Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In season 5 of the original "The Twilight Zone", the sun doesn't rise for one village in the episode "I Am the Night - Color Me Black". What scheduled event is connected to this occurrence?

Answer: An execution

A man has been found guilty of murder and is to be hanged, but there is still doubt about his involvement. In fact, several signs point to his innocence and no autopsy was ever done on the alleged victim. On the morning of the execution, the sky over the village is pitch black, yet, filled with hatred, the sheriff proceeds with the execution, to the applause of the villagers. Then, just hours later, the darkness spreads, engulfing many places of hate and injustice around the world...

2. "Lie to Me" was a television series that ran from 2009-2011. The episode "Black Friday" focused on establishing responsibility for a stampede at an electronics store that killed someone. Black Friday refers to which of the following?

Answer: Special sales after Thanksgiving

"Lie to Me" starring Tim Roth featured a team of experts in micro expressions who helped law enforcement agencies to determine who was lying and who was telling the truth. In the "Black Friday" episode, part of the team tried to establish who started a stampede as a store opened its doors for the special sales on the day after Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, the danger involved in Black Friday stampedes in the USA are not just an urban myth. Every year people queue up hours, or even days before to be the first through the doors. Record sales on Black Friday have been noted since 2005. Nearly every year since 2006, there have been multiple injuries and even deaths. In 2011 alone forty people were injured in two separate incidents at Walmart stores in different parts of the country.

3. What is the title of the BBC program (1969-1986) which helped turn the game of Snooker into one of the UK's most popular sports?

Answer: Pot Black

"Pot Black" came from the fertile imagination of David Attenborough, then the Director of BBC Two, when colour broadcasting was still in its infancy. The program is credited with turning a little known professional sport into a fun sport, played by a wide section of the population. The event was run annually until 1986, but there have been short seasons and "one-offs" at intervals.

Although all the matches were recorded in one day at the BBC's Birmingham studios, the matches were shown individually throughout the winter, with the co-operation of the Press, which did not reveal the winner till after the match was aired. The first century break was notched by Australian Eddie Charlton in 1973 with a break of 110. In 2006 Mark Williams broke the "Pot Black" record with a break of 119.

7. The events of 'The Curse of the Black Spot', a 2011 episode of 'Doctor Who', largely took place in what location?

Answer: A pirate ship

The title of 'The Curse of the Black Spot' is a play on that of the first film in the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' series - 'The Curse of the Black Pearl'. In the episode, the Doctor and his companions Amy Pond and Rory Williams landed on a 17th century pirate ship whose crew were being terrorised by a strange creature known as the Siren. Whenever a crew member suffered an injury, an example of the titular black spot was placed on their palm. This caused them to be drawn to the Siren and apparently disintegrated upon touching it. The idea of a black spot being a sign of impending death to pirates was first created by Robert Louis Stevenson in his book 'Treasure Island'.
