Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. To get into the MasterChef Kitchen, the semi-finalists had to make a single dish involving which protein?

Answer: Lamb

To get into the MasterChef Kitchen, a few dozen chefs gathered together for a major cookoff in which they had to choose any cut of lamb, take sixty minutes, and create a dish to wow the judges. Three of the chefs were eliminated midway through cooking their dishes while many others were not tasted at all.

A large group was sent directly into the finals while others went head-to-head. Ultimately, nineteen were chosen to compete, receiving their aprons.
2. The home cooks' first elimination test required the use of what difficult, expensive ingredient?

Answer: Langoustine

After the nineteen finalists visited the MasterChef Kitchen for the first time and battled it out in the first Mystery Box challenge-- consisting of a potato, a tomato, a few strips of bacon, and a handful of chocolate (and their Pantry Box)-- to gain a major advantage in the next Elimination Test. Natasha won with a technical dessert and got to choose the refined ingredient for the next task-- she chose langoustine.

In addition, she would not need to cook this dish. In addition she could save another person from having to cook; she chose Savannah.

In the end, Sasha Fox was sent home on a horrible dish of Langoustine and Cheese Grits. When asked by Joe Bastianich "I give you $50 worth of langoustine; what is it worth now?", she responded "...with the grits, about $55."
3. In a "MasterChef" first, four of the home cooks traveled to what city in an extended Pressure Test?

Answer: Las Vegas

Heading into the show's second Pressure Test, part of a losing team was forced to battle it out making Eggs Benedict. While some did fine, four of the chefs failed to work to the judges' expectations. What resulted was a trip to Las Vegas for an extended Pressure Test. Beth and Natasha and Kathy and Luca split into two teams to create and serve burgers at Gordon Ramsay's own restaurant, BurGR. Natasha and Beth won, sending their opponents to a final Pressure Test round in which Luca and Kathy had to make Butter-Poached Lobster. Though both showed excellent skill, the judges felt that Luca was the winner, and he was spared.
4. What kind of pasta was created by Lidia Bastianich prior to a challenge for the final fifteen?

Answer: Agnolotti

After a very difficult Mystery Box challenge involving obscure, exotic foods from all around the world (including elk meat, salt-cured tuna, Okinawa sweet potatoes, cod liver, and ground moss), the home cooks were given the chance to receive a pasta-making lesson from none other than Joe's mom, famous chef Lidia Bastianich. Since Eddie won the challenge, he chose for the other chefs to make agnolotti, a stuffed pasta, and he also had the ability to prevent James and Lynn from watching the lesson.

They managed to pull through, however, and Howard was sent home.
5. The final thirteen home cooks were surprised by a visit from which former "MasterChef" winner, who asked them to cook blind?

Answer: Christine Ha

After a Mystery Box Challenge involving the different parts of a pig's head (won by Lynn), the home cooks were given a unique Elimination Test in which legally-blind season three winner Christine Ha stopped by for a visit. Lynn chose the ingredient used by the other home cooks-- live Dungeness crab (though Krissi was stuck using catfish)-- while Christine asked the cooks to perform the challenge blindfolded.

This was determined to be a cruel joke. James and Natasha had the best dishes overall while Beth was sent home on the back of her poor, virtually-raw crab meal.
6. During the macaron Pressure Test, one of the major requirements of the challenge was which of the following?

Answer: Fitting twelve into a small box

After a Team Challenge in which the home cooks were asked to cater a wedding, one team emerged victorious and the other had to face the Pressure Test. The judges narrowed the field down to two, sending several members of the team to safety and pitting Jonny and Lynn against one another to make a single dozen macarons, fitting them into a single box to present to the judges. Jonny was eliminated, despite having better macarons, because he decided to frustratedly shove the dozen into the box, even though they didn't completely fit (while Lynn placed two of his on top). Because of this loss of temper, they sent him home instead.
7. Excluding one in which they were not allowed to participate by default, which home cook never won a Team Challenge?

Answer: Krissi

Because Krissi was on the losing team for every Team Challenge she was inevitably eligible for every Pressure Test. In some cases, Krissi was asked to sit out the challenges or she was saved as team captain, but she did compete in more Pressure Tests than any other contestant.

She was ultimately eliminated on the back of an extremely-difficult Pressure Test against Jessie, the last one of the season. The two of them had to make a chocolate mousse, a chocolate souffle, and a molten chocolate lava cake.
8. In one episode, an eliminated home cook returned to the competition. Who succeeded in this task?

Answer: Bri

Bri, who was eliminated on the back of a chocolate eclair Pressure Test a few episodes earlier, was given the chance to face off against Bime and Lynn in two challenges, the first being a Pressure Test involving sunny-side-up eggs (in which she cooked thirteen perfectly to Bime's nine and Lynn's eight) and the second being a blind tasting in which they had to filet and serve Alaskan king salmon dishes for Joe and the other six home cooks.

They voted Bri back in with four votes over Bime's three. Bri lasted another several episodes, placing sixth overall.
9. The final five, during a challenge on a ranch, needed to cook different meals for a luncheon hosted by what famous chef?

Answer: Paula Deen

After an extremely difficult Elimination Test for the final five home cooks, the judges were unable to send anyone home so all five proceeded into the next challenge at Paula Deen's ranch. The five of them each had to create a meal for a charity luncheon and each would be working with a different protein (pork chops, alligator, catfish, shrimp, and chicken). Jessie and Luca won the task, sending the other three to a Pressure Test involving highly-technical foods originally made by the three judges.

The challenge got James sent home over a difficult panna cotta.
10. Which home cook became the winner of "MasterChef" season four?

Answer: Luca

In the final cook-off, Luca and Natasha had to face off in three courses, each with an hour prep time. For the appetizer course, Natasha made Pan-Seared Scallops and Seafood Salad while Luca made Pan-Seared Duck Liver. For the entree course, Natasha made Five-Spice Monkfish and Luca made Tamarind and Balsamic-Glazed Beef Short Ribs. For dessert, both cooks made pannacottas; Natasha planned to make one coconut and one lime (but tossed the lime midway through) while Luca's was a basil one. After deliberations, the judges chose Luca to be the winner of season four of "MasterChef".

He won the trophy, the cookbook deal, and the $250,000 prize.
