Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. To begin this all-star season of the race, teams flew to what South American nation containing Mirador Cotopaxi?

Answer: Ecuador

Departing from the starting line as eleven teams in Miami, everyone headed out on the first leg of the race and flew to Quito, the capital city of Ecuador, to get a clue at Plaza de San Francisco and a departure time at Pim's Restaurant where they would spend the night. Beginning the next day, teams needed to drive to the nearby Cotopaxi National Park to find their Detour task and Pit Stop overlooking the fields below the active volcano. John Vito and Jill met their end here by accidentally entering the park through the wrong entrance.
2. The second and third legs of the race sent teams to Chile. After visiting a copper pit mine, teams headed to the Pit Stop in what Chilean desert?

Answer: Atacama Desert

Flying to Santiago, Chile in Leg 2, teams had to decipher their next location at a Road Block task, then fly to Calama to visit the Chuquicamata open pit copper mine for their Detour. Checking in at the Pit Stop in San Pedro de Atacama (at the Valle de la Muerte), a footrace brought Charla and Mirna and David and Mary in just before Kevin and Drew.

When teams left the Pit Stop twelve hours later, they were told to fly to the southern end of the country, specifically the Los Lagos Region.
3. The fourth leg of the race took teams to the southernmost reaches of South America. In Punta Arenas, teams needed to visit the statue of what famed explorer?

Answer: Ferdinand Magellan

Heading from the south of Chile to the further south of Argentina, teams completed a series of tasks at the literal 'end of the world', the southernmost points of the Americas. In Punta Arenas, Chile, teams had to complete one of two Magellan-themed tasks for the Detour (one of which was in front of the Magellan statue).

After these tasks, teams flew once more, this time to Ushuaia where they stopped at one of the world's southernmost post offices and raced on foot across Isla Redonda. In a major upset, Rob and Amber were the last to reach the Pit Stop and were eliminated.
4. Leg 5 sent teams from South America to what city, the capital of Mozambique?

Answer: Maputo

Completing a task on an Argentinean glacier, teams ended up needing to hitch a ride to Maputo, Mozambique, thousands of miles away on the east coast of Africa. Here, teams stopped at a rat training field where they had to use a leashed rat to find a deactivated landmine, they had to find the Praça dos Trabalhadores near Maputo's train station, and completed a Detour in one of the city's several markets before checking in at the Pit Stop in front of the Fortaleza de Maputo.

Here, Charla and Mirna won their first leg of the race.
5. Heading out from Mozambique in Leg 6, teams ended up riding which of these from Tanzania to Zanzibar?

Answer: Dhow

Leaving Maputo in Leg 5, teams had to fly to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, then hitch a ride on a dhow boat departing from an Indian Ocean harbor to take them to Zanzibar City. Here, teams completed a Detour involving either physical labour (schlepping logs) or mental strain (a difficult puzzle) before visiting a traditional Maasai village for their Road Block and checking in at the Pit Stop in Stone Town.

Here, Teri and Ian were eliminated after arriving too late in the day; because of awkward flights and departure times, team arrivals were spread throughout the day.
6. In Leg 7, teams completed which half of the Detour at Prymas Palace in Warsaw, Poland?

Answer: 'Perfect Pitch'

In what was certainly a disjointed leg of the race, the remaining six teams were split up by almost half a day's distance flying from Tanzania to Warsaw, Poland due to connection difficulties for the back teams leaving Africa. As such, the tasks completed in the Polish capital city were one at two times.

After visiting Czapski Palace, teams located a Detour taking them to either a medical lab to perform x-rays (a la Marie Curie) or to Prymas Palace (a la Frederic Chopin) to locate a grand piano on which they would need to properly tune one off key to complete the task.

This seventh leg ended as a non-elimination leg at Łazienki Palace.
7. In Leg 8, teams were asked to light a candle at Auschwitz Concentration Camp before encountering what race mechanic?

Answer: Intersection

A bus trip from Warsaw to Auschwitz-Birkenau, Poland brought the teams back to a more reasonably-level playing field in Leg 8 as teams made their way through the country in the nighttime. After stopping in front of Auschwitz, teams took a taxi to the Juliusz Słowacki Theatre in Krakow to find an Intersection where Oswald and Danny and Uchenna and Joyce teamed up for the Fast Forward (which both won) and the remaining teams battled it out during a Detour task involving kielbasa.

At the end of the leg, teams checked into the Pit Stop at Pieskowa Skała Castle and Joe and Bill were eliminated.
8. Leg 9 began with a stop at the Batu Caves in which Asian nation?

Answer: Malaysia

Teams flew from the city of Krakow all the way to Kuala Lampur, Malaysia where they had to ascend the steps leading to the Batu Caves to find their next clue box. While in Malaysia, Dustin and Kandice yielded Eric and Danielle shortly before the Detour.

While this kept the beauty queens in first place (their second victory of the race), Eric and Danielle still placed third. All of the teams completed their tasks in Malyasia before Uchenna and Joyce's plane even landed in the city. They headed to the Pit Stop at Carcosa Seri Negara and were eliminated.
9. Arriving at the Macau Tower in Leg 11, teams proceeded to do what from the observation deck?

Answer: Jump off

After completing one leg of the race in Hong Kong, teams took a ferry over to the island of Macau in Leg 12 to find a Road Block clue (and a Yield, promptly used by Oswald and Danny against Eric and Danielle) forcing one member to perform one lap around the outer observation deck of the Macau Tower before plunging off the top in one of the tallest SkyJumps in the world.

After this task, teams completed a Detour in the city before checking in at Trilho da Taipa Pequena 2000 Park of the final (of four non-elimination legs).
10. At the Old San Francisco Mint, during the final leg of the race, what team obtained an advantage which won them the race?

Answer: Eric and Danielle

In the final two legs of the race, teams flew from Macau to Guam to Hawaii to San Francisco, their final destination. Heading to the Old Mint in San Francisco for their final task, one member of each team was locked into a vault to create a four number combination by answering questions about other teams and using numbers associated with them as a code.

The second member was then locked into the vault in order to guess the code with the same answers; after ten minutes they would be let out to receive their clue. Danielle was the only person to crack the code, only minutes before the other teams finished the task.

She and Eric narrowly outraced the other two teams to the San Francisco Botanical Garden to become the winners of "The Amazing Race All-Stars".
