"Robin Hood and the Sorcerer" Trivia Quiz

The first episode of the BBC series "Robin of Sherwood" is "Robin Hood and the Sorcerer". This episode was later divided into two parts. For quiz purposes, I'm treating it as one.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Robin Hood and the Sorcerer" begins with what event?

Answer: Loxley being attacked

As a boy, Robin loses his home and his father Ailric to the Sheriff. Instead of rushing in on horseback, soldiers slowly approach on rafts, adding a different sort of menace: though the men are slow to arrive, the inhabitants know the men cannot be stopped when they land.

After Loxley is burned, Robin then lives with the miller, whose young son Much becomes a brother to him, though he continues to call himself Robin of Loxley.
2. Why are Robin and Much arrested in "Robin Hood at the Sorcerer"?

Answer: Poaching the King's deer

Many Robin Hood stories have a similar event. In the dungeon, they meet Will Scarlet, who joins them in Sherwood after their escape. Two other men, Tom and Dickon, also join them but are killed at the end of the episode. Writer Richard Carpenter later regretted killing them off because he liked them so much.

The dungeon has an eternal lodger, an old man who won't escape with the others because he can't leave his pet rat, Arthur.
3. In "Robin Hood and the Sorcerer", who calls on Robin to act for him?

Answer: Herne the Hunter

Robin meets an older man wearing fur and a giant stag head who calls on him to help the poor. Interestingly, the man himself is not the god Herne the Hunter. He is an ordinary man who, when possessed by "the Horned One", puts on the deer head and fur robe to become Herne. He sends Robin, and occasionally other members of his gang, visions and signs. He's even wounded in one episode.

Herne would probably have been unknown to people in medieval England, as the first written account of him comes from Shakespeare's "The Merry Wives of Windsor". They would have been more familiar with the Celtic god Cernunnos, a horned deity often associated with nature.
4. What is the name of Robin of Loxley's sword?

Answer: Albion

Albion is an old name for England or Great Britain, so it's a fitting name for a sword wielded by an English mythical hero. Herne refers to it as one of the swords of Wayland, the others of which appear in later episodes. The three incorrect answers are also fictional swords. Sikanda is a sword made of light and given to Bastian when he enters Fantastica in "The Neverending Story". Dyrnwyn is Prince Gwydion's sword in the children's series "The Chronicles of Prydain" and also appears in Celtic mythology. Gram comes from Norse mythology, particularly the "Volsunga Saga", where is it placed in a tree by Odin, drawn by Sigmund, shattered, and reforged by Sigurd.
5. In "Robin Hood at the Sorcerer", which member of Robin Hood's gang is introduced while under a spell?

Answer: Little John

Belleme, the sorcerer of the title, bewitches John and sends him to kill Robin. John meets Robin on a river with a quarterstaff, supplying this series' version of the legendary fight. While appearing in one episode, Allan does not join the group, as the production team felt that the actor's performance was not good enough for him to join the main cast.
6. How do Robin and Marion meet in "Robin Hood and the Sorcerer"?

Answer: He hides in her room while running from Gisbourne.

He runs into her room while she's in bed, but she doesn't cry out because she senses that Guy will kill Robin if he finds him. The two are immediately taken with one another.

The staircase outside Marion's room resides in Wells Cathedral. Apparently it was so stunning that the production team shot there twice, for it appears in a separate location, an abbey, in "The Swords of Wayland". I can't say I blame them for using it twice, as it is a unique and beautiful staircase.
7. What is the reward for winning the archery contest in "Robin Hood and the Sorcerer"?

Answer: A silver arrow

The silver arrow is the same that the Sheriff kills Robin's father to obtain early in the episode. Robin disguises himself as an old man to compete. Following the legend, he splits his opponents arrow and wins back the silver one.
8. How does Robin defeat Belleme in "Robin Hood and the Sorcerer"?

Answer: He stabs him with the silver arrow.

While pretending to be under Belleme's influence to kill Marion, he instead kills Belleme with the silver arrow. Belleme returns to life in "The Enchantment", but he is not killed and is not brought up in the series afterwards.
9. Which Saracen joins the group in "Robin Hood and the Sorcerer"?

Answer: Nasir

He's played by Mark Ryan, who was a stunt man at the time of filming. This series was the first Robin Hood story to include a Saracen character. Nasir was supposed to die at the end of the episode, but the producers liked Ryan so much that they wrote him in as a supporting character. As Ryan could not act, he got no lines until the last episode of series 1, "The King's Fool". In story terms, perhaps Nasir cannot speak English well or at all when he joins the group and speaks more as he learns it. In reality, Ryan got more lines as he took acting lessons.

The other three options are Saracen characters from other Robin Hood media: Djaq is from the 2006-2009 BBC series "Robin Hood", Azeem comes from 1991 movie "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves", and Kemal is found in the show "The New Adventures of Robin Hood" (1997-1999).
10. Robin and Marion marry at the end of "Robin Hood and the Sorcerer".

Answer: True

They simply walk up to Herne the Hunter, who raises his hands above his head towards them, they kiss, and they're married. A common pagan marriage ceremony was and is handfasting, in which a cord or ribbon is wrapped around the participants' wrists. This ritual gave origin to the phrase "tie the knot" as a euphemism for marriage.
