Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How many Merries are now living in Sherwood forest, excluding Marian?

Answer: 6

It's Robin Hood (Robert of Huntington), Little John, Will Scarlet, Much, Nasir and Brother Tuck.
2. In the beginning of the episode, we see Robert and his men rescuing some guys. One of the men they saved from being killed kneels in front of Robert and thanks him. It's the first time someone calls him Robin Hood.

Answer: true

In the first episode of the third season, "Herne's Son (Part 1)", there's already the first change of name from Robert of Huntington to Robert of Sherwood. Now he becomes Robin Hood.
3. Who wrote this episode according to the opening credits?

Answer: Richard "Kip" Carpenter

Richard "Kip" Carpenter even invented and developed the whole series. He also wrote Catweazle. Anthony Horowitz, the second main writer of the series, wrote the episodes "The Inheritance", "Cromm Cruac", "Adam Bell", "The Pretender" and "The Sheriff of Nottingham".
4. Who is "The King's Devil"?

Answer: a torturer

Marian has sent for Robert to warn him that the Sheriff has a plan which could unmask him. She heard that from her servant who has a brother who works in Nottingham Castle.
5. Apart from warning Robert, Marian has another reason why she wants to see him. Which one?

Answer: She wants to give him Albion.

Marian tells Robert that he's Robin's successor, Herne's son. But Robert doesn't take the sword, not yet. He says: "I can't accept it. One day perhaps, when I'm worth it."
6. Why can't Marian join the Merries?

Answer: Her father gave his word when she was pardoned.

Robert tells her he doesn't understand why she wouldn't go back to Sherwood, because he knows that her pardon was bought. But she replies: "Do you blame him? I'm his only child!"
7. Who is convinced that Robert of Huntington is the new Robin Hood?

Answer: Sir Guy of Gisburne

The Sheriff isn't sure enough and doesn't want to accuse the son of one of the most powerful men in England to be Robin Hood, because, according to him, he and Gisburne wouldn't have time to pack their bags if they were proved wrong. But the Sheriff hasn't completely ignored Gisburne's suspicions and has sent a spy to watch Marian.
8. What's the name of the man the Sheriff has sent in order to watch Marian because he thinks she may meet with one of the outlaws?

Answer: Oliver

He has sent Oliver to Leaford Grange because he "knows where her heart lies".
9. When Marian takes a look at Albion, she sees something written in Celtic on it. What does the inscription say?

Answer: Herne's son is my master. I cannot slay him.

Later in the episode, the inscription turns out to be true: Gisburne tries to hit Robert with Albion, but then isn't even able to hold the sword.
10. When Robert and the Merries fight the torturer and his guards, a poisoned arrow hits Robert. But where?

Answer: in his left leg, above the knee

Unfortunately, the torturer himself manages to escape into the woods. Meanwhile, Nasir is taking the arrow out of Robert's leg and finds out that the arrow's poisoned.
11. Where do the Merries Robert take to?

Answer: Wickham

Though they know "it's all risks", they have no other choice than take him to Wickham, where they hope an old mad lady who earlier helped Much when he had toothache could treat Robert.
12. After they found out that the old lady who could have helped Robert is dead, they come to the conclusion that they need Marian. Who goes off to fetch her?

Answer: Much

When Much arrives at Marian's, she already knows that Robert is wounded, because she had seen it in a vision she's had earlier when she touched Albion.
13. The spy who was sent to Leaford to keep an eye on Marian followed her and the Merry (who came to fetch her) into Sherwood. A few minutes later he is dead. How did he die?

Answer: He fell off a bridge into a river and broke his neck.

So now they are in trouble, because they've just found out that Oliver is one of the Sheriff's men. And they know that the Sheriff would look for him if he wouldn't return to Nottingham.
14. The people of Wickham and the Merries decide to bury the spy deep in Sherwood. But why does Edward of Wickham want to bury him before it's getting dark?

Answer: In the dark, it would be bad luck for the spy.

Back then, the people believed in things like witches, spirits, demons and rites, and according to Edward, it would be bad luck for Oliver to be buried after dark because it "depends where he's going".
15. When Marian's sitting at Robert's sickbed, the following conversation is taking place: Marian: "They're saying you're Robin Hood." Robert: "In the villages, yes." Marian: "And in Nottingham." Robert: "I never wanted it to happen." Marian: "It's only a name. Robert or Robin, it doesn't matter." What is Robert's answer?

Answer: "It matters to you."

In this very moving scene, Robert learns that it's still very hard for Marian and that she still has not gotten over her husband's tragic death.
16. Who finally heals Robert?

Answer: Herne

The Merries have taken Robert back into Sherwood, where Herne sends them away to take care of him on his own.
17. The Sheriff has taken Marian to Nottingham because he wants to know - from her own lips - who Robin's successor is. So Robert visits Nottingham, too, not as Robin Hood but as Robert of Huntington. To the Sheriff's surprise, he suggests doing what with Marian?

Answer: take her to the dungeons

When she refused to give away the name of her dead husband's successor, he went on with his show and suggested to keep her imprisoned, which should "bring her to her senses and loosen her tongue".
18. Robert convinces the Sheriff to take the prisoners to Newark. Of course, Robin's men are waiting there to ambush the trek. So the Merries take Robert hostage and in exchange for him, all the prisoners are released by the Sheriff of Nottingham.

Answer: true

Of course the Sheriff isn't happy about what happened, but he fears the Earl's revenge if Robert would be harmed or even killed. "The Earl would have skinned me alive."
19. After Robert's identity was blown, he had to defend himself in a swordfight with Guy of Gisburne. In the fight Guy loses his sword and grabs another one from the table. It turns out to be Albion, which the Sheriff had taken with him from Leaford.

Answer: true

But Albion only serves Herne's son, and so Gisburne drops it. Robin gets the sword and manages to escape into Sherwood.
20. At the end of the episode, the Merries meet Herne the Hunter, who says: "To help the weak, defend the helpless and fight against tyranny. Robin in a hood, so must it be!" What's the Merries' reply?

Answer: "So must it be!"

They are all kneeling down in front of Herne, bowing their heads and repeating his last words. So must it be.
