Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When we first see Robin Hood, he wants to steal the TARDIS. What does the Doctor put up against Robin Hood's sword?

Answer: A spoon

"I am the Doctor, and this is my spoon!" Yes, the Doctor manages to defeat Robin Hood in a sword fight using a spoon... and his wits. "It's my box!" declares the Doctor.
Tom Riley played Robin Hood. He has been acting since 2006, and is probably best known for the BBC medical drama "Monroe" and for playing Leonardo da Vinci in "Da Vinci's Demons," a Starz-television drama about the early life of the Italian artist.
2. What is the prize in the archery contest in "Robot of Sherwood"?

Answer: A golden arrow

A golden arrow, which proves quite critical to the plot at the end. Robin and Clara shoot the arrow at the alien spaceship, giving it enough power to leave the atmosphere and explode in space. Gold plays a big role in the episode - better not say more, as River Song says, spoilers!
3. What alias does Robin Hood use to compete in the archery tournament?

Answer: Tom the Tinker

The final round is between Robin and the Sheriff of Nottingham. Until the Doctor shows up and proceeds to beat both of them. Robin and the Doctor top each other until the Doctor gets bored and uses the sonic screwdriver to blow up the target.
Near the end, the Doctor confesses that he isn't quite the marksman he claimed; he was using an arrow with a high-tech homing beacon.
Tom Baker was the fourth actor to play the Doctor. Tom Riley is the actor who plays Robin Hood, and Ben Miller is the actor who played the Sheriff.
4. Who was selected as the "True Ringleader" in "Robot of Sherwood"?

Answer: Clara Oswald

The Doctor, Clara and Robin Hood are locked up in the dungeon where Clara is demanding that one of the "heroes" come up with a plan. Robin is "biding his time" while the Doctor lacks his sonic screwdriver, so they spend the time swapping insults.
When Clara declares "enough!" the assistant to the Sheriff comes in and declares that Clara is the ringleader. He takes her to speak with the Sheriff. This marks the second time in season eight when Clara has used her wits in a direct confrontation with the villain.
5. Why does the Sheriff of Nottingham need so much gold?

Answer: To repair the spaceship's engines

The spaceship crashed on Earth - this is the second crashed spaceship in season eight, and the second one trying to get to "The Promised Land." The robots need gold to build a matrix so they can repair their engines.
Gold, at least gold's reflective properties, turned out to be a major weakness for the robot army. The peasants used gold mirrors to reflect lasers back towards the robots and destroy them.
There are no Cybermen is "Robots of Sherwood". Gold was a weapon against Cybermen in the past; if it got into their breathing apparatus, they would suffocate.
6. How did the Sheriff of Nottingham die in "Robot of Sherwood"?

Answer: Fell into a vat of gold

Robin Hood and the Sheriff have a great swashbuckling fight and wind up in the rafters of the castle. Robin uses a trick he learned from the Doctor, and knocks the Sheriff off the beam. He falls into the vat of gold.
Bizarrely, originally the Sheriff was supposed to be beheaded by Robin in the fight, revealing that he was also a robot. The BBC reshot the scene after the Islamic State in the Levant released videos showing the decapitation of two journalists.
The robots did use laser beams to kill several victims. Nobody was killed by arrows, unless you indirectly count the robots on the spaceship.
Ben Miller played the Sheriff of Nottingham. He has been working in British film and television since 1991, and is probably best known for his comedy work with Alexander Armstrong on the BBC sketch comedy program "Armstrong and Miller". Science fiction fans might recognize him from the series "Primeval" (2007-2011).
7. The Doctor and Robin Hood get along famously for most of "Robot of Sherwood".

Answer: False

The Doctor and Robin argue throughout almost the entire episode. For most of the episode, the Doctor refuses to believe that Robin is even a real person, coming up with a variety of wild explanations about the archer and his Merry Men.
Robin Hood is quite contemptuous of the Doctor, and is constantly ridiculing the Doctor about his age. "Bony Rascal" and "Desiccated Man Crone" are two of my favorites. Robin also criticizes the Doctor about being pale due to being Scottish, and attributes it to his aversion to vegetables.
At the very end, Robin and the Doctor realize they are very similar and they part on friendly terms.
8. Clara's advice to Robin Hood at the end of "Robot of Sherwood" was "Always be _____________."

Answer: amazing

"Stay safe, and always be amazing."
Clara and Robin had a mutual attraction. He was a legendary hero that she had always wanted to meet, and Clara looked amazing herself in that red princess dress. Robin saved Clara as they were being attacked by the Sheriff's robots. At the end of the episode, he was teaching her archery.
9. At the end of "Robot of Sherwood" who showed up right after the TARDIS disappeared?

Answer: Maid Marian

Maid Marian is the romantic interest of Robin Hood. She dates back to May Day celebrations as early as the 15th century. At the very end of "Robot of Sherwood" the Doctor tells Clara he is giving Robin a gift -- right afterwards we said Marian appear.
Missy from the Netherworld does not make an appearance in "Robot of Sherwood" although there is a fleeting reference to "the Promised Land."
Richard the Lionhearted was king from 1189 to 1199. As the story notes, in 1190, he was fighting in the crusades. He was the son of Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitaine.
Sabrina Bartlett played the young servant girl for most of the episode, but appears as Marian at the very end.
10. Who wrote "Robot of Sherwood"?

Answer: Mark Gatiss

"Robot of Sherwood" is Mark Gatiss' seventh script for "Doctor Who". His first was "The Unquiet Dead" (2005). He has written about 1950s London ("The Idiot's Lantern"), World War II London ("Victory of the Daleks") and Victorian England ("The Crimson Horror') as well. Gatiss also acted as Gantok in "The Wedding of River Song".
Paul Murphy directed the episode. He began directing BBC dramas in 2003. Murphy has done quite a few episodes of "Casualty" the very long-running BBC hospital drama. "Robot of Sherwood" was Murphy's first "Doctor Who" as director.
Richard Elfyn was the voice of the robot.
Roger Ashton-Griffiths had the very short role of Master Quayle, the first victim of the evil Sheriff. Ashton-Griffiths began acting in 1982, and has appeared in many films since. Fans of "Game of Thrones" might recognize him as Mace Tyrell.
