Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Luis Tiant, the great Red Sox pitcher of the '70s, was Sam's partner in a TV commercial in episode 13 of season 1. In the commercial, Sam fulfilled the same role he had on the Red Sox. What was Sam's position in his playing days?

Answer: Relief pitcher

A commercial agent, played by veteran character actor Barbara Babcock, showed up at the bar one day and talked Sam into starring in a commercial. The commercial featured Luis Tiant as spokesman for Field's Beer but he had trouble pitching the product. Sam came in as the relief pitcher and saved the commercial, just like in his playing days. The commercial went so well that the agent planned to take Sam national but Sam had a problem with his working relationship with her, as she expected him to be at her beck and call. Sam turned down the offer because of the strings attached.

Luis Tiant was a Cuban born pitcher who played for the Red Sox from 1971-78 and was inducted into the Red Sox Hall of Fame.
2. In the First Season, then Speaker of the House Tip O'Neill ducked into the bar while trying to avoid Diane. Which beer-loving bar regular was tricked into badmouthing the Congress right in front of the Speaker by the other bar flies?

Answer: Norm

Tip O'Neill ducked into the bar and sat down to have a drink. He sat next to Norm's stool, while Norm happened to be in the bathroom. Carla recognized Tip and commented that he looks like Tip O'Neill. Sam then recognized that it was Tip. Tip explained he ducked into the bar to get away from a woman who was telling him her philosophy of life and of government. Diane walked in and turned out to be the woman Tip was trying to elude but Sam saved Tip from her. When Norm came back Cliff asked him what he was saying "about that do nothing Congress." Norm repeated his criticisms and then realized he was sitting next to the Speaker of the House.

Tip O'Neill served as a congressman from Massachusetts from 1963 through 1987 and was Speaker from 1977 through 1987.
3. Which senator, who would become a promising presidential candidate until he was caught on his aptly named yacht, Monkey Business, with a woman who was not his wife, was a Trivial Pursuit partner of Sam's in episode 25 of season 4?

Answer: Gary Hart

While dating Councilwoman Janet Eldridge, played by Kate Mulgrew, Sam ended up rubbing elbows with many rich and famous people. Diane thought he was name dropping all of the time and was sick of hearing about his star-struck adventures. While Diane was in the back room, Gary Hart walked in to return Sam's coat to him which he had left in the senator's car and mentioned they were Trivial Pursuit partners last night. The senator thanked Sam for help with the sports trivia and Sam thanked him for help with everything else. As Senator Hart was leaving, Diane came out and ran after him like a star-struck person herself. She then caught the irony of what she had just done and tried to play it off.

Gary Hart was a senator from Colorado from 1975-1987. At the time of his appearance on "Cheers", the scandal that ended his presidential bid was still a year away. Interestingly, the scandal catapulted Michael Dukakis of Massachusetts, another "Cheers" cameo participant, into the nomination.
4. In season 6, Gary of Gary's Olde Towne Tavern, sent Wade Boggs over to Cheers but the Cheers gang did not believe it was really Boggs. What did they do to Boggs because they believed he was a fake sent by Gary?

Answer: Chased him down the street and took his pants

After the bars went back and forth in a series of practical jokes, Gary sent the real Wade Boggs to Cheers. The gang did not believe it was him and when he tried to flee, they chased him down the street and took his pants. When they came back into the bar and went through his wallet, they saw that it was the real Wade Boggs. When Sam came back in from a night out with one of Gary's waitresses, the gang told him what happened. Frasier pointed out that Gary had pulled off the ultimate practical joke by having Cheers get themselves by not believing it was Boggs.

Wade Boggs was an all-star third baseman for the Boston Red Sox from 1982-1992.
5. In episode 17 of season 7, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral William J. Crowe, came back to the bar with Sam. Many of the regulars had interactions with him. Which of the following did NOT happen?

Answer: Carla slept with him and got pregnant yet again

Although Carla had many dalliances on the show, she did not sleep with the Chairman. When Adm. Crowe first showed up, Cliff introduced himself and then recited all the statistics about Crowe's military career and personal life. Crowe was impressed. Later on, Cliff showed the admiral plans for a submarine with wheels and asked where he should send them because the Pentagon kept losing his plans. The admiral said he should definitely send them there then. When Frasier saw the admiral in his uniform he assumed he was some crackpot dressed up like him and not the real Chairman. He gave the Chairman his card and the Chairman said he would keep it because there were men at the Pentagon who could use Frasier's services. Rebecca lost an earring and realized the Chairman was in her office alone. She wondered if he stole it. Later on, Sam found the earring in a tumbler.

Adm. Crowe served as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 1985-1989 under President Reagan.
6. During the 100th Anniversary celebration for Cheers in episode 6 of season 8, real-life Boston Mayor Raymond Flynn came to the bar to present a plaque in honor of the occasion. What happened to interrupt the presentation?

Answer: Lilith went into labor

Although the sign out front of the bar said Cheers was established in 1895, we learned in this episode it was actually established in 1889 but Sam had put 1895 because of Carla's superstitions about numbers. When the mayor showed up with a camera crew to present the plaque to Cheers, first an old man had a heart attack in the back room and then Lilith went into labor. Carla was not pregnant at this time. We soon learned the old man was faking but Lilith was not. In all of the commotion the mayor decided to leave and said he would come back in another hundred years when things calmed down.

Mayor Flynn was in office from 1984-1993.
7. Kevin McHale played for Cheers in a basketball game between Gary's Olde Towne Tavern and Cheers and hurt himself during the game. What was the outcome of the injury?

Answer: He iced his foot for 30 minutes and was fine

Gary of Gary's Olde Towne Tavern showed up at Cheers one day with two very tall men and said they were his new bartenders; clearly they were ringers for the upcoming basketball game. Sam knew Kevin McHale and called him to play for Cheers by telling him the proceeds were for charity. Kevin figured out Sam was scamming him but said he did know an orphanage and if Sam gave the winnings to the orphans he would play for them. Sam agreed and they beat Gary's team but McHale got hurt in the process. The next day a man showed up at Cheers claiming to be the Celtics team physician. He said Kevin broke his foot and was out for the season. Carla bought his silence with the money they won. A few minutes later Kevin showed up walking without any problem and said he just iced the foot and was fine. The gang realized Gary tricked them again. Gary then showed up and gave the money to the orphans and got credit instead of Cheers.

Kevin McHale played with the Boston Celtics from 1980-1994. He also appeared in episode 8 of season 10 along with his wife.
8. In season 9, Sam and Norm spotted Michael Dukakis outside of the bar one day. What was Dukakis doing?

Answer: Buying a newspaper

Sam and Norm were walking down the street when they spotted Dukakis buying a newspaper out of a vending machine. They discussed how they should approach the former governor and what they should call him. First they thought they should call him Michael, then Mike, then Duke. Before they get the nerve up to approach the governor, Dukakis turned and said hello to them before walking off. They then went through the list of what to call him again as they headed into the bar to tell the gang who they just saw.

Dukakis had just left office when the episode aired. He served as governor of Massachusetts for a total of 12 years (1975-1979, 1983-1991).
9. In episode 23 of season 10, Cliff and Norm spotted Senator John Kerry on the street outside the bar and asked for his autograph. Why did they want his autograph?

Answer: They thought he was a local TV anchor.

Cliff and Norm spotted Senator Kerry while walking to go into Cheers. Cliff thought he was a local TV film critic but Norm corrected him and said he was a local TV anchor. They asked Senator Kerry for his autograph and then Cliff commented on how he liked his coverage of a certain story. Kerry told them he was Senator Kerry not a TV anchor. Once they realized he was not who they thought he was, they apologized for bothering him and went into the bar without getting the autograph. While headed down the steps to Cheers, Cliff said to Norm maybe Kerry knew Senator Gopher from "The Love Boat", a reference to Fred Grandy who played Gopher on the show and was at the time a congressman from Iowa in real life.

Senator Kerry was at the time the junior senator from Massachusetts, having only been in office since 1985.
10. Mike Ditka was a presenter on a TV awards show the gang was watching with which 1980s supermodel best known for her "Sports Illustrated" swimsuit covers?

Answer: Kim Alexis

Mike Ditka and Kim Alexis were presenters on the cable ACE awards and presented an award to none other than Diane Chambers. Diane droned on and on upon accepting the award and finally had to be dragged from the stage. While the gang was watching the awards, Carla came in and they told her nothing was on TV because they were afraid of how she would react. She looked at the screen and thought she was having a delusional episode like a waking nightmare because she hated Diane so much. Both Frasier and Sam reacted coolly to Diane's appearance and her success.

Mike Ditka was a Hall of Fame player and coach from the NFL. Kim Alexis made a name for herself as one of the first supermodels, along with others such as Carol Alt, Christie Brinkley, Iman, and Paulina Porizkova. Her "Sports Illustrated" covers launched her into superstardom.
