode is over, D.A. Adam Schiff informs McCoy and Carmichael that Denise Grobman has passed away.
