Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Perhaps one of the first believers in the island's sway of destiny, which survivor from the 815 crash became a spiritual leader for Jack Shepherd?

Answer: John Locke

Jack resisted the call of destiny almost to the end, when he finally became a dedicated believer. He and John clashed many times in a debate between faith and science. This even culminated in dividing the group of survivors into two camps at the beginning of the fourth season. Jack sought a way to get off the island, while John believed they were on the island for a reason. Before his death, he left Jack a note stating, "I wish you had believed me." Later, when the monster took John's form, Jack accused him of dishonoring his memory.
2. Jack Shepherd was destined to become a new protector of the island, but only for a short time and a particular purpose: to defeat the monster who threatened to destroy it. He almost lost his battle with the monster, but he succeeded with some help. Which character shot the monster in mortal form, enabling Jack to defeat it?

Answer: Kate Austen

Kate came with a troubled past and questionable ethics, but she was equipped to handle life on the island. Her father had taught her how to track, and she knew how to handle a gun. She became very close to Jack, even living with him off the island. She was scratched from the list of potential candidates to succeed Jacob when she took on the role of foster mother to Aaron Littleton but was later told she was still able to take the job if she wanted it.

The monster had taunted Kate earlier to not waste her bullets when he was invulnerable, but she 'saved him a bullet'.
3. Some might forget how others contributed and even gave their lives earlier in the story to bring everyone to their destiny. Which character was enlisted to protect the island by becoming a spy on a freighter owned by Charles Widmore?

Answer: Michael Dawson

Michael was separated from his son Walt for most of Walt's life. He was given custody of the child shortly before the crash. Thus much of life on the island was Michael adapting to being a father. Michael made a deal to get them both off the island, but he killed two people to do it. Racked with guilt, he attempted to commit suicide, but the island would not let him. Charles Widmore sent a team of mercenaries to capture Ben Linus, leader of the island's inhabitants.

He had earlier been evicted from the island, and now he was going to reclaim his role as leader by force.
4. The 'incident' which occurred in 1977 was a necessary step to later cause the crash of Oceanic Flight 815. While attempting to stop it, the characters actually made it happen, as suggested by Miles Straume. Who was the brains behind the idea to detonate the atomic bomb?

Answer: Daniel Faraday

While Daniel died before he saw the idea completed, he was able to explain it to Jack and the others who carried it out. Much of Daniel's expertise came from his background as a physicist. His true passion was the piano, but his mother, Eloise Hawking, forced his to pursue a career in physics.

She knew what his destiny was, having shot him in 1977 and later learning that he was her son. Daniel's knowledge was essential to understanding the time skips the group experienced that brought them to the past.
5. Many of the characters worked together to blow up the bomb, but the bomb did not explode on impact. Which character detonated it with a rock?

Answer: Juliet Burke

Juliet fell down the pit where the bomb had been dropped. Perhaps dying already, she spent her remaining energy to set it off. The explosion propelled the time displaced characters back to 2007. Dug out of the rubble, she died in the arms of James Ford whom she had been living with in the past. James had intended to propose to her and even had a ring.

However, by causing the 'incident', 815 would crash, bringing this particular group of people to the island with destinies to fulfill.
6. Which character stepped up to being the leader when the island kept skipping through time and protected the group by merging with the Dharma Initiative?

Answer: James 'Sawyer' Ford

Appearing as the villain earlier in the story, the troubled man came to terms with his past. His initial 'every man for himself' philosophy morphed into a protective demeanor toward the fellow survivors. While his style clashed with Jack's leadership, the two developed a respect for each other in the end. Even in his dealings after the bomb detonation, his strategies and negotiations with strategic players always included caring for the original survivors.
7. Which character 'saved the world' every 108 minutes until the survivors crashed the hatch?

Answer: Desmond Hume

Desmond had two defining characteristics that shaped his life and destiny: his love for Penny Widmore and his unique ability to cope with electro-magnetic forces. Through exposure to the electro-magnetic energy at the heart of the Swan Station, Desmond was able to travel back and fix his mistake with Penny. Eloise Hawking assured him that this was impossible.

His destiny was in the hatch. He was also fundamentally important in the defeat of the monster. He removed the cork at the heart of the island, making the monster mortal. Only his ability to live with forces allowed him to survive. Jack sent him home to finally have his happy ending with Penny.
8. As the characters sought to escape the island once more, they jumped into the submarine and attempted to leave. Which character sacrificed his/her life to save the others when a bomb was discovered on board?

Answer: Sayid Jarrah

Before grabbing the bomb and running away from candidates, Sayid told Jack that it would be him. Sayid was able to protect Jack, Kate, James, Hurley and Frank, allowing them to fulfill their destinies. He was unable to save Jin and Sun who died in the submarine, never able to see what the island held for them. Jin never met his daughter who was in the care of her grandmother. Previously Sayid had given in to the evil side of his existence and worked with the monster.

He found his redemption.
9. While something of a minor character, which character flew the plane off the island with the characters who had fulfilled their destinies and were returning home?

Answer: Frank Lapidus

Frank's character was not introduced until half way through the show, but his fate was always tied to Flight 815. He was originally slated to be the pilot. Instead his friend, Seth Norris, took the wheel of the plane. Seth was killed by the monster shortly after the crash. Frank was hired to be the helicopter pilot for the freighter, and fate would again play a role in his life by slating him as the pilot of Ajira Flight 316, which crashed on the nearby Hydra Island. Miles Straume also aided the take-off of the flight home by duct taping the repairs needed.
10. Jack Shepherd became the candidate that succeeded Jacob, but his term was short. Who succeeded Jack?

Answer: Hugo 'Hurley' Reyes

Hurley never claimed to be the smartest or most qualified of the candidates, but he had a gift. He was able to talk with those who had passed on. He was able to receive instructions from Jacob. After taking the role as island protector, he was unsure of what to do.

It was Ben Linus who advised him to run it as he wanted to, not as Jacob did. Hurley instantly offered the job of number two to Ben. In the end, they assured each other that they both did their jobs well.
