The man was a member of a drug cartel who rescued her from her pimp. She was from Mexico and he was from Texas. After beating up her boss, he took her in with the rest of the people he was with that night.

Braga took on the role for the American version of the show. The show is based on a book from author Arturo Perez-Reverte called "La Reina del Sur". There was also a telenovela called by the same name that adapted the book.

Kate del Castillo played Teresa in the Spanish language version.

The show opened in the future (compared to the rest of the episode). Teresa was standing in front of a large picture window. The voice over explained that she ran the largest drug empire in the western hemisphere.
