Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This drama featured music by Jan Hammer, Phil Collins, Chaka Khan, Glenn Frye, Don Henley, Sheena Easton, Mitch Ryder, James Brown, and Tina Turner, just to name a few. And that's right, I did say it was a drama, not a variety or musical show. It was produced by Michael Mann and was on NBC in the 80's. The name of the show is?

Answer: Miami Vice

Who could forget Crockett and Tubbs on 'Miami Vice'? Picture Sonny Crockett (aka Sonny Burnett,) who was played by Don Johnson, and Ricardo Tubbs (aka Rico Cooper), played by Philip Michael Thomas, in their tight white linen pants and pastel shirts. With Jan Hammer's theme song in the background, those Metro Dade detectives rode around southern Florida in a Ferrari or on their power boat when they weren't lounging on Crockett's sailboat with his alligator, Elvis.

The show broke records, made records and set standards for future TV shows.
2. Imagine a man who looked like he stuck his finger in light socket, a giant rat, and a petite, squeaky girl all trying to teach you something. At first you might think it was just for kids, but it wasn't. They made learning science fun and interesting, and conducted experiments that could be done at home. What in the world was the name of this show?

Answer: Beakman's World

Paul Zaloom played Beakman and, occasionally, the renowned Professor I. M. Boring. Lester, the giant lab rat, was played by Mark Ritts. This half hour show started out on TLC and moved to CBS to run for a total of four seasons. Beckman read questions from viewers, appeared as famous scientist guests, performed experiments and explained how things worked.

At the beginning and end of the show, penguins watched their TV from the South Pole and commented on how things were going on the show. A half hour just went by way too fast.
3. Ok, think animated animal friends from the '50s and '60s. Now add the fact that it was a cartoon for kids but the puns, satire, and double entendres had adults watching too. Now think about a machine that took you back in time to relive historic events or retold fables and fairy tales with a modern twist. What show were those animated buddies on?

Answer: The Rocky And Bullwinkle Show

Originals of 'Rocky and His Friends' and 'The Bullwinkle Show' ran until 1964. Rocket J. Squirrel and Bullwinkle J. Moose were great friends from Frostbite Falls who went head to head with villains Boris Badenov and Natasha Fatale. And as if they weren't enough to make you giggle, there was always the shows within the show.

For example there was 'Fractured Fairy Tales' and 'Aesop and Son', or 'Mr. Know-It-All', starring Bullwinkle. Then there were characters like Mr. Peabody (a dog) and his pet boy, Sherman, operating the Wayback Machine. Even though the animation was criticized, the words that were spoken were so cutting edge as to make this show remain popular for many years.
4. This game show premiered as a daytime show and a nighttime show on the same day in 1987. There were two opposing teams, a speed round, and it would eventually become a popular home game. Put down the marker and give me the name of the show.

Answer: Win, Lose, Or Draw

Each 'Win, Lose, Or Draw' team was made up of one guest and one celebrity. They took turns drawing pictures to represent a word or phrase for their team mate to guess. If they couldn't guess the answer, the opposing team got a chance. In the speed round, they had 90 seconds to draw and guess as many words as possible. Burt Reynolds and Bert Convy owned the production company and were hosts and guests from time to time. With only an easel, a marker, and some predetermined words or phrases, this was an easy game to play at home or during a party. Eventually, a board game and a video game were produced.
5. CBS ran this western from 1965 to 1969. It was fast paced, clever, and seemed to be written more in the style of Jules Verne rather than Zane Grey. Two agents traveled the U.S. on a train at the behest of President Ulysses S. Grant. Look in any direction to find the answer and tell me, what was the name of this way out western?

Answer: The Wild, Wild West

On 'Wild, Wild, West', James West (Robert Conrad) and Artemus Gordon (Ross Martin) played Secret Service agents in one of the most fun westerns ever aired. Each week there was an over-the-top villain to look forward to, and even more over-the-top gadgets used to subdue them. 'Q' from the 'James Bond' movies would have been proud to work with these guys. Dr. Miguelito Quixote Loveless was probably the most infamous villain on the show and even though he was small in stature (he was a dwarf), he was a huge threat. And personally, I will never quite forget Jim West in his leather pants, which he apparently split on occasions.
6. A comedy, a parody, a nighttime soap opera - no matter what you called it, it was original, ahead of its time and hilarious most of the time. This show was on ABC from 1977 to 1981. It dealt with subjects that up until then had not been discussed on TV. What was the name of this nighttime soap?

Answer: Soap

There were a lot of cast members on 'Soap', including three that came from popular daytime soap operas. Some cast members that you might remember were Billy Crystal, Robert Urich, Katherine Helmond, Richard Mulligan, and Robert Guillaume. The show was about a working class family named Campbell and a wealthy family named Tate.

It dealt with subjects like rape, homosexuality, incest, harassment, race, and many other taboo subjects by being way over the top. The show's producers actually made light of all the controversy and used it to entice viewers.
7. This action-adventure show originated in Canada and was based on a French film. There was also a U.S. version of the film. The TV show ran in the U.S. from 1997 to 2001 on the USA network. The main character of the show was a female. Tell me the name of this show, s'il vous plaît.

Answer: La Femme Nikita

Peta Wilson played Nikita, a kid convicted of killing a policeman and sentenced to life in prison. Her death was faked and she was taken to a secret facility where she was recruited to work for the government. She was trained to be an assassin for Section One, a group that believed the ends justified the means, the not-so-good good guys.

This was a show about spies and counter terrorism. Michael (Roy Dupuis) was Nikita's trainer and romantic interest for the first four seasons. He reappeared occasionally in the fifth season.

The show didn't have a big budget so they depended on good writing to keep their audience interested.
8. Canada was responsible for the production of this horror show. It was on TV from 1992 to 1996 and eventually migrated to the U.S. It was about an 800+ year old vampire with a conscience. His 'maker', the one that turned him, was the villain of the show. We don't have all night for you to decide what the name of this show was.

Answer: Forever Knight

'Forever Knight' starred Geraint Wyn Davies as Toronto police detective Nick Knight. His partner for the first two seasons was Detective Donald Schanke, played by John Kapelos. And for the piece de resistance, there was Nigel Bennett as Lucien LaCroix, the vampire of all vampires.

He was excellently evil. Nick convinced his bosses that he had a skin condition that prevented him from being exposed to sunlight. He was able to use mind control on most people when necessary. He needed blood but kept his in wine bottles in his fridge.

He used his vampire powers and associates to clean up the streets of Canada.
9. It's 1966, you just turned the TV to ABC and you're ready to watch an action war drama. You liked the four guys that were regulars each week. You even kind of liked the enemy that made an appearance each week. You could always count on some wild action, jeep chases, guns and bombs and friendly banter. A little mouse told me you really liked this show, so what was its name?

Answer: The Rat Patrol

'The Rat Patrol' was on for two seasons. Christopher George played the unit leader, Sam Troy. You'd recognize him as he always wore an Australian bush hat. His wheel man learned to drive transporting moonshine in the hills of Kentucky. And then there was the bubble gum-chewing Ivy Leager. That rounded out the Americans but there was also a Brit, who was a desert expert.

The four Allies rode through the desert in a couple of jeeps with machine guns mounted on them. They were part of the North Africa campaign, fighting against Field Marshal Rommel and his troops during World War II.
10. This comedy and musical show debuted in 1975. The format from week to week was basically the same. There was a core of 'regulars', at least one 'big name star', and a popular musical group or singer. OBTW (oh, by the way), the show continued to air well into the 21st century; can you name it?

Answer: Saturday Night Live (SNL)

'Live from New York, it's Saturday Night!'. Think back to the days when the 'Not Ready For Prime Time Players' included Dan Aykroyd, Gilda Radner, John Belushi, Laraine Newman, Chevy Chase, Jane Curtin, Bill Murray and Garrett Morris. Do you remember 'Landsharks', 'Bass-O-Matic', 'The Greek Restaurant' (cheeseburger, cheeseburger, cheeseburger), 'Coneheads', 'Weekend Update', 'The French Chef' (Julia Child)? Those were just a few of the classic sketches. And who can forget the guest appearances by the Blues Brothers, or when John Belushi did his impression of Joe Cocker while Joe Cocker was singing, or when three of four Beatles were guest musicians. And then there were guest hosts like Steve Martin, Buck Henry, Christopher Walken, and Alec Baldwin. Ah, the good old days!
