Xiao Duo often refers Mei Niang to Lao Da. Mei Niang and Xu Ying Ying are best friends and sworn sisters. Xu Ying Ying was a poor, but friendly girl. She became very vicious and jealous of Mei Niang later in the story. Xia Duo was always the loyal buddy of Mei Niang throughout the entire series.

Mei Niang and Li Zhi first met on the broad streets of Li Zhou where the two accidentally bumped into each other on crowded streets. Li Zhi, now the new emperor of Tang, soon took Mei Niang back to the palace and then raised her concubine rank to Zhao Yi.

Because of Ying Ying's jealousy of the emperor's love towards Mei Niang, she choked her infant daughter to death with her own hands shortly after Empress Wang and Concubine Zhen left Mei Niang's palace. Mei Niang and the emperor both suspected it was either Empress Wang or Concubine Zhen who committed the crime. Soon Empress Wang was killed and Zhen Fei was sent to the Cold Palace and was not favored by the emperor for a period of time.
