Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the animated children's show "Fifi and the Flowertots", Stingo is a wasp, Fuzzbuzz (aka Bumble in the UK) is a bee, and Sluggsy is, well, a slug. Who or what is Diggly?

Answer: Worm

There is a spider in the show, but it is called Webby. Diggly is a worm, voiced by Marc Silk (rather aptly I thought :-D).
2. What was the occupation of the kids TV character named Grubb? (He always worked with his friends Pugh, Pugh, Barney McGrew, Cuthbert and Dibble)

Answer: Fireman

"Pugh, Pugh, Barney McGrew, Cuthbert, Dibble, Grub" was the roll call at the fire station in "Trumpton", and every episode ended with the Fire Brigade Band playing on the Bandstand to entertain the townsfolk.
The narrator was Brian Cant who appeared in numerous other kids TV shows in the UK in the 1960s and 70s.
"Trumpton" first aired in 1967, following "Camberwick Green" and being followed in turn by "Chigley".
And of course you know that a grub is the larval stage of certian species of beetle.
3. Can you remember the names of the two naughty slugs from "Gordon the Garden Gnome"?

Answer: Lez and Dez

"Gordon the Garden Gnome" was made by the BBC, and first shown in 2005. With Gordon voiced by Alan Titchmarsh, the show aimed to get children interested in gardening. Just in case you were wondering... Dez is the pink slug, and Lez is the purple one.
The little worm who lives in Gordon's hat is called Andrew.
4. Which children's 'invertebrate' television show, first aired in 1991, is voiced (or rather sung) by father and daughters Jeff, Casey, and Holly Stevenson?

Answer: Spider!

"Spider!", often called "Spider in the Bath" for the eponymous first of the thirteen original episodes, became a favourite with both children and parents when it was first shown on UK television in 1991.
The episodes are entirely sung rather than spoken, and even a total and utter petrified arachnophobe like me can enjoy them as the graphics make even *the spider* look cute :-D
All together now... "I tried to flush him down the drain but now he's climbing up the chain..."
5. Sponge Bob Squarepants is (rather obviously) a sponge, and therefore invertebrate. Do you remember his father's name?

Answer: Harold

Almost every character in "Sponge Bob Squarepants" is an invertebrate; Patrick the starfish, Gary the snail, Larry the lobster, Mr. Krabs is a crab, and so on.
The show first aired in 1999, and is shown on more networks than any other Nickleodeon show.
Spongebob's mother is referred to as both Margaret and Claire in different sources.
6. In 1981, "Willo the Wisp" was first broadcast on British television. Among several invertebrates in the cast was Arthur the caterpillar. How did he refer to the "tufty bit" on top of his head?

Answer: Me feathered appendage

All the characters in the 1981 series of "Willo the Wisp" were voiced by Kenneth Williams. As well as Arthur the Cockney caterpillar they included 'Mavis Cruet the fat fairy' and 'Evil Edna the Wicked Witch'.
7. Which animated character often swats Guido the spider with a rolled up newspaper?

Answer: Garfield

Garfield was first drawn by Jim Davis in 1978, and has gone on to be the most widely printed cartoon strip of all time. He has also starred in several television series, and at least five movies over the years.
Garfield and Guido have had a running battle over the years, with Garfield swatting Guido whenever he can. Sometimes Guido gets the better of Garfield though.
8. Which cartoon show, also a newspaper comic strip, featured the yearly phenomenon of the crabs and "The Eyeballs in the Sky"?

Answer: The Perishers

The original cartoon strip "The Perishers" began in the late 1950s, and continued until about a year after the death of creator Maurice Dodd (in 2005).
The animated series first aired in the 1970s, and Boot was voiced by actor Leonard Rossiter.
It was during the character's annual summer holiday trip to the seaside that Boot would peer into the rock pool world of the crabs and watch them, watching him, and 'worshipping' "The Eyeballs in the Sky".
Two other invertebrate characters in "The Perishers" were the caterpillar and the beetle.
9. Popular Australian TV show "The Wiggles" features an invertebrate called Henry. What species is Henry?

Answer: Octopus

Henry the Octopus is a regular character in "The Wiggles" TV and stage shows. The Wiggles have sold an astonishing number of DVDs and CDs around the world since they formed in 1991, and are the recipients of no less than ten "multi-platinum" discs for their sales.
10. Which cult classic kid's TV show featured a "tiny mollusc" called Brian?

Answer: The Magic Roundabout

Brian was the snail from "The Magic Roundabout", which first aired in the UK in 1965. Originally the show was French, then Eric Thompson (father of actress Emma Thompson) made the English version. The original series ran until the late 1970s, and some new episodes were made in the early 1990s.
Other much loved characters from the show include Ermintrude the cow, and Dougal the dog, and the phrase ""Time for bed" said Zebedee" has long since passed into the English vernacular. (Hands up if you said "Boinngggg!" when you read that...)
